Nice car.
Look up Pukar Designs if you fancy some new decals for the engine bay.
Got a set for my E24. Good quality.
Just need to get the cam cover redone like yours
Thanks I will have a look, most of mine are original but in understandably poor condition. Some decent replacements could be good.

That's a pretty car. Mine is in the shop getting work on. We're stuck on the rear calipers which need rebuilding and caliper kits seem to be unobtainable. I'm trying to see if other kits (Saab 900) will work. Next is the valve adjustment and then it will be ready for me to pick up and I can hand over my E24 M635CSI
One of each, great stuff! Have you thought of starting a thread on them both - would be really interesting to hear about their history and your experiences with them. Have you spoken to any any of the caliper rebuild specialists such as https://www.biggred.co.uk/ to see if they can assist? On that website if you go to ‘components’ and put your reg number in it comes up with various rebuild kits.

I live in Texas so I need to find a local resource for rebuilding calipers, although it does not look hard and I can probably do it myself with the right kit. I do post on youtube but as I have about 50 odd cars in a building with one door, For that reason, once a car makes its way to the back of the building, it never get driven. I am trying to make an effort to revive them both after they sat almost 10 years.

The M5 had low compression on cylinder #3. I pulled the head off and had a machine shop replace the burnt valve and put it back on. The car had sat so long that both fuel pumps failed along with the injectors (that's what ethanol does). I replaced the external fuel pump and the injectors which was enough to get it running terribly and then sent the car to my friend Mark who is retired BMW mechanic that used to wrench on these cars when they were new. We became friends after I bought the E24 M635CSI which had a phone book worth of receipts with his shop name on it.

He's been going through it at his own pace and fixing stuff that would be beyond me to fix like the door locks as he still maintains a parts stash for those little tricky jobs.

Hi Sutts.

I saw you in your beautiful looking M5 heading into Maidstone yesterday around 11am,
I was the one gawping at you from my E46 330ci, if you noticed.

Great to see the car being used and enjoyed, and it was a pleasure to see it! cool

Hi Martin, yes I did notice your car! It’s amazing how quickly the number of tidy E46 3 series has reduced on the road so you were always going to stand out - give me a wave and flash next time if I don’t beat you to it! Do you still live in the Cripple Street area? It is really good to be back out in it and I’ve already done a couple of hundred miles since last week.

Thank you, I know design naturally moves on and and it’s a cliche to go on about it, but I don’t have any real interest in any recent BMW designs since the last M2 Competition.

I don't think you're alone in that, i'd agree that's where BMW started 'losing their way'. It's funny even the people buying current M cars seem to be getting them in dark colours, and more often than not when asked about their choice it's justified by 'Wellllll it doesn't look too bad in black'. I think you could have an E28/24 in st brown and it would still look great, plus you don't have to deal with the endless electronic systems etc diluting the driving experience to try and mask the weight of the damn thing cool

I think E46s (particularly a 330 M-Sport) stand out to those who know, to most it's just an old BMW.
About 25 years ago I had an absolute shed of an E28 528I, and even that was a lot of fun, ha!
I'll certainly give you a wave next time I see you.

I do still live just off Cripple Street, not sure how you know that, ha!?
Great to know the car is out and about, have fun! smiledriving

Would this be the car I've seen around Maidstone a few times in the last week or two?

If not I've seen a very similar one on the A229 Loose Road near the fire station, and somewhere else I can't remember!

Looked gorgeous, and damn cool! cool
Hi there, yes that's me - I live quite close to the fire station so you may see me out and about a fair bit! My daily is (as of today) a grey '02 plate 530i Touring. I've just sold my grey Audi RS4 Avant (sob) which you may have seen or heard (Milltek!) if you live or work in the area.
Hi.
I live just off Cripple Street, so must be quite close.

Next time I see you whilst walking or driving my grey 350Z I'll wavey
Haha, you mentioned it back in 2015 not long after I started the thread!

I’d recently noticed that the driver’s seat plastic insert with the M colours on had (as they will always eventually do) given up and snapped in half, so ordered a new one from my local dealer and picked it up today for a grand total of £11.02 (including 10% BMWCC discount, ha).

Here’s the broken one still in place

Replacement requires just two screws to be removed at the base of the rigid seat back piece before that lifts away to reveal the the rather over-engineered electric headrest mechanism with the badge pins hidden behind:

While I was there I noticed what I believe to be the build date stamped on to seat foam - 22/9/87

The pins can be be bent straighter to allow them to be pulled back through the seat, pictured here after removal with the new one waiting to go in

Once the new one is pushed through the pins are bent back flush to hold it firmly in place, and the seat back replaced. Quite a satisfying 15 minute job!

I ordered a set of seat badges from BMW a few years ago, and they arrived with the stripes offset way over to one side. Sent them back, the next set came the same. Sent THOSE back, and the third set were fine. Always an element of pot luck with some of the older parts!

Nice little job to tick off though thumbup

I went to a BMWCC event for pre-2000(ish) cars today, and was very happy to find not only another E28 M5, but a Cirrus Blue car that is 12 chassis numbers earlier than mine at no. 173 of the 187 RHD cars. I had a long chat with the very pleasant owner comparing and contrasting the cars and our experiences.

The icing on the cake was this incredibly rare E12 Alpina B7 S Turbo in superb condition. Approx 330 bhp saloon in 1982!

Mine is, er, resting at the moment. Needs some fettling post the 2019 trip through Scandinavia, and is quite far down the list at the moment.

That B7 looks familiar, and there can’t be many around. Think I saw it at Classics on the Common in Harpenden a few years ago.

There was the first frost of the Autumn last night so before the council start throwing salt around I gave the M5 a wash, topped it up with V-Power and air and took it out for run to collect the kids from hockey.

It had been a while since they’d been out in it, so much fun was had testing the sunroof, ashtrays, electric headrests and windows! It was running well after the recent service work.

Looking back at older photos they’re certainly growing up fast! These two were in 2019.

Car looking quite sharp in the sun

Back in the garage now, clean and dry and hooked up to the battery conditioner, it’s quite likely I will SORN it from next month through until March. I live on a short private road so can still run it up to temperature now and again on dry days if need be.
