smile.

The cars are very Jekyll and Hyde, cruising at 90 one minute and blasting to 1xx the next (autobahn officer!).

Has it had the cps's done at all in its life? Do you have any long term plans for it?

Thanks Felix, most kind of you. They really are very special, yet usable cars.

Thanks Birdster. The Titan Silver has a lovely sparkle to it which changes in different lighting conditions. I know I am going to regret this moment, but due to a new house build project (starting next Monday) I have decided to let the car go to free up some much needed funds.

I have placed an advert in the PH classifieds.

Heres a quick picture taken outside its spiritual home, the supplying BMW dealer. (nb bored Fiancée in passenger seat!)

That really looks stunning Tom. I still remember the Autocar cover from when the E39 M5 was launched - 400bhp was unthinkable in such a normal looking car back then. As the last manual M5 it gets extra kudos from me.
Thanks Oa,
It's a great feeling to have excessive power, I end up driving it very sedately most of the time as you have nothing to prove and so much power in reserve. They are such useable and competent cruisers with a proper sports car vibe. The manual six speed gearbox has a lovely weighty action to it. I think a grown man might actually cry once it's sold!

You will miss it, I miss my much less pristine example a lot these days. I think I'm going to get rid of my B5 RS4 and buy another. Like you, I drive my cars quite sedately much of the time, mostly because I'm usually lugging the family around. The sound of the S62 really adds to the occasion, even when just trundling to the shops.

Beautiful motor but what are the two holes in the front splitter that look like a second pair of fog lights? Front indicators look a bit odd too!

Cold air intakes would be my guess.

Got it in one Dragon heart. They are a popular upgrade on US spec cars and vent cold air direct to the front brakes.

That's a very sharp looking M5 you have there Tom, shame you're having to sell up so soon. Have been looking at E39 M5's myself recently, pondering one as an all rounder - just a shame there wasn't an official Touring model.

Interesting you mention the RS4 - as above, I have been pondering over maybe looking for something as an all rounder, have always fancied a B5 RS4 or S4.
Are you saying you prefer the M5 to the Rs4?

I have driven but never owned an RS4, lovely noise but felt very secure (4wd and planted) and certainly felt less involving to drive than the E39 M5. I always felt that the RS4 didn't deliver the engaging driving experience I was hoping for, despite being a hugely capable machine in its own right. I suspect that in poor weather the RS4 would no doubt become more useful!

I think for me the M5 is the better car. I like both cars, but I miss RWD and a big V8. Most of the driving I do is trundling around with the family, so in the M5 I can still enjoy the sound of the V8 and the comparatively sharp turn-in (for something so big). However, the RS4 is best enjoyed foot flat to the floor, which is something I don't often do these days. My M5 didn't cost me particularly much to run over a year, around £750 excluding fuel, whereas my RS4 has been about £4k and currently has another vacuum issue.

I think either car feels special and the RS4 has received loads of positive comments, including someone coming to my door asking to buy it. I have enjoyed owning both cars, but in the time in which they overlapped, I generally drove the M5. I think of the two, it feels less like a normal car with a lot of power.

Well, the new house build is coming on rather better than expected, probably as the weather has been kind to us. The foundation dig is nearly complete and the concrete will be arriving soon!

The M5 is going to have to go, I reduced the price again this morning (see PH classifieds) and have had a few calls. Although no one has come to see it yet!

Going to be very sad to see the back of it...

My immaculate 2002 E39 M5 is now official up for sale... see PH classifieds for full info.

We are undertaking a new house build which is gathering pace, the foundation works are nearly complete so it would be good to free up some funds.
