Great thread.
At your age I had an MG Midget as my daily driver (still own it), so I very much understand the tales of unreliability and things mysteriously fixing themselves.
Looking forward to seeing how you tackle the bodywork.
Bodywork has been treated in shot. Will be prepped and sprayed. The hole will be filled then as above. At your age I had an MG Midget as my daily driver (still own it), so I very much understand the tales of unreliability and things mysteriously fixing themselves.

Not my daily thankfully so can have it off the road. It is tasked with getting me to Light water Valley soon (second week in April), so want it all done by then preferably.
Wipers didn't fix themselves, but easily enough fixed. Passenger quarterlight did fix itself though...
hello from a Singaporean '56 2 door owner.
My car also struggles at idle at the traffic lights, i notice that if as i brake I also put my clutch in, and hold the clutch in, it idles better. I had the gearbox cover off recently and noticed that there is alot of play in the brake/clutch movement....
any wisdom greatly appreciaed!

Idle speed issues at the lights can be cured by adjusting the idle screw on the carbureto (diagrams online are available). Run the engine to operating temperature and make sure the choke is fully in. Then adjust the screw until it is idling OK, not struggling. Then adjust it back until it struggles again. Then slowly adjust the screw until idling is just fine and go for a drive. After this, any fine adjustments can be made based on if you find it too slow/fast idle in certain conditions.
Note I'm not an expert, but this is how I'd do it.

I've yet to have a play under the gearbox cover. My only advice is to check everything is tightened and if this doesn't work, check if the part is worn enough to cause play.
My only other advice is wait for another smarter person than me to comment, look in the Manual and post on the MMOC forums.

There's a couple of easy things you can do to help it idle smoothly.
Top up the dash pot on the carb regularly. And, often overlooked, replace the carb piston spring. Yo'll need to make sure you've the right one.
Not the only possible causes, obviously, but 5 minute jobs so worth doing.

How did you get on with the master cylinder? I did mine a few weeks ago, not a pleasant job but I was lucky in that it went ok!
A couple of things went in my favour, first a good friend (ie very mechanically competent) was available to help, plus it turned out it wasnt the first time the master cylinder had been taken out, so the whole job including rebleeding only took about four hours.I went for the longest drive i have taken Kevin for since we came to Singapore to celebrate!
I didnt realise that there were so many morris owning pistonheads, is it time we got on our own subforum??

Thats pretty good going! I think I spent about that just throwing brake fluid around, horrid stuff that just seems to get everywhere!Had my Minor out yesterday for the first time this year , ran like a champ. Great fun!
Usually when finding holes where there should be metal, or banging your head on the edge of the bonnet
Speaking of which, have you chaps seen the extending bonnet prop? It allows the bonnet to lock open in a much higher position. Wish I'd got one 10 years ago, makes things so much easier (and less painful).

No modification to the car at all. Old prop comes off by removing two split pins, new one goes on in the same way. Works in the same fashion as the original but has an extra piece to allow an the fully open position. I got it from one of the members of the MMOC forum, I'll dig his details out if you're interested.
