A building project has got in the way of much other than some polishing and use of the 300CE-24. I'm building up a list of little niggles to be fixed, but generally the car is better than I could possibly have hoped for. Jonathan is locked in combat with the Mercedes Customer Care people who are denying, in the face of all evidence, including blown up photographs. that the hyphen in the 300CE-24 badge is asymmetrical. Updates to follow, but in the meantime here is the old girl captured during "the golden hour" up at the beach the other day.

Nice photo. Interesting thread. The rightness of the shape leaps out in the bare bodyshop photos.

Beautiful car. Was briefly tempted to buy one of these from MTSV, but the complexity and potential fuel consumption scared me off.

For me, the 24V engine was possible the best part of the car.

Cracking thread for a stunning car.

I recently took a similar plunge on a Signal Red 300CE-24 Sportline

Not as well optioned. Barely optioned at all to be honest!

But very much cherished with the last owner having it 14 years of garaged pampering.

Having bought a slightly duff E320 Coupe a few months back, I could sense a quick £5k being sunk in it, so moved on to this and have no regrets.

The old 300-24 lump is a rev seeking peach of a unit and the car feels as tight as a drum

Looking for a Hyphen now!

No air con to go wrong at least

The Hyphen is still available from MB - I bought this last year for about £4.00.

As you can see, it’s a W201 part as it was probably used first on the 190 Cosworth - apologies for not having the full part number!

I’ve owned my 300SL-24 for 10 years now, and agree that it’s a terrific engine.

Indeed.

I rang Mercedes at Harrogate, who ordered it from one of the South of England dealerships who had it in stock.

Immensely pleasing.

What way up does it go? Ask Mercedes...

Full part no is A 201 817 11 15.

Thank you J.

It isn’t symmetrical- these things matter when you’re sweating away at the concours competition.

Truth be told, I can’t remember without going and having a look.

I see it is back on the market. It fetched £8,950 last time. It will be interesting to see whether it makes even more this time. https://www.carandclassic.co.uk/auctions/mercedes-...

Lovely car / perfect spec and nice history…
Did the 300 engine have the same wiring loom issues as other engines of the time?
