I hadn't seen a reply in the other thread

So why are you wasting your time with this when you can go and get an e60 and actually enjoy it

I had an e38 between moving house when I sold my e92 and they're a pain to work on when they're in the above condition.

Why not cut your loses and get rid of it, you're in real danger of spending the purchase price a good few times over when you shovel of just bought a £2k one to begin with.
So far ive spent less than £500 all in inc purchase. Its just a car to drive while I fix up my e30 really.

Its not a long term car, its just some fun for right now as I havent owned a V8 before.

I have to say I do kind of agree with vincenz (apart from the 'buy the E60 M5' part)... I thought this car was just a shed for you to practice spraying?

Surely this is a car you should be stringing out with as little expenditure as possible until you don't need it any more and have experimented with painting on it, before scrapping it or flogging it for a couple of hundred quid.

Your car, your choice, but from experience the jobs on these at that age / condition never stop, and if you're going to be respraying that from bumper you've got your work cut out as they're an absolute bh to unclip and prep, i'm sure theres a few pesky heat stakes in it too.

Fair play to you for taking on such a project, did the auto box trick work?

So to update this, ended up still driving it as my Rnage Rovers gearbox is fine, problem is something engine related.

Still not spent a penny since the last update, it needs topped up with 1-1.5l of water weekly and that's about it other than the fuel at 8mpg. (6 mile commute to work on single track lanes with hairpin bends etc). I am going to treat it to some gearbox oil soon though, it holds 3rd gear at 70 mph for 20 seconds before changing up.

It's just clicked over 135k and 2600 in my ownership. Still has the 45-55 mph shimmy, looked into fixing it but all I could see that was loose was a worn ball joint on the tie rod bar (think that's the name, the handle bar shaped thing with 2 balljoints which the track rod ends connect too). Seems like a pain in the arse to change so it's staying.

Looking for a alpina centre cap if anyone knows where I can get just 1, it's not a real wheel so a fake cap is preferred.

One word- don't. I ended up replacing everything on my E34 to fix it.

Water consumption rose to 3l per 20 miles so something was very leaky now. Put it in the dry garage over night and found no water on the floor which was a good sign I figured.

Turned the car on and left it running to build up temp/pressure. Water started spewing sideways over the top of the drivers side wing.

Now on this car (aftermarket part maybe) it has a plastic housing on the water pump, this had split and was firing the water out. Being the fact I am refusing to spend money on this car unless 100% needed as it just needs to last for 2 weeks or so now. I used tigerseal and have coated the area in a thick coating which has solved the leak. However to do this I had to remove the air intake pipe, which I failed to tighten back on, which caused the car to not even idle.

In other news thats the car at 3k since I got it, other than the awful mpg (8, yes 8 not a typo) it has cost me pretty much fk all. Who said a E38 cant be run on a shoestring tongue out

So the car has reached the end of its life under me. Been replaced by a e46 330i touring.

Wheels are coming off to be the winters and the originals are going back on. Someone else might have some cheap fun with it, if not will break it for the few good bits which are left.

Has been a fun car to own due to the noise and I havent given two sts about any of it which has been nice after driving a Range Rover. Think in total I am in the car for under £600 excluding the fuel.

I already miss the noise.... I need another V8 in my life.
