PS3 isn't an option in 225/55 16, so Primacy 3 it probably is then. I guess with 95 load rating being good for 690 kg a corner I'm going to be OK there, even with two tons of laden SL.

95 is the factory spec, at least on my 1999 car. But I don't suppose there is any discernible difference between 95 and 99.

I really recommend www.tyreleader.co.uk. I have not found anywhere cheaper and they deliver pretty quickly.

Ah well, that's worth knowing. I haven't got the book for my '93 with me but from memory it doesn't mention load rating, presumably because it hadn't bee invented back then (as hadn't W and Y speed ratings)

Load rating must have been around then, since the load rating is specified by Jaguar in the handbook for my car 1992 Sovereign - 225/65 ZR 15 with a load rating of 99.

Dunlop Sport Blue Response seems to have been liked on Jaguar forums from what I can see, at least on old Jaguars. It could be they suit the Jag's suspension setup more than they do Mercedes, or be preferred since they were an original supplier, much like Continental supplied Mercedes.

I am interested to see the rise in load rating doesn't affect comfort. It is reassuring, since I am thinking of buying tyres soon, and my likely size is mostly available as 102XL with a 'W' speed rating.

It doesn't look too bad for it:

It looks fabulous for low mileage, let alone a quarter of a million!

The colour and wheels really suit it. Everything is 'just so'.

I'm sure the 12.9 on the tripometer isn't a coincidence ...

Thanks chaps. It was meant to be 129.0 but there was a spousal omission. The Archers must have been on the wireless or something. Or maybe she had something better to think about.

An old money Merc makes most houses look a little classier!

That is looking ridiculously good, for a car with that many miles, that is how to maintain a car. I notice yours has an oil temp gauge, while my '97 has an oil pressure gauge. The oil temp gauge is probably more useful.

Congratulations Jonathan on reaching the quarter of a million mark in your beautiful SL. I rarely post on here but over the last year I have read all of your posts regarding the R129 as I finally bought one last year and your wealth of information from both here and the Mercedes-Benz club forum (yes it is a scandal if they delete the old site in a years time) was invaluable.
You are the epitome of "If a job is worth doing, it's worth doing properly."

Thanks all. It's a wonderful car. I ran it down to Grimsby and back yesterday for lunch. A roundtrip of 360-odd miles (we came back over the Humber Bridge just for fun). Approximately two and a half hours each way, maybe slightly less. Anyway, despite starting with about ¾ of a tank and despite consistently running between 90 and 110mph with the odd foray up to more sensible speeds, it gave me 435miles on the tank and 28.2mpg. And more to the point was blissfully easy to use.

That really shows the benefit of the fifth gear. Mine would do 24 on that run.

Damned air conditioning doesn't work: absolutely no gas. Could be a pipe was disturbed during the recent works but it seems to me infinitely more likely that something is broken, like the condensor. It hasn't had one for 8 years and 125k miles, and that is about how long the original lasted.

Anyway, a picture illegally parked out front of the sunglasses shop I just visited, the local HQ of my nemesis in the background:
