Huw was thrashed to and from Driffield Steam Rally today. Smelt of burning oil on the way and needs tuning as it drinks at around 20-25 mpg rather than 35 mpg but nothing fell off or exploded so a sucessful shakedown run in my eyes. Ill post a pic tomorrow....

The engine is slowly freeing up after it's 10 year slumber, but as found by the recent runs to Driffield and Sewerby it's a tad worn consuming about 1/4 of it's oil after each long thrash up and down the motorway.....however the 25MPG problem I am having is just due to a lack of fine tuning so it should raise back to 35 after a fiddle.

Why thank you, don't look too hard though tongue out The second pic in the last post is the best I've ever got, hides many problems smile

I'd also wager the Volvo has a tad more than 48 bhp, although a 35MPG drinking habit is something my pocket/Yorkshireman side of me looks upon with a wish tongue out

Huw turned 50 today! Went out for a birthday drive or 2 to find a slightly squeally clutch and the oil pressure light came on, lovely! tongue out

Well......ARSE

Took the troubled Huw to a mechanic for a second look and diagnosed head gasket failure due to a water pump failure which helped explain the squeals whilst driving and massive oil consumption. Still a right royal pain, so decided to have full flush, tune up, new boot hinges and lock/handle and locking fuel filler cap installed whilst having all parts to do with HG and some hoses replaced.....

There is a blanking bolt that you can take out to insert a temperature sender. I had a row of extra gauges just below the dash which included a temp gauge. (after the horse has bolted I know biggrin)
My clue was after 2 minutes the heater was warm XD Lovely if it was chilly though XD

After some poking, the head is buggered in cylinder 2 with nothing seating and the bottom end is knackered. Currently have a second engine (a goldseal unit) being tested to see if it is any good, and if so lobbed in. Just annoyed as Monty (pictured) hadn't moved for a month or two and fired pretty quickly and pulled perfectly, little bugger tongue out

I reckon if I owned one now I would upgrade the drum brakes to discs if possible... as that was probably the worst feature of the car ! Otherwise they are amazing !

Double declutching is on my learning list, easiest way now is drive it as a 3 speed most of the time and 1st when at a standstill as it doesn't crunch then.

Brakes I can live with, even if they aren't working to their 100% capacity at the moment (!)

Regarding ownership, we currently have 6 Moggies, and for now 1 roadworthy until mine returns to the road tongue out

The goldseal unit was no good, cracked block. Dug our spare engine out today, and it is off tomorrow to go and be checked over if it is any good. Will it be 3rd time lucky? I hope so, open heart surgery takes too long :/

Lovely old cars, saw a 1963 Riley today, looking good. At least you can get to the engine on the Morris, can't even see the spark plugs on my Volvo.

Your car is same year as my BSA 650 cc Clubman's Lightning, now worth about 15k, sadly I sold it in 71 for £120, sob sob sob.

I know what you mean, had my dads car pulled up near Monty the other day and the difference was something to behold with both having bonnets up at the time. The moggy is miles easier to do nearly anything on compared to the Punto...

I think most the bolts on moggys are the same size? its a-few years since I worked on one, was fascinated by how simple yet durable they are not a lot of cars last 50years even with maintenance, there like a time-capsule in motoring, and everyone knew someone with a moggy
I have a bag of Whitworth, metric and imperial. Any can be anywhere at any time hehe After 50 years of bodging by many owners it can be a guessing game.

You are correct though, they are pretty damn tough. It was happy being thrashed up and down motorways with head gasket failure and no working water pump. The only help it had was the heater vent open all the time.

Apparently engine the third is being a pain, I hope it can be fixed or engine IV will have to be found...Bugger.

1st Engine: Bottom end and head failure
Engine Number 2: Cracked block
Engine The Third: Being a pain
Engine IV: Hopefully not needed, if so it needs sourcing from elsewhere.

Remind me why I have a classic again hehe

Third is the word, not third is a turd as engine the third is fitted and working. Commuting tomorrow became a lot better...

Car got me to work today, required some faff but the choke is miles out as half out is full and fully out is too much. Brakes are miles better though as they actually stop the car with confidence as opposed to before. All in all, working engine and brakes gets a thumbs up from me

Out to Crich today, pleasantly surprised by the extra grunt 4 co-ordinated cylinders make compared to when they don't co-operate.

However, that choke is a faff isn't it? Good luck with yours!
I basically just have to be very sparing on choke. Gave me a fright at Crich when it wouldn't start to move it on to the street, need some as the fuel had vaporised. Also got more fun on wet roundabouts and finding out how much welly you can give before it will start misbehaving tongue out

Went on a solo run out today to find some photo spots....

Food stop in Bakewell also occurred (failed to dump it outside the town hall BV72)

Came back to the garage and attempted to reverse in for the first time. It happened, but I accrued scratches along the way
