Just so you're in the know, unless I read this wrong. That's not a different cover, it's a different engine. AJ 16 and AJ6 comparativelyCharlesdeGaulle said:
BV72 - I am shortly to view a V12 XJS.
It has some rust which seems to be superficial and surface, but I won't know for sure until I view. Would you mind giving me an idea of ball-park costs for rectification based on your experience please? It's on a front corner of the bonnet and on one wing.
I know that bodywork, panels and paint all add up pretty quickly, but a sense of the rough order of magnitude of what someone has paid recently would be very useful.
Cheeky I know, but thanks in advance.
Mon General et M. le President, I have not yet sorted the bodywork on my car, so cannot tell you the full horror. I hope it will not be too bad. When I have a moment, I will email you deets of a specialist Jag scrappy. You could prob get a complete wing for about 150 quid ish. Put in on, paint it, off you go. I may buy a donor car that has an XJS number plate that I have been offered for not much. Body on that one better than mine, but it has some mech issues, so mine may be the one to save, possibly with a plate transfer to add chav points and maybe resale value, not that I GAF about the latter, as cars are for fun, not investment. PS: surely you should have a DS Pallas?

I don't know if it's the same on them, but with similar age XJ40s the fuseboxes in the footwells get cracks in the solder that cause all sorts of random electrical issues. I split mine open & resoldered them, which fixed 90% of the quirks the car had at the time.
Many thanks, I will check this, as the car does have a few electrical oddities, none of which have thus far caused a big problem, but which it would be good to resolve if I can. The battery was indeed hopelessly mismatched, and was a tiny thing more suited to a small hatchback than a big engined car. New battery now fitted.
Does anyone want a light blue six cylinder auto XJS convertible that has groovy quad headlamps? Looks OK from a quick shuftie. For sale near me, might be gettable for 4500 ish.
My Jaaaaaag is a rusty as ever, but is running smoothly. Apart from being mega rusty, its main issue at present is a knackered gearbox mounting, attributable, I think, to a very badly designed speed bump at a posh hotel not far from where I live. I am not usually one for complaining and suing people and stuff, but I might bang off a polite but firm letter about the damage. I drove mega slowly across the bump, but the bump was so high and pointy that it did for me anyway. The car weighs a lot, and is quite low. Ker-runch.
Here is the car during and after getting the love from the local Romanian/Hungarian car wash dudes. Hard working guys, they put in a big effort. The car looks much better in photos than it does in real life!

Any pics or more details BV? I am mid-search as we speak. Could very well be interested. I was there this morning! The photos are dire, as the car is hemmed in by several vans. The dude selling it was not there to talk to. The interior is blue and looks to be in good condition.
PS: I am on a train and the photos won't upload via the crappy Chiltern Wifi, so I will post them when home, if the knackered old Beemer at the station will start.
EDIT: Rubbish photos below -

Meanwhile I shall witter on about learning to drive an XJS fast on bendy roads. These cars are heavy! I am not sure if the brakes on mine are quite what they should be, or if the type is just a bit under-braked*. You really have to anticipate and set up for the corners well in advance. Mucho old school SIFO, but very entertaining when you get it right, and you can push on very splendidly from the apex.
* My old Interceptor had XJS front brakes, considered a major upgrade on standard Jensen brakes.

Well, it's back, and it's goppingly hideous! The bonnet was replaced with one almost but not quite the same green as the old one. The boot is now gold! The offside front wing is blue. Hey, the coachline matches. The offside rear arch is not yet replaced, but will be in due course. The bonnet cable has snapped, so the bonnet is ajar.
Photos later. Here it is at a station car park ready to ps off two proud XK8 owners when they get back from work. Bad lighting conceals the fact that the XJS looks like st. Still drives great, though!

BTW, the Beta Coupe was this one - it looked MUCH worse than this in real life.
I sold it for 500 quid to a dude on another forum, who tried to give me grief because it was mega rusty, but given that the for sale ad had said words to the effect that the car was mega rusty and that buying it would require welding skillz and big cojones, I politely encouraged him to desist, and he did. What then befell the heap I know not.
