It's not all about the investment; it's about the irreplaceability (it simply isn't replaceable....
I can totally empathise with you on the irreplaceable side of things. I have a Megane 225 and a Twingo 133 Gordini which I've owned from new and put very few miles on. By that I mean the Megane has just over 3k and the Twingo just over 1k. They're not worth heaps of money so unless I'm desperate for the cash, I'd rather preserve them and enjoy them in years to come.

I've had a few digs from people about why I'd bother trying to do that, when they're never going to make money. Like anyone buys a fast Renault with the intention of making money haha. Admittedly the V6 Clio and R26.R seem to be holding their prices or appreciating but generally, it's not exactly a financial investment haha.

Yeah, I am not going to take it out, park it in a multi-storey, grab a pint of milk and head home...

People forget - That's not pleasurable driving, that's shopping.

I consider a drive for the hell of it to be leaving the house, doing a few miles on quiet roads and ending back at my house... Without risking people on the narrow lanes near us doing the school run!

Like I said though; people can think what they like. I look after it, enjoy it (in my own way) and love it. Who's to say another owner has more fun taking theirs to the office each day? That's just not for me.

I am fairly sure some PHers will start boycotting places like Beaulieu soon because their cars don't get used wink

I agree with what you're saying but also remember what you said last year:

There is a temptation to keep the miles down but I just love it so much and driving it is always an occasion so I'll get it out as much as possible.

Not sure I get it?

It gets used often... but not a lot in miles. Hasn't been put away for about 3+ months.

Like I've always said; I only do 5k a year across all cars. Just how many miles do people expect me to put on a 3rd car?

It seems odd that everyone else seems more obsessed by the mileage (or lack of) than me. Let's just say that, despite the low mileage, it hasn't needed to be on a charger conditioner in many months!

If you put it that way then fair enough. For me personally I just don't get people that buy cars and get precious over driving them in case they get damaged or the mileage goes up and devalues it, I can't see the point!

Get precious over our Fiat 500? No.

Get precious over our BMW 545i? No.

Get precious over our 106 XSi? No.

Get precious over our irreplaceable Clio V6, which was 1 of 8 when it left the factory, probably only 1 of a couple left and possibly the most original? Yes.

If one X5 tries to squeeze past on our single lane roads (as they do, day in, day out) and takes a rear wing; that's the end of that.

The upside is that when the roads are quiet round here; it's great. Now it's dark, wet and cold - it probably won't do many more miles this year.

As for investment - I suspect I've lost more than the car's value due to a Trump win in the US, this morning. We move on...

Ignore the "wasting it" comments, fair play for keeping it in great condition and enjoying it as you please, after all it is YOUR car.

Still remember when I first saw the Phase 1 on show when released, as you say totally off the wall for a mainstream manufacture at the time to put into production. Here's a pic of the photo I took way back when.

Look forward to having a nose around it on Sunday thumbup
Glad they ditched those wheels...

Great car OP, don't blame you for wanting to preserve it. You'll probably do as many miles in the Clio as I do in my 205, but like me, those miles will put a huge smile on your face which makes ownership totally worth it!

I saw the Clio at Goodwood and it looked great. Didn't twig it was yours but commented to my friend it must be one of the only ones without a V6 ... plate!

I have had my eye on a V6 plate for a while but I've never been sure that I'm a personal reg kind of person, to be honest.

That's not to disparage personal reg owners - just not sure I quite 'get it'. The car stands out pretty well as it is and it's age is not something I want to hide.

Having said that (how do you check these things?) I think it may have had a personal reg on it in a previous life?!

To totally contradict myself; we bought Mrs9's Fiat 500 new from the garage and I am sure we settled on buying there as the first two letters of the plate are her initials wink

It's looking stunning outside today, in the gloom, covered in rain - shiny!

Will be taking the dog to the woods now she's home from 'daycare'... Will not be taking the V6 wink
