What a lovely thing. I'd happily have one of those. Is it rather a car-engine mismatch, with that "spank me harder" engine mated to a very wafty vehicle?

Lovely lovely old thing OP.

I had a 260e which did have an economy gauge, I never knew why laugh

Re the window switch, if you take it out you can unclip the slides & it all pops open. There is a ball bearing & tiny spring to catch, but if you do it 'upright' then nothing falls out. I had a dodgy switch in mine & all it needed was the brass contacts cleaning up inside.

Re: the window. Mine has developed the same fault. Thanks for the tip.
I've also read that the wiring loom to the door is poorly designed, and twists up over the years, eventually breaking or shorting.

Well I've had a few email's from Charles Ironside (extremely helpful and nice to deal with) and this Is his last email -

Hi Rob,

I sold the car last time in 2008 to a Mr P**** L** if that makes sense and this is what I did to the car :

paintwork £88
General repairs 3349

I hope this helps !

Thanks,

So although I've still not had chance to have a good look over the mechanical's myself thing's are looking promising. smile

Amazing love the leather.

What's the black thing at top of center counsel a aftermarket alarm ?

And what's the glass case I'm assuming aftermarket ?

Christ, you see these, especially the estate or coupe for me, and immediately go off scouring the classifieds. I have nowhere for an extra car, and yet I need a TE and that 320CE on ebay at the moment, and another 172/182 to replace my missing hot hatch, AND... back to that brown leather. Just perfect.

I love the effort and care going into looking after these old beasts. My Alpina requires similar, has the horsepower of a decent hatch these days, and for the upkeep money you could be in all sorts of nice cars, but there is a joy in keeping the older stuff healthy. Except when you are spending on replacement flywheels. No joy there...

Yes both aftermarket jobbies.

The alarm sensor look's very 90's and Isn't In keeping with rest of the car but I'm wary of removing It and leaving horrid looking hole's so I'll look behind that at some point to see If removal will leave hole's.

Here's the full option list Of the car that I've found.

To echo everybody else's sentiment - it's bloody lovely! Three decades later and these old Mercs are still in a league of their own. Love it. Super cool and super stylish as well, in my opinion.

Stunning.

In 2007 I bought a 420SEL in exactly (and I mean exactly) the same colours in and out.

I paid £422 for it unseen on ebay, used it as a daily for 3 months and sold it for £675 again on ebay without spending a penny on it.

I really, really should have kept that car.
