So how was the handling day? I like my cars to slide at sane speeds and am thinking of getting a 996 next..
Si, embarrassed to say in missed the session :-(

Basically I have some bad news for you. This thing does not let go until you are going very very quickly. When it is sliding and you apply more throttle to hold the angle it tends to snap back in and tank slap a bit. A bit disconcerting! I may just be being a donkey but given up trying really and decided to enjoy what it's really really good at which is providing ridiculous mechanical grip. Travelled to work with a friend on Saturday morning along some deserted and very greasy roads. His M3 was a left for dead without really trying.

I'm partial to a cheeky bit of oversteer myself but if you are used to the way BMW's do it I think you'd be disappointed.

Obviously I can only comment on the c4. I've seen a chap get massively sideways in a c2 so I'd look in that direction if slidey slidey is a must.

That looks utterly fabulous - I spent most of this afternoon perusing 996 ads on Autotrader and PH with a view to chopping in my Alfa daily hack for something special, and looking at the quality of your car it certainly does not look its age or mileage - well bought!

That red interior would do me just fine, I don't mind black at all but the contrast makes a world of difference. There are a few silver 996s for sale with red interiors which is encouraging.
Red and silver works for me!

These make excellent dailies... as long as you don't need to kart much around with you.

To be honest she does scrub up well, the paint needs a good machine polish, the wheels could do with a full refurb and there are a couple of small dents to sort. Ths thing to be aware of is the interior plastics seem to be prone to scratching. Some of it is painted in this rubbery coating which is very easily marked. Mine has had some bits re-painted. Doesn't look too bad but you can tell it's not OEM. Worth bearing in mind if you see a sound car don't be put off by this. Seems quite common.
Thanks for the tip regarding the interiors, duly noted. If I do make the leap into 911 territory it'll certainly be my daily user but I have access to other vehicles if I need more space for DIY crap / domestic stuff. Nowt wrong with my current (diesel!) Alfa, I just fancy something a bit special really. Some would argue that 996s and 911s in general are far to ubiquitous to be 'special', but I honestly don't see that many of them on my travels and when I do a little voice in my head says ''yes, do it!''. I've also been looking into Caymans but the 911 bug is doing strange things to the old grey matter. I like the unfussy styling of the 996 and can easily see one sat on my drive, ready for daily hacking duties. It's only a two mile run to work, but taking the long way round is always an option and there will always be a good excuse for a proper drive round the leafy lanes of Warwickshire - with the unsociable hours I work I often find the roads are empty, we have some great long straight stretches and twisty bits on our doorstep... driving

That looks ace. Agree with thoughts that the C4S is the pick of the 996 bunch......that ass!

Here's my old motor. Not the same colour, but almost baby version of that interior (terracotta)

I've had the car for a year now. I've put 10k miles on it and it's been an absolute pleasure!

The car had a load of work done by hartech before I bought it but a few things needed addressing;

-Geo was out and caused the inner edge of both rear tyres to wear out.

-Shifting was a bit woolly at times.

-Rear coffin arm bushes squeaking.

-Air con condensors shot. No AC.

-Clutch feeling a bit worn, suspected duel mass flywheel worn. Tricky to shift smoothly in low gears.

It's been an expensive month!

The car has had;

New condensors fitted and re gas
2 x PS2 rear tyres
New rear coffin arms
New clutch
New dual mass flywheel
New shifter cables
Service and geometry set up at hartech.

I don't really want to add all that up but I know there won't be much change from 3k. It's been money well spent, the car is so much easier to drive with the new clutch and fly wheel and the gear change is so much better it's like a different car.

As expected the alignment is spot on, drives wonderfully, a lot more settled and the rear seems to be a lot more planted in particular.

Yes my wallet hurts but it's worth it to know the car is mechanically 100%.

Few cosmetic bits next on the list!

I found this thread after starting to research the C4S. Have to say OP this one looks great and good to see that you are using it regularly.
My ambition is slightly different in that I want a good one with lowish miles as an investment & toy for use during the summer.
I know full well you can't run a Porker on a budget - many years ago had a 944 which needed no end of TLC and £££s. But a 911 has always been ambition and when the time comes (and I have enough in the coffers which isn't yet) I want to make sure I get the right model.

The body of the C4S v the Carrera 2 does it for me and I think it will be an affordable classic. It seems to carry a lot of affection amongst the Porsche fraternity. Oddly, and I can't put my finger on why, it I find this model more appealing than say the 997, even though the 997 S is becoming very affordable. Which one would attract classic status first, if at all? Suspect the C4S?

I don't want to get too hett up about it being a classic, I love the marque and it seems from reading this thread everyone on here does too. I'd love to have an unabused example that I can keep for a very long time, and lose some of my endless urges to change cars from getting bored! biggrin

I'd consider a black steering wheel to accentuate the red.
That red interior is stunning.

Interesting you mention the 7S. Ive been toying with the idea of swapping for one.

It's very tempting. For me the pro's and cons are:

7 C2s:

+2WD for more slidey
+front end looks better
+lower miles
+silver so looks cleaner!
+Faster

-Common as far as 911's go. Outsold the regular C2 by 8-1 IIRC?
-Silver so bit boring
-Rides higher
-Doesn't have THE BUM
-May drop in value in short term, 6 4S will likely rise. Already has done.

If you are looking for a C4S i know of one for sale same spec as mine, full heartache rebuild with black interior. 40K miles with tippy box @£25K

It certainly divides opinion!

Thinking about sending the seats, wheel and gear knob off to southbound for re-trim in the same colour.

In theory you'd think it would work but I've seen BOX's with black wheels and they don't look that great.

I've been looking at Cup steering wheels :-S
