Cost, cost and cost as I understand it. The cost of transporting the full container up to Grangemouth from Southampton and then returning the empty container back to Southampton in time to avoid demurrage charges is significantly more than the way it is being done.

I'm happy to wait an extra week or so if it saves me several hundreds of pounds on the landed price smile

I've always loved these and IMO undervalued...
I think they represent good value for money, but at the end of the day the market sets the prices.

I guess that not everyone wants or gets the pickup thing, and there can be no denying that the Elk's Chevelle sibling of the same year is a far sexier thing which in turn = ker-ching!

That said when I look at the prices being asked for some seventies and eighties Yanks now (many of which were simply dire and don't even look good IMHO) then for a pukka 60's classic this looks like superb value to me...

Yes, this one

is possibly my favourite look so far too. Good chance mine may look similar, at least for a little while....
Cracking thread, and I agree that looks great. I'm not a fan of huge chrome wheels and low profiles on old muscle cars, the wheels on that one look superb IMO.

Mini update - very nearly at Halifax, Nova Scotia.

I have to say, having been browsing images of all the places the ship has been, Nova Scotia has surprised me the most - through pure ignorance I thought it was probably a bit of a grim place!

Could really have been more wrong...

No indeed, Nova Scotia, like everywhere in Canada I've visited, is pretty awesome.

Great thread BTW, envious over here. smile

Bloody hell, Romulus is almost at Antwerp now. I think it's quite interesting how it appears that you don't have to put right out to sea to go from there to Rotterdam, there are cuttings and channels around the weird reclaimed land masses.

I've even found a webcam in the area, I'm wondering if it'll be possible to see the ship on there in a bit...

I've had a crap day, I'm living vicariously through this.

EFA: It didn't gofar enough to be seen on the webcam but has docked now. I need to get out.

No, I'd not realised that until looking on the marine traffic map, zoomed out, and wondering why there were loads of ships that had run aground by about 10 miles!! idea

laugh Glad it has helped you make it through your day!

Shame the ship didn't reach the webcam, that's a cracking find. With a 1 second refresh rate it's almost a live stream.

I don't know if the container is still on Romulus or not at this point, not sure whether Jim gets that information, but I suspect not. I've asked the question though.

Regardless, I'll follow Romulus to Rotterdam just in case...

The container is now provisionally due in Grangemouth on Monday aboard the ship "Seaboard Patriot".
Let's hope the truck has been described accurately

hell, I've been running about the docks with a tanker for the last 2 weeks and never saw it, as I would remember the colours as most are either dull grey, black or a dark blue or dark green. I should have noticed a nice bright '50s coloured ship!

This saves the best part of a week rather than going into Rotterdam, BUT if it's not off the NYK Romulus quick enough to get on the current sailing for the Seaboard Patriot, we're back to square one on that unless another feeder vessel comes into Antwerp with a space for this box on the return leg to Grangemouth.

So in light of the information kindly obtained by Jim this morning clap, we'll say "Bon voyage and thank you" to NYK Romulus as she continues her journey heading next for Bremerhaven in Germany.

Seaboard Patriot remains moored in Antwerp and here's hoping that a container is currently finding its way to her...

It's odd feeling excited for someone I don't know who is excited by the pending arrival of a car they don't own yet smile
May tune into Desert Car Kings tonight for some inspiration ...

Unfortunately the haulage yard we unload in wont allow it for the usual HSE regulations, but it's best we wait and let me see it for myself first before Mark makes any plans to spend money travelling up etc. I'll go over it, send a description and pictures and then if needed, do a walk round it whilst on the phone, so he can decide if he thinks it will do the job for him. I never take deposits from potential buyers in case when a vehicle arrives it has unexpected problems which we have had in the past. I simply give the potential buyer "first dibs" and once I've given an honest and frank description, we take it from there, or move on to the next in line.
Virtually all my buyers buy unseen and get me to arrange delivery as most of my stuff are projects anyway, so most buyers see the journey to Scotland as an added and unecessarry expense. I've never had a dissapointed buyer, as I don't believe in wasting people's time and don't see the sense in lying about a vehicle just to get it sold, I'd rather do the work needed and add to the price. I've been hit with bad descriptions in the past and vowed as soon as I set up selling these things that I'd never do that to any of my buyers. I'm not afraid to tell a buyer how bad something is, rather than gloss over the bad bits.
All going well, the truck will be in my yard Friday afternoon and straight on the ramp for a look underneath.

Unfortunately they usually do have to put out to sea, as the next stop after Antwerp is often either Bremerhaven orHamburg before finally hitting Rotterdam

Hi, basically as Mark says, cost, plus I'm based in grangemouth and there are three vehicles in the container so makes sense to have it to my door. If I was based in or near Southampton, it would land there, and it is a bit more expensive to have it to Grangemouth, but if I land it in Southampton now, I'd need to pay the dockers to unload which will cost me about £250 per vehicle more than it costs for me to do it up here even after my local haulage charges, etc are paid, and I get to take care unloading my own vehicles rather than it being "just another job" for the dockers (and a pain in the ass at that!). I would then have to have the vehicles brought up here at about £350 per vehicle and if they sit more than 5 days in Southampton, the charges are about £10 per vehicle per day.
Also, if I just got the container landed in Southampton, but got the whole thing transported up to me, I would think the round trip haulage would be about £600 per vehicle as the container would have to be returned empty to Southampton and also we only get 5 days from the arrival in dock to having the container back to dock and in that time it has to be cleared customs before we can arrange anything. The demurrage for not returning it in time is £60 for the first day and £120 per day after that. There's quite a lot more to it than meets the eye

the NYK Romulus is now in Bremerhaven, and the Seaboard Patriot is heading for......... Rotterdam......... anybody's guess where the container is right now. I hope it's on the Seaboard Patriot, 'cause IF the Romulus is going to Rotterdam too, and the container is being swapped there, it WILL miss the Patriot's Grangemouth journey this time round.

What a great thread. Awesome car too, coincidentally I was looking at these on eBay the other day. I came to the conclusion that if you put Chevrolet in to the search engine you get the most interesting, eclectic selection of metal. Far more so than any other manufacturer.

Thanks for the info, it's nice to see the reasons behind stuff.
