Sorry to see the MOT Fail, I thought that was meant to be a rust free example a few pages back, apparently not!

MOT fail aside, so many toys for little money!

Surely that MOT failure is for the MX5? The Merc seemed to be in a lot better condition and I am sure it only recently passed its MOT.

Not sure an MX5 would have an "offside" catalytic converter - surely no need to clarify where the single car would be on an MX5.

I'd be tempted to get a price on welding it up and sticking a cat on it, surely can't be overly expensive?

EDIT - Pair of used cats on the bay for £80 plus delivery. Suspension bush is circa £20. So if the welding isn't too bad then it is well worth saving!

The thing is the bodywork in general isn't all that good with regard to rust, all 4 doors and arches need attention. My mechanic, who enjoys keeping my snotters on the road, shook his head at this one. As they are not allowed to take off covers, he said there would definitely be other horrors (he's owned two W220's) Also 3 rusty suspension turrets, and with the Air susp, that's a big cost when it goes. I'll dig around it properly and post some photos. smile

Ah!

So.... A barge is not just for Christmas

But a shed-barge might be just around 'til Christmas

I think we can see how it works now....

If as the previous owner had stated the car was mot'd until Feb 2017 what made you re-mot it 3 months later?? Also seems to be an awful lot of mot faults have appeared in those 3 months.

The eBay advert stated that the MOT ran out in June. Think this is the reality of living the barge dream and the reason the lease thread on here is so long.

The mot was a typo, it's got a year on it now as the guy mot'd it yesterday, it had 5 months on it anyway til July 2016 prior to that.
confused What happened to that, then?

I think there's certainly an argument here for owning barges of a slightly more mature vintage - they might be a little more ropey, but less gadgetry (ie air suspension) to go wrong hopefully means they're a little cheaper to repair. I rather fancy an e34 or e39 touring.

Absolutely. It appears that the OP dodged (knowingly?) a fairly big bullet here, and shunted on a pup before it bit him.

I'd suggest that this is a nice dose of reality, as a counterpoint to the OTT fawning that went on in the previous pages. Chronic, MOT-failing, structural rot doesn't appear in less than a year, so there's a good chance that there have been signs of this for a while.

Bargain 'luxury' barging might be the latest PH fashion (it looks like the MX5 has fallen out of favour), but PHers seem all too ready to gloss over situations like this. An honest appraisal of the car's original condition would probably have left this thread at 1-2pgs at most - but then, where's the fun in that?

Indeed, no fun at all in not taking a punt.

I took one, it went wrong and I'm not that out of pocket.

Certainly an adventure, and if I can get the locking wheelnut off tonight I have 2 weeks of S class fun...

How much to rent a 2.0 TDI Vauxhall for 2 weeks? £500?

I think you have just had a very harsh MOT tester based on the previous MOT's

No advisories on the last MOT and 4 failures + 7 advisories on the current one after 5k miles? Did you go to Halfords for an MOT?

Or, the previous owner had a very 'friendly' MOT tester...

I'm not sure my chap is being all that harsh..here the inner wing, has a hole through it

Can that happen in a year?
Am i right in thinking that to replace that it is almost an engine out job?

Here's some of the Rusty edges.

It's on ebay now, wish me luck!

I bought a locking wheelnut remover, but ran out of time to try and make it work so i can put the spare on..maybe tomorrow.

My wife has been telling our girls about how great the car is. After 200 miles driving in p1ssing rain from Leeds, she's a convert to barging too. RESULT.

I am tempted to buy a Merc "D" wheelnut remover, but someone has attacked the inner bit of it with a drill, which caused failure, which leads me to believe that was the wrong one in the first place.. As I have no V5 yet,so MB stealership will flip me the V's any suggestions how I can get the spare on the cords showing rear???

See I just don't know why anyone would drill like this if it was the right one?
