Thanks Craig, great link... not surprised to read that it could so easily have been crushed!
I saw an advert on e bay for a prototype coupe. Will see if it's still on there.

Yeah that one is an engine mule whereas the red one in Aus is the original saloon car hacked about to make the first ever coupe. Can't imagine how slow the 3.4 would have been if they had made it!

When I read the Aussie site I understood the real story. Both cars of historical interest. Funny that the original is hidden somewhere. Wonder what would happen if it appeared somewhere. Or does it not technically exist ? Would jaguar want it crushed? Many questions.

Colour wise - how about the Lotus Carlton as inspiration? Imperial green was it? Very, very dark green it was almost black. Or perhaps the same idea but with a very, very dark blue instead?
Definitely take some consideration to this. Great colour. Very classy.

Question for the tyre boys who might read this...

The car currently wears 235/55r17 all round. If I go down to 16 inch wheels to get a set of Dunlops what tyre size do I need to maintain the same tyre height so that they fill the arches as much as the current 17s do? Oh yea... and be able to buy tyres with a decent speed rating on them.

Cheers

OK decisions made to this point -

Paint - Mercedes Obsidian Black with no vinyl roof and no leaper
Renew chrome all round and fit front over riders on the rear bumper
New leather interior in red with red seats and door cards, black carpets, black upper doors, dashboard and centre console
Piano black wood and matching piano black steering wheel

235/55 17 has 55% of 235mm as nominal sidewall height - 129.25mm
Add half an inch - 12.7mm - to that. 141.95
That's pretty much exactly 60% of 235mm. Not a great choice - http://www.camskill.co.uk/m62b0s425p0/
It's a bit shorter than 225/65 - which don't seem to exist.
So a bit taller than 225/60 - http://www.camskill.co.uk/m62b0s424p0/ plus Merc/Audi OE-spec choices. Mich Prim3 W-rated (168mph) for just under a ton a corner? W-rated Conti PremiumContact2 for just over £90? Could be a lot worse.

My engine isn't running right. All of a sudden it's started stalling rather than idling although when it's on the move it runs fine Along the motorway at whatever speed you want. What could cause that? Starting to annoy me now because been for a long drive today but as soon as you're off the motorway I've had to really anticipate islands etc so that I don't have to come to a complete stop to prevent it stalling.

Help please

Craig I had the same problem on a v12 XJS back in the 80's. I'm afraid the details are a little hazy now but I do recall it was an issue with the throttle bodies being gunked up inside. We cleaned them out & there was some fiddly adjustment involving the throttle 'discs' & the connecting linkage / rods.

I'm sorry I can't be more specific, the problem was diagnosed by an experienced Jag engineer & the engine idled a treat afterwards.

I hope this helps mate, good luck!

Might be that. Will check it out just collecting ideas at the moment. It has modified throttle bodies on it

OK I think I might have solved my running issue but need the RAC back out to confirm. When they came out they messed around with the throttle bodies to get it to idle and not stall although the idle was shaky. Clearing out the boot yesterday ready to take the car to XJ restorations I noticed that the vacuum hose had come off the ECU! re-attached it and the car starts first time and runs but it idles at a surging 1500-1800rpm which drops to 1000 when in reverse or drive. Im going to get the RAC to reverse the adjustment they did of the throttle body and see if that works before taking it into the shop.

Sounds like you're very close to getting it sorted, I guess the RAC have made adjustments which compensated for the lack of vacuum, like you say a reversal should hopefully cure it. Thank Christ you spotted the loose hose before the whole bloody issue got stripped down!

I hope so. The board covering the ECU has been off for a while when XJ restorations were trying to sort the issues with the water in the fuel and it would appear the problems started after i gave someone a lift to the station and they stuffed their huge suit cases to the back of the boot for everything to fit which probably pulled off the vac hose. If the RAC can lower the revs through messing with the throttle body to put it back to where it was and maybe mess with the idle control valve I will be a happy boy.

Great stuff. Will you be calling into XJ Restorations & updating us on the progress or are we to be kept in suspenders? biggrin

Well the RAC have been out and adjusted the throttle body back and the beast lives and its quieter than ever before!! its now idling at 700rpm and no longer drinking fuel like Oliver Reed on the test run. It no longer feels hesitant at all which is probably due to it being back on the AJ6 ECU rather than the test Lucas ECU we were using to flush out the previous problem. Its not 100% though but its pretty much there. Good week for it to be sorted because its not a good week for XJ Restorations.

this is the problem with all Jags now and again you go out and have a drive in them that just grabs you.
I have been thinking of selling my XKR for sometime now but just an hour in it and I am thinking will I ever get a better one.

There's a nice story on Petrolicious today about a XJ6-C, may be of interest to some here: http://petrolicious.com/this-1975-jaguar-xj-c-is-o...
