At least the roof isnt three tonnes of filler hehe

They've masked the door handle up, rather than remove it?

Presumably to protect the handles from the paint stripper.

With those beauties in the background, I think this project is in safe hands.

Keep up the good work smile

Thank you. It's at that nerve wracking phase where being back to bare metal everything that needs to be done can be seen so this is where the budget starts to move!

Cheers. I only need a couple of bits and unfortunately they are bits that are unique to the coupe

Will be interested to see what you think of XJ Restorations work, I'll need a wheel arch on the Daimler at some point.

OK so so far -

car stripped out interior wise, remove vinyl roof, leaper etc

body stripped back to bare metal and panels removed to check for structural issues

having stripped the bodywork back identified that the rear wheel arch modifications which a previous owner paid £3000 for were basically done with filler and fibreglass. I feel like I should really name and shame the business that did it!

Also noticed some corrosion of the structure which is being addressed mainly behind the front wings which is the cause of water ingress into the footwells

Biggest issue identified is that the car had new sills in 1995 and some eejit thought that stuffing them full of metal girder (which is date stamped which is how we know it was 1995) would somehow strengthen them and make the vehicle stiffer i guess. Obviously this is not the case but the metal girder used has basically rotted so its rotted the sills from inside out so new sills required.

This will all be done by the end of the month and then its time to prep the body for the painting process and hopefully by the end of August it will be shiny Obsidian Black and then we can get on with doing the exterior chrome etc so that the exterior is as I want it (minus the wheels) and that will be the end of phase one.

Phase two will then be to update the equipment as stated earlier and phase three the interior trimming and detailing and finally the wheels

So far we are five grand over budget due to the unforseen issues but that doesnt concern me yet

£5k over budget and not concerned!! Good lad, it's not really about the money on a project like this - well you had better keep telling yourself that anyway ;-)

This is why you only do something like this once and have to really have your man maths in order haha

Mind you, it was at this stage that any hidden costs would be highlighted so it should be fine from here but may have to extend the project to get everything done so wheels etc can wait a bit.

Thanks for the update and I am so glad work is progressing. I know the £5K overspend must be hard to swallow, but this will be an epic car eventually and it will seem worth it.

Keep us posted .... best car on PH IMO!
