1975 Jaguar XJ Coupe 6.0 V12
Discussion
There are far more knowledgable old Jag people around than I, in particular I would commend PH member lowdrag who can be found over on the Classics forum, but this is my take on the general 4.2 XK situation
Most Jaguar bhp figures in the carb era were exaggerated in comparison to modern numbers in two ways -
1. early numbers were SAE Gross rather than DIN Net, and
2. a lot of them were just exaggerated regardless of what system was in use.
A twin-carb Series 1 4.2 XJ6 was claimed at 245 bhp SAE Gross. Real flywheel power in today's money is more like about 170-180 hp.
A triple-carb E-Type engine was claimed at 265 bhp SAE Gross, for both the 3.8 and the 4.2, the 4.2 being lower-revving. Real flywheel power DIN Net was perhaps more like about 190-200 hp. Given that the early two seaters had a fuelled kerb weight of about 1200 kg this seems roughly consistent with their performance which was generally timed at about 17.5 secs 0-100.
Autocar tested an 18,000 mile second-hand car, not a factory road test prepared car, in 1968 and only got 0-100 in 24.4 out of it, which suggests thet fell out of tune pretty readily.
Obviously racers had more, and it is well accepted these days that the early E-Type road test cars did not have standard engines.
Federal spec cars were a lot less power than UK/Euro spec.

The power outputs were a finger in the air in those days and approximated for bragging rights more than anything.
There is a guy on the XJC facebook page that claims to have built the fastest (400bhp chevy crate so not the fastest) and the safest XJC ever by basically cannibalising a late XJS. He has fitted the airbag steering wheel and somehow thinks the airbag will work!

He's JUST fitted the bag wheel? Nothing else? What's he plugged it into...?TooMany2cvs said:

Evening, I've been browsing this build for a while, I've always loved the XJ coupe.
Ref the XJS airbags they are all self contained mechanically triggered, so it might work. If you take the whole column and wheel out in one go the bag will still be armed so don't drop it...
Yeah i looked into it and discovered that. Still no idea why you would fit a 25 year old airbag to the car. You gain an ugly steering wheel and the possibility the airbag will do anything useful rather than harm is rather slim.Ref the XJS airbags they are all self contained mechanically triggered, so it might work. OK back on track. I have decided that I am going to go for the BBS-RS type wheels that I liked at the outset now I have decided I dont like the Halibrands.
Harry at Image wheels has said that you can paint the centre nut cover the same colour as the spokes and they can engineer the wheels to take a centre badge where the image wheels logo currently is.
So. Based on the pictures below can someone do the following for me in Photoshop please -
Paint the spokes and centre of the wheel in black as per the Arden XJC (if possible leaving the split rim bolts silver)
put a red Jaguar growler in the centre in place of the image logo
Thanks

Why don't you fit real bbs rc wheels?
Because they dont make them anymore in sizes under 17 inches. Not to mention they are over 4 grand a setEdited by RobXjcoupe on Thursday 2nd March 18:23
