Indeed. White cars are for the police or those horrible wedding cars.

White is a good neutral to show off interior colours. Sometimes you need to look further than a stereotypical view.
Motorsport use white a lot and also white used to be an export colour only for the hotter climate countries, when air con wasn't fitted to all and sundry.
Silver is a good shade to show off the chrome and seems to be rare in original chrome bumpered classics. Although silver is also a shade police cars use lol
I think a silver swb series 2 xj 4 door with ox blood red interior, sat low on a set of polished rim 18" wheels would look perfect. Detailed mods of xjs rear outboard disc brakes with a nice stainless exhaust system to give a low burble sound on tick over is all that's really needed for a fabulous cruiser and slightly modded show car smile

On a similar note, earlier I saw two very threadbare maroon XJs being trailered away from Exeter. They looked like you wouldn't get one good car from the pair but hopefully they'll yield some useful parts for someone.

If you're looking at option 5, take a look at the e-rod package from Chevy. Its what I bought (6.2, 430HP) and it comes pretty much plug and play. All the other bits like belt drive/ pulleys, etc. can come from chevy too. I bought the engine and gearbox (TR6060) as one package but it also comes in automatic configuration.

The LS swaps are so common now that it leaves me cold really. V12 definitely.

There is very little chance of it going LS3. It will go four speed and I would LPG it before I ripped out the engine. There is something majestic about a v12

OK back on topic I need help describing what I am looking for to Google to find a supplier.

The car is in the painting stages so the next stage is to do all the external chrome so that it matches the new bling grille. In doing this I will be making the rear bumper into a one piece and removing the over-riders both front and back for a smoother look and easier access to the series 3 lights at the rear.

OK so here is my question. I am rechroming the tread plates in the doors and currently they are etched like this -

https://media.merchantcircle.com/5121004/Sandblast...

When I have them redone I want to have a design etched onto them in the same way but I want it to be coloured. I want the design to be in black to match the car and stand out against the chrome but I dont know what process I am describing to be able to search for it. I know I could achieve it with a transparent sticker on each of them but I want this to be top notch.

Help!

Would that be "relief printing" or some such term? Where the design is etched/pressed into the metal and then painted/coloured separately?

no bob-lad what I mean is say having the whole strip chromed and then text like JAGUAR XJ COUPE 6.0 V12 in big black letters etched into the length of the tread plate and then the etching filed with black paint so what you end up with is a chrome strip with black lettering really standing out.

Like this but on a grand scale

That's more of a paint filled shaped hole than etching. You'd need rather substantial tread plates for that.

I wonder whether you could get the effect you're after with spray chrome. Building up the layers of different colours to provide the shine and the text. Might be worth talking to a shop that does spray chrome.

idea

Isn't that polished aluminium? Couldn't you get lovely hunking aluminium tread plate shape down to your local quality engraver / CNC machine, cut the text in, daub with black paint and have your man with the ally mop bring it up to a fine finish ?

I suppose paint filled engraving may be a better term. Yes I think that is it

You could possibly try laser etching which actually colours the metal rather than cutting it. You will need stainless steel but I'm not sure black would be possible.
As mentioned above, if you cnc machine you need a fair thickness to machine to a depth to fill with paint or resin.
Below are pictures of metal coated black plastic. Cut through the shine and leaves black for the script. Used for office door signs etc

The tread plates might actually already be stainless steel? just thinking aloud? If they are then could use them as a template for new ones and then do as you suggest. I am thinking of text saying something like -

1975 Jaguar XJ Coupe

or something like that, preferably in the Jaguar script.

I am then considering having a smaller plate inside somewhere like on the centre console that marks the build date and location and the final finishing date of the re-imagining project.

Pretty sure what you want can be achieved with a pulsed fiber laser like this:

http://www.spilasers.com/application-engraving/eng...

It's a deep engrave with a black mark; not paint so will never come off.

Yeah that kind of thing but I want it to be smooth when you run your hand over it. Any kind of indentation that isnt filled will start to fill up with dirt

Ah well in that case you either need to fill the engrave with an epoxy of some sort (and coat the whole piece) or you just go with a light 'mark'; something like this:

I know, I know, terribly vulgar and a bit 70s but ....

Yes it's awfully inappropriate for the finish of your car, but the last 10 seconds do sound rather fantastic.
