Yeah it will start to feel like its turning in the right direction after that.
will be interesting to see the modern lighting in. Should make it much more drivable in the dark and really kick off the modernisation.

I now have a dateless registration for it from the latest DVLA auction. Was good value and worth at least twice what I paid if I sell it.

I want to run it on black and silver plates but which style?

Acrylic with smooth letters and maybe a silver border
Embossed flat aluminium pressing
Plastic raised silver letters riveted into metal plate

I'm not sure.... what do you guys think?

For me black/silver plates would have to be embossed metal.

I don't think embossed / pressed alloy plates would suit the XJC, engraved / mirrorline black & silver or raised digit plates would look much better... make sure you order a full sized one for the rear!

Those plates look far better when the silver actually follows the lines of the letter, rather than just straight silver lines, if you know what I mean.

Had the engraved type on my last P6B... much nicer looking...

I like the engraved type that Alan L has posted. They will be alone on the back with no badges, trims of anything.

How do you think they will sit looks wise with the series 3 lights that will be solid red?

P5...... I have seen some cars with the bigger plates, do you know the dimensions or where I can find out?

I think they'll sit fine on your car craig, you said you've got an ageless number so presumably it's a fairly short one, in which case it will look damned good on the back of a modified XJ. Can't remember the dimensions off hand for the enlarged rear plate but some of the makers will already have the template for it so they should know exactly what you want. I bought a set of engraved ones for my last P5B as well which has a much larger plate on the back, had it made up no problem. On my recently sold S2 XJ I bought a set of black digit on white / yellow reflective plates from The Numberplate Centre in Brum and they supplied the correct large rear plate for it, I'm pretty sure they do the black and silver engraved type too. They often have their trailer at car shows, Stoneleigh, NEC etc.

Yeah the number is 429 PUW I will look up the bigger rear. I like that engraved version that follows the letters.

Final decision made about colour too. Its going to be Mercedes Obsidian Black. I couldn't find a purple that looked quite right in the application after we sprayed a few scrap body parts in various hues.

So the idea now is menacing look black with black and silver plates and the black wheels posted earlier and lowered a further 20mm from where it sits now. the image of an impeccably dressed gentleman who, if you look at him the wrong way will cross the road and end you haha

Just remembered Craig - I've still got one of the original rear plates from my XJ in the garage, I'll dig it out and measure it up....

Edit : I fully applaud your gentleman hooligan ethos!

''The menacing quality of our superior product attached to your gentleman's hooligan mobile will be remembered long after the price is forgotten...''! The set I bought for the P5B looked fantastic on the car so the expense is well worth it.

Can't find that pesky rear plate, it must be hiding somewhere under a pile of rubbish.

More 'rounded' typeface on these but they do look the part...

If it's of any help.

Rear plate on a Bentley, like the one a few posts back is 20'x8' iirc Jaguar has rounded corners at top or bottom.

OK next question....

I am thinking of coating the chrome that surrounds all the windows so that I can paint it in the same colour as the car. The idea being that it will lower the visual look of roof if the chrome starts with the door mirrors downwards rather them emphasising the roof with the current chrome round the windscreens and side window trim.

What do you think? has anyone got any experience of painting chrome? was it successful?

It is. I used to wonder when I was washing my old XJC whether that was possibly one of the longest single lengths of metal on any car. laugh
