Some of you may remember, I did write up my own review on my last car and post it here. Well, it got a positive reaction and I enjoy writing about cars, so here’s an Owners review for the Toyota GT86.

First things first with this car, there’s something I’m going to address before everyone else says it. Yes, it isn’t as powerful as a lot of other cars in 2015. Especially considering the latest breed of hot-hatches over the past few years, and the endless quest for numbers being pursued by manufactures. And I’ve realised since getting one, half your time seems to be justifying that it “only” has 200bhp. But trust me, its enough, and I’ll get into that.

How did you end up here?

Well its an odd one really. My Last car (MK1 Octavia VRS) literally had no wrong with it, in fact it was probably the cleanest example of one in the Country. However, being a petrol head I’m always looking for the next thing. For the past few years I’ve been looking at a new, or nearly new car, but never quite committing. Recently at work I got a promotion, and it really gave me a push to start looking a bit harder for newer stuff.

I started off with the usual suspects at my budget (Around £20k). The Fiesta ST, a great car I’m sure, but that driving position and cheap interior really put me off. The new Polo GTI, the build quality is truly outstanding but it just was missing something, maybe a more involving drive? For sure my MK5 Golf GTI was much more fun behind the wheel. There were many more to this, but to cut a long story short the GT86 kept catching my eye. I’ve loved them since they were new, and I love the concept behind it. As it turns out, a quick message to a friend who works at my local Toyota on a Sunday, turned into a test drive on the Monday. As soon as I got in it, I realised its something I needed. I bought it within the week as a 23rd Birthday present to myself.

Whats it like to live with?

Surprising, is what I’d say. But for good reason. I was fully prepared to have a car that was slightly impractical, and if we’re being honest, a bit silly. However, it’s totally usable day to day, even more-so than I first thought. Being 6ft 4, I get uncomfortable easy in cars, especially small sporty ones. But somehow there’s just the right amount of leg room there, with probably the most comfortable seats I’ve sat in. No, really, they are fantastic. A rare combination of supportive, comfortable and easy to get in and out of (Oh and heated…). The peddles are a little off centre, but no more than most BMW’s or bigger Audis.

Fuel consumption is a matter of contention on these. It’s a pretty small tank, and I get just under 300 miles out of it. Thats about 30-35mpg of Shells Finest. Not bad, but not great. This was something I didn’t really care about, but its nice to know if I’m careful I could get more. The main problem is its just too much fun, why would you crawl around in 6th when you can rev its tits off?

What don’t you like so much?

There’s a few issues, as you’d expect, although mostly niggles. The heated seat switches look like something from Maplins, and don’t light up properly. The stereo has a bit of a clunky UI, and it being a touch screen in such a firm car is a recipe for annoyance. And the keyless locking system doesn't unlock the passenger door, which 90% of the time for me isn't a problem. There’s probably a setting for that last one, but I haven't found it if there is.

What do you like?

The car, for the most part has really impressed me. The forward visibility is excellent thanks to no big ugly pillars in the way. The wheel sticks out towards you, and the short throw gear lever is so perfectly placed.

There’s also a lot of little features I like. For example, because the washer fluid bottle is mounted out of sight and low down, it has its own little dip stick. Another thing is the sheer amount of cubbyholes and stuff in the car, good for making sure stuff doesn't slide around when you’re going for it.

And you will be going for it, a lot. Its difficult (although, not impossible) to be sensible in this thing. It begs to be revved, and loves sticking its tail out. Most of my local roads are tight, twisty B roads and its just perfect for them. I can honestly say I don’t think I’ve driven anything that puts such a smile on my face. The power is more than enough for what it is, Its so satisfying hitting the limiter in every gear, and not having to worry about a fiery death or speeding ticket. The intake noise is pumped into the cabin, which is a bit annoying but it does add to the feel when you want to go for it.

Shut up and Summarise, you’re boring everyone.

Its fantastic. I love it. It ticks every box I want it to, and it came in about £5k under my maximum spend. As well as that, Toyota do decent finance deals on used cars, which Audi and VW were less inclined to. Couple that with a warranty, and you can actually justify it as a sensible purchase. Just get used to explaining to EVERYONE that 200bhp is enough.

Great review. Your enthusiasm shines through. So much more interesting reading someone's impressions of a driving experience than an endless succession of topics about car values on gets on the supercar forums

Your GT86 looks like a great example and it sounds like you're getting the most out of it. Enjoy!

Great review OP!

I won a competition to drive one up the Goodwood hill when they were first released, but they gave me an auto!

Anyway for my birthday (many years older than you laugh) last year I test drove a manual one but new prices put me off, although it was a great drive!

I ended up buying a Z4C, a car I had fancied for years and I love it. But as an RWD fan I may well have one at some point.

The seating / driving position is just so right.

Keep enjoying yours. thumbup

Starting to like these more. I still can't get my head round what they were thinking with those wheels though.

If you don't like the piped engine noise, peel back the carpet under the pedals and plug the hole using the plug you'll find in the glove box covering the electrical port. Lots more good information on the US forum.

That's lovely.

Not sure why you were expecting it to be 'a bit silly', though?

Thanks! Yeah the Auto is almost a second slower to 60, but apparently you can still have a fair bit of fun in it! A Z4C was a likely contender, but my used GT86 with its 2 years left of warranty won that battle! Last time I had a BMW with that Engine it cost me an arm and a leg in repair bills, which hasnt helped my BMW experience frown

I would happily admit they are probably the worst wheels fitted to a factory car.

Thanks mate! This is showing up how lazy I am not looking haha. That'll stop my mates sniggering when they get in.

Ah yes, someone did say this! May have to for longer trips. Thanks smile

I'm not sure. A little RWD Sports car, with skinny tyres and a revvy engine? A lot more sensible cars I could've purchased I suppose. But it's a very usable car.

I love mine it's a superb drive. The car has such a great balance and the way it draws you into driving it quicker and quicker is indication of how much fun it is. I think if it had more power and fatter tyres it just wouldn't be so much fun. The driving position is perfection and allows easy heel and toeing.

I would recommend a GT to anyone and that's having owned a 182 and an Exige

-UPDATES-

So nothing much has changed on the car, but I thought I'd update my little ownership log. Overall its been fantastic, its very much the car for me. However, there are a lot that don't "get" it and I can see why. A lot of passengers find it a tad unrefined and harsh, as do I in many ways. However it all adds to its feel in my eyes, maybe I'm just wearing rose tinted glasses.

In recent cold weather, the heated seats have been a god send. However the factory mats are susceptible to dirt, so I had to get some rubber mats to keep them fresh (The most middle aged thing a 23 year old has ever said?). Also find this weather great fun for some low speed arse out action, but the tyres really need changing. At high speed that completely remove all confidence, they make the car feel nervous on the limit. I think the width isn't the problem, its the Michelins themselves.

As for the bad stuff? Well I had to take it back to Toyota to fix a few "Common Issues". Mainly, a small oil leak and fogging up rear lights. As well as this, I did add a fault for the windows not working but I then realised they had just freaked out and gone into a failsafe mode. A simple reset sorted it.

Anyway, I took the car too them and had a few days in a Yaris. It may have only been 3 days, but it really made me miss the little GT86! Was genuinely excited to get back in it. The service at the garage was less than perfect, however.

Of the issues, they fixed none. Apparently they needed "More proof" I had an ongoing leak before fixing under warranty, even though nearly every GT86 that left the factory has it. They also apparently replaced just 1 of the rear light seals, both still are pretty bad. Out of curiosity, I checked my dashcam. The video showed them being pretty careless, and their mechanic basically slagging me off etc.

So on the 10th of March It'll be going back, after I humored their "come back in 1000 miles" line. When I rang the service manager after the first time, he pretty much fobbed me off with excuses but hopefully this time something gets done. I didn't tell them about the camera the first time so will be interesting to see what happens this time...

Anyway, enough of the negatives, I love this car when its clean!

Tyre choice is proving tricky for these. I ditched the Michelins in short order and replaced with Goodyear F1 Assymetric 2 which are great when new, but the rears are poor after 5,000 miles and finished at 8,000. Fronts not a lot better. I've got through 3 sets on the rear and two sets on the front but I'm going to try something different next.
Currently sporting Nexen Win-Guard winter tyres which are pretty good but my new rims will have something else for the Summer.

I'm still on Prius set! I find them fine and fit for purpose (fun). That said I'll choose something else when they finally wear thin. I'm not after absolute grip, quite the opposite.
I was wondering about conti sports, any thoughts? Or maybe Rainsports, good for wet but still playful in the dry.
