Volvo V60 D5 Premium Manual
Discussion
After keeping his horrible insignia cdti for a while and much delegation/veering around his phobia of German cars, my dad has finally decided on new a car for his retirement, a 2012 Volvo v60 D5 se lux premium with a manual box.
We first looked at stuff like the skoda octavia vrs and seat leon fr as he wanted a bit of poke for fun and to tow with but he found them too sporty looking and not comfy enough. But this came a long at a franchise dealer in Milton Keynes, loaded with kit, decent mileage and just been reduced so he snapped it up.
So the car; its got the lovely 5 pot 2.4 diesel fitted with 212hp and 310ib/ft of torque mated to a 6 speed manual gearbox. On the test drive I expected it to be quicker than it was but its quite a heavy lump the v60 and its such a smooth engine that i'll let it off. Rated at 57.5mpg and 129g/km co2 with the manual box which is pretty impressive.
Features: Its the top spec model so comes with lots of standard kit such as leather, bluetooth etc. But the first owner has thrown over £10k worth of options at its very well spec'd indeed, over £42k new (dad paid well under half that).
Options include:
Sat Nav
Four C-Chassis (comfort, sport and advanced modes)
Sunroof
Xenons
Driver pack (pedestrian avoidance, rear camera, lane departure, adaptive cruise control, sensors)
Winter pack (heated, electric seats etc)
Family pack (rear booster seats and blinds)
Exterior sports pack
Keyless drive
Premium sound system
BLIS (blind spot checker)
Detachable tow bar
and a few more bits i cant remember.
Stuff I dont like; Dash a bit bland, but its nicely laid out and very swedish so its not too bad. Lack of spare wheel!!! The keyless entry seems very confusing and it's got the dreaded electronic handbrake!!
On the road it seemed very composed, very grippy and so so comfortable as a passenger. Although a bit fidgety in sport mode. We're picking it up on saturday so will update when we've had it for a while and seen what it's really like.

First owner was Volvo UK and they tend to spec their demo fleet very high so that people can see all of the features and mod cons available and hopefully order them themselves when they make a purchase. That's a really nice spec, especially with the 'big' diesel and a manual box.
Looking good. I'm really enjoying my v60 in the rather nice rebel blue. Supremely comfortable and good level of kit although in 1.6 late diesel guise, it's far from a performance car. I'm sold on the estate car now so the next logical return to sports car territory witll be the Golf R estate in a couple of years.

Or the V60 Polestar if you like the V60Mini update: I've been really busy ever since the car arrived on saturday but dad says its awesome so far. He drove down into north London the other day and said the adaptive cruise control is amazing. Works really well when coming up behind slower cars and has 5 different setting for how close you want to get to the car in front. When they move out of your way, off it goes up to your original speed.
The engine is a peach apparently, mid range punch and top end pull is miles better than the old 160hp insignia and it sounds lovely in comparison. Sat nav works very also, different to volvos of old, and its ridiculously comfy.

Hi, Quick update for those interested drove it down to the south coast last weekend and was very impressed. For starters the active cruise is amazing!! So good on the motorways and dual carriageways but it can get confused when coming up behind someone to over take. Will not speed back up until fully into the outside lane, which can be annoying, especially to people coming up behind!.
It's very comfy although the leather gets very hot in the sun with the sunroof open!
I was wrong about the power, it's got a lot more poke than I thought it had! Very quick in the mid range. Fuel economy on the return 110 mile trip was 48mpg, not too shabby with a full boot and 3 people.
