I remember when my dads business was doing alright in the early 90's and he treated himself to a 1989 (2 year old) 535i manual in black with leather interior. That was a great car and couldn't half get a move on.
We got nicked for speeding on the autobahn, towing a caravan smile. Fine was 140dm if my memory serves correctly. Speed limit was apparently 50 mph with a trailer not 75-80.

The old chap did 50k in the first year in it too. All at 18 mpg or thereabouts. He was a bit heavy footed though, those were the days where 100mph was the normal cruising speed in the right lane of the motorway. At least, it was for him wink

Mine did that. Drilled and fiddled it out and bought replacement on eBay.

Bloomin Cherman fiddly bits. A tail lamp bulb blew on the Bimmerheap. The bulb sits in a self Earthing plastic holder that you can pull out from inside the boot, but I cannot for the life of me get the freckin thing to go back in properly, so the connection keeps failing. Now I find myself sat in dark lay bys fiddling with the rump of some old German girl.
You're doing it right, if memory serves (still does occasionally) you have to put it back in one side first and then generally fiddle about. It will suddenly go back in and you will have no idea how you did it.

As with the rest of the fleet, a lovely car. You are not that far from me, keep hoping to see one of them out and about.

Brilliant thread makes me want another old beemer although my current 15yr old 320i E46 actually can do the wafting bit fairly well with its black leather & walnut lounge.

Two of my favouritest cars as you also have a fondness

My old E30 318iS was a hoot to drive and still regret selling it.

Manual 525i sport had to have it when I saw it advertised locally and was previously owned by Peter Beardsley. It didnt put me off biggrin

Agree with the comments regarding replacing rear light bulbs....my E36 318iS has similar units....they are an absolute pain to replace....and also as has been said they then just pop in and you cannot work out how it happened !!

I jiggle it about, jiggle it about, and jiggle it about, but still it won't stay in properly. But, hey, back to the tail light.... It goes in and the light comes on. Five minutes down the road the dashboard bongs in that annoying bongy way that it has, because the connection has worked loose. Personally, I blame Angela Merkel, if only because everything is her fault these days.

Here's a thing about driving a BMW that is on the borders of banger/classic territory: It is still a BMW. This means that everyone else thinks "He's in a BMW, and therefore is a ". No fker will cut you the slightest slack when changing lanes, trying to get out of a junction, and so on. In fact the only chance that you have of getting let out at a junction is to wait until someone else in a BMW comes along. But he won't let you out, because he's in a BMW, and therefore is a .

The car is generally going OK, but occasionally the autobox doesn't like to go into reverse gear when the car is hot at the end of a journey, and sometimes the car conks out when I go to reverse or back to D whilst parking. I will check all the fluids, cooling and so on.

I either saw this car, or a very similar one for sale last night whilst browsing the net for classic cars.
(I always do it after a few beers)

Are you selling it?

I'm not asking for myself, it would need cream leather and black paint frown
