It's a car I've always wanted. I got as close as a base spec white 106, and a Saxo VTS. It's even crossing my mind to chop my lovely R26 in for one...
And here is the car you can swap your R26 for.http://www.carandclassic.co.uk/car/C632958
It's been owned by a small collector and has 75K.
I massively miss my Rallye. Bought mine from BCA auction in Newport a few years back, one owner from new and had only covered 37k (paid a massive £650 plus indemnities).
If that 75k car is worth £6250 what would mine of been worth ?!
Anyway , it all ended pretty badly. Was driving to the bodyshop I had booked her in for a full engine out , interior out respray. Hit a patch of oil giving it a bit too much around a country bend and did this ...

Thanks All,
Glad to see there is a bit of appreciation for these brilliant little cars!
I've now got a quote from a local bodywork specialist to make the car immaculate; It's actually a bit more than I was hoping, so I may need to shop around.
Meanwhile, the car has delivered a couple of sterotypical French surprises since my last update:
1. Showing off the Rallye to a few friends on Thursday, I managed to snap the bonnet release handle. It's any easy fix, but sourcing a part is challenging these days! I haven't been able to find one just yet, but understand the lever from an early VTR is the same.
2. The clutch cable managed to detach itself from the pedal; I think it's normal for these to stretch a bit when they are new, so was probably inevitable. In any case, now resolved.
I did think about cleaning the car and taking some photos on Sunday but taking it for a blast got in the way! I do still owe the thread some better photos, but I'll probably wait until the bodywork is mint and the new decals are fitted now.

Where did you get the air filter from? can't seem to find one for mine.
Which spark plugs?
I believe the spark plugs are NGK ones. The majority of the items were sourced by the garage, but I provided the clutch, clutch cable and the radiator (couldn't get an original, so went for the uprated Nissens one). Which spark plugs?
The biggest challenge parts wise was the sump. In the end, we had to use a standard Peugeot 106 sump - with a hole drilled for the oil temperature sensor.
There are still plenty of places to buy filters from online if you are willing to trust evil bay etc:

I had to go back and check on the reg on my old one! That was 88k miles too, or possibly slightly less. Here it is in correct mud-adorned state:
Always wanted one, and the opportunity came up last year. It lived up to expectations Ran a Saxo VTR (VTS powered) alongside it so was quite interesting to draw comparisons. Saxo would murder it in a straight line, 106 wouldn't see which way it went. Saxo was softer, more comfy, quieter, easier to drive and faster point to point. At the time I would argue the 106 Rallye was more fun, but looking back I'm not so sure. The Saxo is so much gruntier and not much less agile around the bends, I think it probably overrides the fun factor of the Rallye. The Rallye was infinitely cooler though! The Saxo's completely uncool, whereas the Rallye turned heads. Didn't bother me much, I don't like to stand out!
Awesome cars though, and I'm confident a future classic. I'd love to have restored mine, but what I really wanted was:
I managed to pick up AX GT no.5 a month or two ago, and it's the one I'm going to restore

I am quite interested in detailing cars and have already given it a wash, clay and polish. The paint has actually come up quite nicely with the dual action polisher, but there are/were a few minor bodywork issues to be addressed and I sent it off to a pantless dent remove specialist for a general tidy.
Oh my.Nice to see one of these on here.
I got an S2 Rallye at the start of the year as I had wanted one for a while so jumped at the chance of a clean one.
Was 100% standard but I have changed the brakes, steering wheel and lowered it 35mm.
Would love one of the satchshift kits but not keen on slicing the base of the dash.

It's been around ten years since I owned a 106 GTI, so difficult to make a comparison after all this time. The performance probably does make up for the lack of rawness and perhaps that's why the 16V engine swap has been so popular.KitchskMi said:

I am looking forward to the restoration thread. The AX GT is a cracking car!Gassing Station | Readers' Cars | Top of Page | What's New | My Stuff
