I still have the E39. Not had chance to drive the E60 yet. The E39 hasn't turned a wheel for Judt under 2 months now. I feel a bit sorry for it.

Still really in two minds what to do with it

Sounds like you need to move on. I wasn't sure whether to sell my E39 M5 and dithered for about a year before selling it. Even bought a new Eisenmann to see if that bought back the spark. Sold it 6 months after buying the Eisenmann. Thought I'd miss it after after 4. years of ownership but can't say I did. As great as it was I was bored with it and needed a bit more power and something more modern. I've never hankered after another, great car though but things move on.
Sounds like you don't have the budget for the F10 M5 and the E60 you are bit worried about reliability wise from reading your other posts. Have you thought about a Lexus I-SF? Reliable, sound better than an E39 M5 and they feel slightly quicker and more responsive. My brother in law bought a brand new one when I had my E39 and i drove it a few times, had the edge in a straight line over a stock E39 M5. Very useable car, seems like your not getting much use out of your M5.

The M5 is back in daily use. New wheel bearing tomorrow. Typically since I started using it again it has managed to get a smashed front fog light. New one ordered and will be replaced soon.

Im going to fit new tyres and get the tracking all sorted.

Done around 1k miles since it was pressed back into daily service.

I'd like to itch the E60 scratch but cannot justify yet another car on the drive until one of the others goes. I know the internet is full of horror stories but there is a cracking looking one for sale locally, turns out it is well known to my friend that runs a specialist garage and I've been advised to go nowhere near it or knock at least 4k off the asking, this one appears to be a mechanical pit but I also know that go into it eyes wide open and fix the big ticket items and it should be fine.

As I've been out of contract since the end of 2016 my e39 has not really moved much either. Currently need to replace the washer fluid pump which is a PITA. I had some split washer hoses so BMW arranged replacement ones but failed to take into account the y-pipe version for the (never used) high density wash. I only noticed the error half way through replacing everything so now I'm decommissioning the high density wash and tapping off the pipes.

Went to move the car on Sunday to get nothing at the crank, the bloody tracker had drained the battery. Now fully charged its on the list to do this week. Then once the weather improves and as I have the time off I'm going to do an initial 3 day clean (I'm planning on a g-technic ceramic coat later in the year with a pro detailer). Then, even if there are no apparent fault codes, replacing all the sensors (maf and cps) along with oil change.

The cars are a labour of love but reward so much.

Last weekend finally got around to doing the VANOS board maintenance. No broken connections which is good.

Tested all solenoids and they all work. Replaced all of the seals and gaskets and replaced the spark plugs at the same time.

The car runs no better. Next step is trying to find time to do some logging. I get married in 3 weeks and move house soon, so the car is on the back burner.

Sold this tonight. Some good times and bad times in it. The E55 is keeping me happy though.

How does it compare to the E55?

I am looking into these two but can for the life of me not decide between them smile

The E55 is ballistic fast compared to the M5, and the M5 isn't slow. The M5 handles better, shrinks around you and is the better drivers car. It has better steering, better feel, better brake feel, better looking and feels more special. The E55 feels a bit car, handles a bit like a boat, but it is comfier, has better toys, much better audio, so much faster, more tuning potential.

The M5 was more rust prone, more fragile and parts aren't cheap from BMW. The E55 is none of those, though I haven't price up parts from MB yet!

I'd have another M5, but it would need to be well sorted and supercharged. Otherwise my next car after this will be an F10 M5 or a W212 E63 BiTurbo

I think that pretty well sums up my feeling on the two. The E39 M5 is an absolutely brilliant car and I've loved both of mine. I would absolutely have another, but they are getting pretty old and fragile to be much more than weekend cars. I think they are special enough to be weekend cars, but others would suggest a big family car should be used daily. I think that's where the problems with them come in, there are now more reliable, faster alternatives which are cheaper to buy and run. There is just about nothing out there that can take four people as comfortably as an E39 M5 and then handle as well down a b-road though. smile

Personally, I just don't fancy an E55, whereas I very much fancy the E39 M5. I do really like the F10 M5 and W212 E63 though, both are incredible cars and pretty handsome.

Agree fully. The E55 is a stop gap, but one that ticks a lot of boxes for me. I don't need to worry about it as much as my M5. Oil usage is better, it runs better, it has folding seats which I really missed as well. The E39 M5 would run rings around the E55 in the corners, but the E55 would catch up (pass?) on the straights.

I didn't think I'd like the E55 tbh. I had considered and then discounted one a few times, and then decided to have a go in one. Sold! lol
