Sir, I believe you had a 'waft' rather than a 'tootle...'

One must observe the correct nomenclature now that one owns a Jaguar... biggrin

My 3.2S was fine in snow, spent most of the time sliding softly sideways, but never failed to proceed or gave me time to worry. I miss my XJ40.
I like the fact you have 15mins to catch a slide, given the long wheelbasesmile

Although I reckon it'll struggle to get out the street, given her clio 172 did this morning.

All the cleaning seems to have taken it's toll on the battery!

Went to shuffle some cars about, and the bugger wouldn't start. Luckily the Germans came to the rescue..

So this has just thrown up a new fault.

It only starts in Neutral, and it makes a "GRRAunch" noise when you pass through Neutral on the way to either Drive or Reverse.

I'm starting to think it may be down to either a sticking solenoid on the starter, or some issue with the inhibitor switch- anyone any suggestions?

I've also included it in my March Fleet update

Does the box change smoothly and quietly through the gears in drive as it should?
yep, selects fine, kickdown works well- no untoward bangs or shunts

Doesn't sound like the box itself then, though I'm no mechanic. Have you tried Googling it?
Yeah- thats where the thought re the solenoid comes from.

apparently you can get it to tap back in to position- or shake the car to get it to return..

who knows?

Well the gearbox has stopped grinding in neutral, so i think the solenoid has sorted itself out.

Still only starts in neutral.

Anyways, its been pressed into Winter Beater dutiessmile

Prognosis seems to be that its the inhibitor switch at the end of the gear selection cable.

Looks like a wee look see and clean may be in order.

In other news-it is a most comfortable way to get to/from the stationsmile
