Glad you & P5B found this interesting, a friend in Oz sent the link to me some time ago. Here's another:

I would love to see that photo !
Now I think of it, the cars 'Passport' had May Gurney written on the front.

When I first saw the car she was in an unloved, neglected but saveable state and I returned home to mull it over. Those mullings turned into restlessness which turned into anxiousness then panic as overnight I managed to convince myself that I was going to miss out, so I set off at first light having had very little sleep to do the deal.
There was no MOT and the seller was being vague but I pressed on and drove it home.
It needed an exhaust and a repair to one of the tanks but that was it.

I noticed that one of the wings had been badly resprayed and the paint was flaking slightly.
Using a combination of rubbing compound and 3000 grit wet and dry I was able to remove the top layer to reveal the original paint beneath !
It took me a week of evenings to discover to my deep joy that the culprit had blown over the whole wing in a similar shade without keying the original surface or using primer - all for a two-inch scratch !
Once I'd effected a local smart repair, I had the enthusiasm to machine polish the entire car, remove, restore and refit the chrome, detail the engine bay and restore the interior.
Of all the cars I've owned THIS is the one I will track down and buy again someday.
Sold it to a property millionaire from Liverpool who turned up in a Bentley Continental.
It should have been pretty solid. I would have thought you could count on the fingers of your hands the number of times it sat out overnight whilst Paul and Winnie had it and it never wanted for anything maintenance wise. Paul was a very good driver and Winnie's chauffeur was a steady old chap, so it would never have had any dings or scrapes in their time.

I'm trying to remember the story about the colour scheme. I'm pretty sure that they didn't order it that colour but it was a one off. I'll ask my father the next time I speak to him and see if he remembers.

Did it still have the aftermarket Alpinair air con system when you had it?
Oh, it was clearly fastidiously maintained and was as smooth as silk in every respect.
It did have the Air Con system fitted and had I have kept it was the next (and only) job to be investigated.....

I am loving all these pics and anecdotes. Please keep them coming!

As for what I do with MOTs, tax and so on, it's a pain, but somehow it gets done. I have all the old heaps on a very cheap group policy with the excellent Classic Line Insurance. The 2002 Bimmer is on a boggo policy with Chaucer. I need a big shed to put the sheds in.

I want to get both fuel tanks, fuel gauge and rev counter working. The heater - meh. I am thinking of refitting a refurbed AED and seeing how it goes. Opinions as to the AED vary, I gather. Some say that it is the work of Beelzebub and some saying that it is OK if set up correctly.

I'm loving this thread, My old Dad had several XJ'S from 69 through to 77, building up to a XJ12L which was the most unreliable thing in history. Love the series one cars, RNE 5J was the car I have the fondest memories of. Back in those times I.C.I had XJ's as management cars and the carpark at Blackley in Manchester was full of them, 2.8's and 4.2's.
I keep thinking about acquiring a nice 4.2, it might be an itch to scratch this year.
So, the thread puts me on a mission and I find this...... http://www.angliacarauctions.co.uk/en/classic-auct...

The AED on mine was working beautifully last year, I did a 300 mile round trip one day last October (including heavy traffic in the Smoke) with no agro whatsoever, but since then it's been playing silly beggars. Pumped up by this thread I tried starting it this morning to no avail! At least the old barge is tucked up in the dry for now.

On a more cheery note, another shameless dollop of nostalgia...

'Sweeney 2', shot in '77...

'The Protectors', 1972...

'The Persuaders', 1971...

'Minder', 1979...

Random stuff...

NEC 2012...

Sir Bill himself with the new model in '68, of all the cars he produced the XJ was the one he was proudest of...

My heap, when it runs...

The clock works but it's very loud, the radio emits a nice warm fuzzy tone and the heater / blower works a treat... haven't tried the fuel tank switchover yet...

Overdrive works very nicely, as do the 'leckie windows although they're a bit slow...

Bearing in mind that it was her personal car that she drove herself, I'm surprised it's even as much as that. I guess a lot of that mileage would have been getting it to wherever she wanted to use it

This thread is redolent of car coats, stringbacks, shirts with unfeasibly large collars and trousers that are inappropriately tight. It ought to appear on screen as though viewed through a tobacco tint.

Love it! Can't believe how small it looks next to that Jazz though - for what was, in its day, a large premium exec!
Good spot, it looks fairly modest by comparison. Great purchase Mr BV, I love the timeless look of these bargomatics and doesn't it look great in that car park in a sea of boring Euroboxes. Updates awaited smile

Top job P5BNij. Interesting that Jaguar let the press loose on a 2.8 auto (MWK 28G) Perhaps they arent that bad after all!

Wonder how the 2.8/4.2 steel wheels got on it, V12's had the more vented steels as fitted to the S2.

Ah yes, I fear I may have let the side down somewhat, I'm I afraid forgot to filter my contributions through the following advert / time portal widget-thingumies...

Reckon I should stop right there and get back to posting some tasty Jaaaags and Daimlers...

This one will do me, love the colour, the vinyl roof and Kent alloys...

These two Daimler Coupes belong to the blokes who fettled my car last year, the Squadron Blue one is a V12...

P5B, that's a great collection pics...especially the last two of the gorgeous Daimler Coupe.

Right you lot, stop it! And that includes you, BV72. Have just wasted a whole evening wafting through the online ads looking at XJ6's, Daimlers and 2 door Coupes. I grew up with XJ6's during the 1970's and early 1980's, they were a family favourite. Have fond memories of motoring along with Abba and Queen being played on the 8track...and now I find myself wanting one, to the extent have called my mother this evening asking her to scan and email pics of the one that sticks in my mind. It was a 1976 4.2 XJ6 with vinyl roof. Haven't a clue of the reg# but would be fun to see if it still exists. Talks to self, "Don't buy another car", "Yes, buy an XJ6C", "Don't buy another car", "Yes, buy a 4.2 Daimler..." You lot are going to get me in to trouble...
