Now the slightly upsetting news if I'd have seen this I would have had it off you for more than £385

So you bought the car, gave it an mot early and by what seems like a slightly strict tester. Then you didn't get a second opinion on repairing it, but you did eBay it poorly and got a low price. Then you let some bloke give you an awful ring as part payment.....

Good luck with the auction, and perhaps learn from this one. :-)

Hilarious eBay photos though!

Brilliant! Properly laughed out loud a few times. This should appear in the dos and donts section of buying/selling a car in any car site. Someone somewhere is getting it in the neck from their Mrs wearing a MUM necklace for having pawned their ring.

This thread deserves a resurrection - gave me a great 15 minutes break from my desk jockey job.

For what it's worth regarding rust on 1999-2002 W220 S-Class, if the vehicle was serviced at Mercedes dealers from new the bodywork was under warranty from rust. My Dad had bought a Silver/Blue S500 in Berlin in 2000 and by 2003 the rust was showing so Mercedes fully resprayed the car at a cost of around 15,000EUR.

There may be another 900GBP early S500 waiting in the wings for some guy to take a punt on.

Whilst very entertaining, interesting and caveat emptor and all that.......its horrific that a 15 year old prestige car ends up as virtually rusty scrap metal way before its time.

Built in obselescence and all that I suppose.

So what about all the protection techniques and methods of prevention, not impressed that Mercedes just don't care, not does it seem the market take any notice, everything just gets recycled!

PS I currently have 3 Mercs, all pre 1996 though......smile....!

It is a possible contender for the most rusty W220 known to man - Why on earth would you want it back!?

hehehehehehehehe

I cracked at the part where he offered the rings !!!! Hahahahahahah that is crazy, wonder if the ring was stolen off a loving dad or if the dad left the family for another woman, wait, those dad rings, who is supposed to wear them! TBH if I was Steve I would have bought the ring and kept it, pass it on to his son, 2 generations later, a grand child asks what the ring is about ' well James, it all started off with your grandfathers lease ending and him seeing an s500 on Facebook' hehehehe

Would be worth 385 to help Ben get the money he was promised for the car and to be able to tell that story when someoebody asks why there is a gold dad ring inside a 3D clear box in the livingroom above the fireplace hehe

Just been reminded of this thread thanks to a similarly dodgy S500 posted elsewhere, have had a good laugh re-reading some of it

As to the fate of my Ring?

So one lunchtime I left Canary Wharf and went for a walk...a fairly long walk, literally over the wrong side of the tracks...to find this place..

And the results...about enough to keep me in Lunches for a week or two.

£155 all in. Nice.
I just checked the MOT history of the car...it still has no MOT, so whether the Gypo is smoking around Essex in it or has used it for banger racing I have no idea.
