Lovely car jimbo. Love that blue and great to see you doing so much work on it.

So, now you've got it tip top (like the previous dream looked), must be time to move it on, no? hehe

Sometimes an older M3 seems attainable, a good idea even. And then I see a thread like this and realise without "a particular set of skills" and some industry contacts, an affordable example is would be nothing short of ruinous. Fair play to you though, there is little as satisfying as working on your own p&j. I'm no fan of LSB, Silverstone Blue is my favourite but I've enjoyed reading about your various trials and tribulations. Fair play to your missus too as you seem to spend every family holiday period under the car! That's a keeper.
Lol thanks for the kind words, I think this thread may be a bit misleading in that respect as it details everything I've done, but not the times it's taken us without issue to LeMans and back or all the way to, around, and then back from the Nurburgring, all the time being fast, comfy and generally awesome. I still do 100 miles a week in it to and from work, and it's a very good car to live with (I inadvertantly lowered the back end with 10 bags of gravel from B&Q and apart from some numpty mounting the aftermarket power block for the amp too close to the boot floor resulting in a quiet drive home biglaugh) it really has been hard to fault. Sure the oil seals were leaking but I didn't really need to polybush the rear subframe, I've got a real bad case of upgrade-itis biggrin (Brakes being a fine example of this!)

Cheers everyone - Eltax I'm glad the Impreza looked good, I do miss it but it did need some work before I sold it, as with all my cars kind of wish I'd kept that. The BMW is a good, fast car but quite sensible. You could be a right hooligan in the RB5 hehe

One collective mega-update as I had to sort out the photobucket links on M3cutters, so thought I'd update this too. Please bear in mind this is going back to August last year!

Tart update time:

Fitted some new pedals as the old ones looked a little tatty: £16 from eBay and a bit of fettling with the throttle later:

Need little brackets making to hold the bottoms of the brake/clutch pedals but they're secure enough. Annoyingly the footrest was scuffed so trying to get another.

And even more annoyingly, got these fitted and then noticed a bit of a stain on the drive so I need to get it on a ramp and have a look - there's a slight PAS weep somewhere (I did change the pump before the Nurburgring so hoping just a union needs nipping up)

Still not got round to getting brakes fitted, mate with ramp required - so the PAS leak is a good starter for 10 biggrin

Seem to have cured the PAS weep just by disconnecting and cleaning everything, think it was a slightly loose jubilee clip on the supply line - pleased as I hate working on the power steering system frown

Now, a problem some of us blokes have, overuse of your knob, it gets all flakey and dried out and just doesn't look that nice anymore rolleyes

So, removed this:

545i short shifter as fitted some time ago...

And, armed with a sharp knife, some strong glue and some very steady hands, turned the standard F10 M5 knob and gaiter into this hybrid with my alcantara gaiter from Royal:

Hey presto, much nicer. My girlfriend arrived home whilst I was playing with it and was full of praise, having noticed last week just how grotty it had got. She even said she didn't want to touch it rolleyes.

Anyway back in serious land, tired of having a fairly useless centre console (just storage, but kind of the wrong shape for most things) and the standard one being scratched to buggery I've also got some cupholders and the coinpurse (biggrin) to fit. These will wait till new stereo time however, as the alpine has a remote fitted there at the moment.

Also got some new mirror glass from John to fit, excellent service, I paid yesterday and they (attemped) to deliver today, so got to nip down the post office tomorrow smile

THEN I can think about fitting the brakes and finally stop spending money on this ****ing car :roflmao: Apart from that new head unit I want...

Quick Pre-Christmas update, not that much has been going on with the car, just more effortless miles biggrin Upto 121k now, and still don't get tired of driving it to work every day. Been really busy with work so the car has been a bit neglected.

Fitted my brakes, and only wish I'd done them sooner. Had a right mare getting the old inner races off as we did the wheel bearings at the same time, but once they were off it all bolted together really well. The D2 kit has everything you need and just worked, no hassle. Just had to trim the brake shields slightly. Bled up surprisingly easily with new 5.1, just got to bleed the backs through to refresh the fluid when I get a minute.

Crap fitted pic:

Once bedded in they have really impressed me. The Bluestuff pads work just like OEM from cold, no long pedal or oh **** moments on cold braking, and no major noise either. It's when you heat them up a bit and they keep getting better and better that really inspires confidence, and I think will add a lot to the car, it feels like a much better balanced package now rather than before where it had the go, just not the stop! Haven't tested these out beyond a few favourite roads thus far, track will the the real test, but no massive track day plans (apart from the Nurburgring again next year) - Very pleased overall.

Black Friday brought a ridiculously cheap deal on Amazon for some Zenarc ultimate bulbs (£40 a pair rather than £250!) I had been after some for a while as I had different coloured headlights. Always thought the lights were a bit poor, no just crap bulbs! Really impressed with these, but I had also noticed that since going to the 'Ring in May, I hadn't actually changed the headlights back from Euro-spec (so no kick up to the left) - that helped!

So when I say neglected, I hadn't washed it in ages which meant it looked like this:

So with an afternoon set aside I (once again) had to give it a really careful wash, but very pleased with how it shines up, thanks to the AG HD Wax, still soldiering on! This was only a light jetwash, snowfoam, and 2 bucket wash so quite impressed really.

Took some extra time to clean the arch liners and give the engine bay a once over, and dress the tyres for a change. Went to the shops on Sat and stood back (this is after 100 miles or so!) and was really pleased, not bad for a 14 year old car eh? coolcool

So that's that. I need a new amp, as one of them died and I've cobbled one to power the speakers but not currently using the subs. Going for a 5 channel to simplify matters, as I CBA putting another two in. Will replace the subs and rear speakers as they're both OEM so should see some improvements there, and then decide what headunit (Android) to get. Been waiting on the Octa-core Ownice model but may settle for a quad core 6.0.

I still have a nagging doubt about the VANOS so I want that doing, it's due an insp 2 in 7000 miles and I've been thinking about replacing the shocks and mounts, but honestly, creaks and rattles aside it's still fast, comfortable and entertaining enough that I don't really need to do anything with it, just awesome. Thanks for reading

I haven't been on here in ages as I said, I've moved to Bavaria, Southern Germany (Home of my BMW!) for work and so the M3 has been safely tucked away at Mum & Dads in Lincolnshire. I'd been umming and ahhing about bringing the car over, but struggled to get insurance, being out of the country more than not. A lot of places will only give you a 60 day green card, some do 6 months but you have to be resident for the rest of the year in the UK. So the answer in the end, after lots of searching, is to get European insurance through a UK broker (HIC) with a green card to let you drive it for 60 days in the UK biggrin Bit backwards but hey, it worked. Bit pricier but nice to have the M3 as a weekend toy rather than commuting like I was in the UK (You'll appreciate this means my €60k supercharged Jaguar is now my runabout cool)

So, armed with a typical Bavarian Tuesday Bank-holiday (so you take the Monday as well) and a family event back in the UK I flew back to the UK on the Friday, spent time with Family until Sunday and 6.30AM Monday morning set off to drive to Munich. This was by FAR and away the longest trip I've ever done, and part of me wanted to know if you could do it in one day. 5 countries, one train, two tanks of super unleaded, 18 hours and just shy of 800 miles later I can say, yes. Yes you can. Should you? Probably not rolleyes

12PM the same day (just) - Car is mega, was comfortable, quick, got out feeling relatively fresh.

So I've been doing some jobs I've been meaning to do for ages seeing as how I have the time to work on it now without needing it back together to get me to work.

Finally ordered my new amp - an Alpine MRV-V500 which will do Front, Rear and Sub all in one package, since my PLS amp died. I also upgraded the rear speakers because why not. The impedance of the HK subs is right for the amp, so have left them as is for now, will see about upgrading them later. I took the chance to take the parcel shelf out and spray it as it was faded to blue, and put fuzzy velcro tape on any exposed edges or rattle points per Dali's excellent write up. I treated all the plastic along the way and it looks much better now. Wired in the new speakers (coaxial 6.5" JBLs modded slightly to fit the standard speaker baskets) and they hide away under the HK grills perfectly, you'd never know they were different. I like JBLs because they're owned by Harman so now the HK grills are still covering Harman speakers, which I have to admit is very OCD. (I upgraded the fronts a while back with components)

Parcel Shelf before - hasn't come out very clear but was navy in the middle:

And After:

Tough decision, which one to take!

The speakers are a great fit, and only needed a tiny bit of modification, would definitely recommend them. https://www.jbl.com/car-speakers/CLUB6520_.html?dw...

So when I get the new amp installed I want to junk all the Alpine units in the boot and the outdated screen up front and go for an Octacore Android headunit, like the Xtrons http://xtrons.com/pb7646bap-7-hd-digital-octa-core-64bit-32gb-2g-ram-android-6-multi-touch-screen-car-dvd-player-custom-fit-for-bmw-e46-rover-75-mg-zt.html

And now I've found I've got a cracked rear Eibach, I'm leaning (no pun intended) towards a B12 Pro kit, to refresh the dampers too. Happy with the ride on the Eibachs but think new dampers will make it much better, and wouldn't mind a touch higher either to be honest.

You get a few funny looks driving a RHD English car this far south, but everyone loves it. Whilst working on it the other night, in the space of ten minutes two different people stopped whilst driving past and asked to buy it cool No chance

So I pulled the plug - ordered an Erisin 6046b tonight with the OEM esque buttons and Octa core, 2gb and Android 6 - should be an improvement on the 2003 Alpine system.

I spent tonight starting to tackle the wiring in the boot, so the Alpine had 3 units and it had been wired in professionally I think, but with an entire ****-ton of insulation tape. Luckily they'd spliced into the BMW loom in about 4 places with chop blocks so it's back to just about normal. so I started with this (it was a little more organised tbh)

To this:

Ignore the speaker wires at the front, they'll be going to the Amp. I put the brackets back in to see if I could hang the Amp off it, it's a shame it's just too big to fit into the space taken by the brackets on the floor.

Speaking of which the Amp is brilliant - I made sure to install them one by one so I wasn't figuring out all the systems together. Running components up front, co-axials in the parcel shelf and the shelf subwoofers without breaking a sweat. Looking forward to having the amp out of the way of the recovery kit area which gets bloody hot on a long cruise.

Tomorrow's job is to take the screen out up front and do some wiring checks but think we're almost good to go smile

Also managed to fit my cupholder centre console which is a lot neater than the old storage cubby which had holes in from the Alpine remote. The coin holder even fits Euros which is neat biggrin

Thankfully the wiring from the Alpine unit hadn't severed anything vital (actually was installed quite well, just belied by the sheer volume of insulation tape) so only ended up with some tape over scotch-lock connections and only 4 wires which were actually broken (only OEM speaker wire so no need to repair now)

So the Android unit turned up very quickly, and thankfully works just fine from the limited wiring I have left - no BM54 or HK amp in the boot but works fine and outputs over the RCAs and amp wire fine. Some Amplifier tuning was required but quite pleased with the sound now.

So I celebrated by watching a "how it's made" on the S54 engine, from inside my S54 engine'd M3 biggrin

One nice aspect is the version of Torque on the headunit actually communicates with the OBD, my phone version of torque never worked, despite working on friends cars. Overall I'm very happy with it, looking forward to tweaking it and seeing what it will do - I'd definitely recommend it, even completely stock.

Next job is to tidy up the boot area, hide the amp on the left hand side (which I've already run power and ground to) and get the boot back together. The RCAs were run down the left hand side of the interior and I ran a USB C from the head unit to the centre console for phone charging.

Few (crap) pics of the amp on the bracket I had to make from some ply, spent some time tidying the speaker & power wires and now the boot carpet is back in you can't see any of it! rolleyes I like knowing its done right anyway biggrin My OCD is really not good with it being upside down but for tuning and wiring, this was the neatest way.

I've also wired in a reversing camera which is a neat little touch on the head unit - had got quite used to this in my company car so it's nice to have. Was quite simple really, hardest part was fishing the wiring through the bootlid grommet into the boot itself, manned up in the end and (carefully) used a metal fishwire to pull it through, having tried for ages with wire and tubes.

So I've managed to get the photobucket links working again which is neat, no idea how long for.

Spent a lot of time faffing with the head unit wiring, amplifier mounting etc and tidying the wiring in the boot, pleased now that all of the wires are hidden, and amp hidden away and the sound is just excellent now.

Got in it to go to work one morning, and the window fell into the door with a horrible noise, the mech had been noisy for some time but seemed like it had finally failed. I got a Valeo mech from a local parts place and took the afternoon off to fit. It's interesting as the fitting mechanism is different and looks like it needs some adjustment as it's too high on the leading edge, so some fettling required.

Anyway, took a drive out to Austria the other weekend, 200 miles or so of mountains, lakes and nice quiet, awesome driving roads. Have done this trip in the Jag and the M3 feels a lot smaller, lot more nimble.

And luckily, seeing as how the whole of Germany uses Automatic car-washes (Der Waschstrasse) because they're super paranoid about chemicals draining into the ground, so it's pretty much illegal to wash your car at home - I've found a really good handwash place nearby, so can clean it properly - happy again.

Still want to fit Bilstein's B12 kit and refresh all the top mounts etc, and replace the engine & gearbox mounts. Need to bring it back to Blighty in November for it's MOT and I'll leave it in England over the winter before coming back out in Spring

Cheers Nick, a lot of people tell me that, which helps me from focussing on the niggly little bits that annoy me and enjoy it for a time (before the niggles come back!)

Oh another important part of living in Germany is I discovered yesterday that it doesn't have it's 155mph limiter anymore. Still pulling at 165mph on the dash, 155 on the GPS biggrin

I think it's going to be a LSB E46 when the time comes to sell my E30. This is such a nice example.

Good car. Good colour. I'm sure I'll see it about as often at and around Gaydon.

Are you thinking about doing your rod bearings? I'd highly recommend it as I spun a rod through 3 sides of my S54 and have seen a lot of people do the same.

Been thinking about it - definitely want to sort the VANOS, and might do the headgasket whilst I'm there. Trouble is my garage in Germany isn't massive, probably big enough if I cleared the crap out of it, so I'd want to do it at my parents really, and it's finding the time at the moment. For piece of mind though you're absolutely right, would like to do VANOS and timing chain tensioners, HG and big ends (probably mains whilst I'm in there too).

I used to be based at Whitley but I'm on assignment for 3 years out here so doubt you'll see very much of me or the car!

Cheers Mark biggrin I do miss my E30.

I've gone through and edited all the links so the photobucket pictures work again now.

Love the colour of these, took some photos of a friends one while he was in London.

Although his doesn't go on track ha.
