I think the main issue with the 2.5 was the early UK ones. Bad map on thoses. Not heard any issues regarding the JDM ones and also any that have been mapped correctly for v-power etc. Obviously, boost levels not too crazy helps too. Lots of the litchfields ones still running 330bhp from new with no issues.
Unfortunately they suffer more than just map issues, know a couple of Litchfield ones thar have been rebuilt due to the dreaded ring land failure, now running forged pistons but still not kicking the backside out of the power (330bhp).tonyb1968 said:

Mine's a Litchfield with the 330bhp map etc. I'll pass through 70k miles tomorrow afternoon I think, and the car gets driven as intended.... Not saying they're all spot on, but I have come to thinking that engine failures on the 20 and 25s are mostly down to not keeping on top of maintenance. Not a week goes by where I hear about top/bottom end knocks, ring lands, melted pistons through various clubs etc. All wholly preventable.
Again, from experience and lots of reading, problems seem to be on the 2008 onwards ( hatch model ). The cast pistons and a bad map on the UK spec ones were to blame, done by Prodrive. This one seems good, zero oil consumption but due a change anytime. Coming up to 6 months since the last one ( less than 500 mile though ). Proper warm up, cool down and regular high quality oil and filter is the best thing for any turbo powered car.
Not Prodrives fault, IM wouldnt let them change the map, just adjust it for more power, even the Pro R mapped cars let go, issues started in 2006 with the hawks and still continue today with the 2015/2016 cars.
The engine has serious issues, cracking between cylnders is very common, even the CS400's have had failures (first one was soon after they came out) but they have oil pick up issues due to the position of the oil feesd pipe... its not a nice engine, hence the japanese stuck to 265 ps and used only auto boxes on the wrx sti's

all good here so far, although only on 50k miles. Millers CFS and genuine black filter ready to go on. may try a JDM pink STI filter on it this time though. not sure if they are worth the extra 20 quid or not ? will replace the K+N air filter with a Cosworth one or might even try the genuine STI one. seem a bit pricey but they were for the Group N car. on a side note, friend just bought a Group N Impreza for the forest.

Never had any issues with the standard filters but most STI items are better.
STI panel filter is expensive but gives excellent filtration for decent power gains, just note that it is a service item with a 20k mile life expectency (use to use them in both my Spec C's)
thanks. may give one a try. 20k miles, that'll be about 10 years then ! STI panel filter is expensive but gives excellent filtration for decent power gains, just note that it is a service item with a 20k mile life expectency (use to use them in both my Spec C's)
Car looks great.
I bought a Pro-R filter (OEM upgrade) for my Impreza STI and its a foam filter (no oil) made by Pipercross I believe. You just wash it in warm water to clean it out for a service, so I'd go that route if you wanted to change.
Saying that, I had a K&N in my last Impreza WRX and had no problems with that either. Not sure it would be worth changing it - just clean and lightly re-oil with the proper cleaning kit. If your worried about the MAF and oil, you could clean it every service as well with the filter for piece of mind.

Lovely looking Forester STI and an interesting choice of fun car, especially coming from that VAG background.
So you're another one keeping an eye out for an Imola B5 RS4! Me too and I know of a few others looking including the previous owner of my old Noggy blue one. Only 4 Imolas in the UK, I think. I remember one being broken for parts. Eeshk.
