Well not too much progress at the moment however It's had a service which included the oil/air/fuel/gearbox filter's replacing and will have the steering rack filter/distributor cap + rotor arm/cabin filter next week.

The thing Is though I've just bought another Mercedes - A W211 320 cdi avantgarde In silver with contrasting black leather.

Ill see how It goes but I don't think I'll be keeping them both.

If you keep the 211 and get rid of the 300TE I think a Pistonheads Lynching may occur... angel

Well still no further on the with the car as I'm struggling to get the speedo fixed.

With It removed we saw the cable Isn't broken (which would be right as the odometer still work's) and tried returning the needle to It's normal position but the minute It's driven again the needle just goes straight past the end of the clock's.

Does anyone know of somebody that can repair these w124 speedo's?

I could just go on ebay and buy another but I'd rather keep It original If I can.

Also,

The W211 320cdi we have Is still a cracking car and will be having It's first service with us very soon though I'm going to go above a normal service with a gearbox/diff oil change along with the usual "B" schedule.

I love this, what a find.

My 1981 500 SEL has an economy gauge, laughable really :-)

Great looking car you found there! I've got a '91 300TE in the same colour, though with Cream MB-Tex inside. Not nearly as nice as that Brazil soft leather. Someone went to town when they ordered your car, the spec is pretty amazing and you've got some unusual stuff like the undershields (Bloody great lump of steel covering the sump), ortho seats, walnut wood and climate control.

Being an Aus spec car I missed out on a few goodies, no idea why they didn't make the cargo tie-down points standard, I have stuff flying around in the back all the time.

There's a few codes that could do with clearing up though:

341 ADDITIONAL LAMP - That's the side markers on the front wings
362 RHD vehicles as per EC regulations
367 REMOVAL COSTS FOR CODE 524 (paint coat preservation) AND 668 (packing for transport)
615 Lamp Unit, Assymetrical for LH Traffic and Front & Rear door courtesy lamps
722 BAGGAGE RACK, INTEGRATED - consisted of the rubber strips on the roof along with removeable cross bars, looks like they're long gone.

Sounds like a return spring of sorts has broken. Perhaps pick up a 2nd hand speedo and use the parts to repair yours, that way you keep it original. Otherwise any instrument repair place should be able to help you, they are a pretty standard mechanical unit inside.

There was a scary moment when I tried the electric sunroof for the first time as It stuck In the fully open position however after moving It about a bit seems to have cured It.
Get yourself some Lithium grease and apply it to the channels. Not the spray stuff, but the white paste. MB dealers sell it for a ridiculous sum of money, but there are alternatives.

The lifting arms have a reputation for breaking too, so keep it lube'd.

Not sure if you've got manuals handy, but this site is good for most body related bits. Is US specific, but most of the stuff is the same. Only covers the 12V engine though.

I've never seen a 24v with an economy gauge.
It was fitted up to 06/90 (end of the 1990 model year). See here.

That's a perfect spec car - why do I never get to see these cars when they go on sale! Champagne exterior and brown leather with orthopedic seats... Lovely!

Does the rear window make a noise when you press the button - I've done two window regulators on my w124, they are a known weak point.
Smoke Silver actually. Champagne is proper gold.
Also, OP said it worked from the switch in the console so I'd say it's the switch in the door at fault.

Well I guess It had to happen at some point but It still really P*ssed me off when I found It vandalised the other day.

Three similar looking dents on one of the front wing's, they've not broken the paintwork so maybe If taken off the wing can be repaired.

Also I've found out It's ran out of Mot since early sept which is just as well It's not been used for ages.

No picture's of the damage just yet as I'm disinterested with It at the moment and a recent new quote to Insure It has more than doubled In the last 12 month's which hasn't helped. frown

How infuriating to have it damaged. But keep the faith, it's a lovely-looking thing.

Completely agree. Would love a W124 wagon. The old man had a brilliant 300TE-24 in bornite over grey leather back in the early 90's. Was epic.

Another small job which I've now started was the driver's wing mirror didn't fit flush so with It removed I've found out why.

Two metal mount's have snapped Inside which would usually allow the mirror to move forward's/backward's after a small knock, because they have snapped the mirror will sit not right.

I've stripped the colour-coded outer cover from the frame but will have to search around for a heated mirror frame ,just In case they are different to normal ones.

However this might not be as difficult as I first thought as I've just won a job lot of w124/s124 part's on ebay!

I only bidded on It for the 16' wheel's which will fill my arches better while looking original mercedes.

This Is the Item number - 151860269664

So hopefully there's a few other bit's and bob's that will help with the car and If any other fellow W124/S124 owner's need anything drop me a pm

Bravo, Babby. Bravo clap

IIRC the 300-24 should have 16" 15-slot wheels as standard. They are a lower offset to accommodate bigger brakes, per the examples in the auction you won. They are ever so slightly more dished than the 15" fitted to the 12v 300E.

You did worry me for a minute about the size of the wheel's but I've checked the car just now and it's currently on 15's rather than 16's.

I've also seen a link on a w124 forum someone's posted to a eBay seller that's listed loads of brand new febi-bilstein parts dirt cheap so I've just bought two front wishbones, rear link arms ,complete front link set and balljoints.

I'll have a browse to see if there's anything else going cheap!

Interesting.

I wonder if the 16" was part of the Sportline package then? Strange, as my Father's old 300E-24 (saloon) worse 16s but no Sportline.

I always thought the 16s were part of the Sportline pack, as opposed to being engine dependent...but this is based upon the photo that accompanied Mel Nicholls' long-termer in Autocar when I was about 11 so some of the facts may have faded with time!

Look after one of these and it'll look after you, seems like you're going the right way about it.

I've just sold my S124 after 5 years of happy motoring. I had to put some money into it to refresh the suspension etc. but in the end I got nearly double the £2750 I paid for it back!

Awesome job-lot by the way!

The 16" alloys (which is 8" wide, 34mm offset) were fitted to R129s and the 190E 2.5-16 Evo 1. You'll probably find that they stick out of the guards a little on a standard W124.

For the record, the standard wheel was 15x6.5 ET49 and the Sportline wheel was 15x7 ET41. Both available in either 16-hole or 8-hole styles.

Well after a couple of very tiring trip's to collect the job lot I won everything's back at my unit and I can honestly say I've never seen a bigger collection of part's other than being at an actual car breaker's.

It took me three hour's to load the first trip Into my lwb sprinter van.

The part's that I think I'll need to fix the niggly little job's that needed doing are all here beside's a lot more.

Though one of the sportline 16' wheel's I fancied need's a refurb but I really can't complain for the money!

The front end and rear link rod's have arrived so just waiting for the front arm's to arrive.

I've been looking up prices for a complete front and rear sachs or bilstein suspension set along with spring's while I'm doing the rest of the suspension but can't seem to find any that's not really, really expensive (I'm talking nearly £800!), does anyone have any pointer's for any better priced set's anywhere?

I'm looking to get some new shocks for my w123 and these guys seem to have good prices (not ordered them yet so can't comment on service etc) http://www.spring-loaded.co.uk/products.php?cat=Bi...

They also have a link to the Bilstein site so you can look up the correct part number.
