Nice spot... Lol.

Anyway, the Rascal is now an award winner, in a real, legitimate competition where people had to vote on their choice of car.

I was at the big VBOA show this weekend along with my club, it's probably the biggest vauxhall/bedford/Opel show in the country after PVS but brings together many many owners of all sorts of different Vauxhalls from the oldest to the newest.

Every club enters one vehicle into the Chairman's Cup, and then everyone visiting the show has the opportunity to vote on their favourite. There are 3 categories - Best Pre-1990 vehicle, best post-1990 vehicle and best Standard vehicle (as the other categories winners can be modified as many vauxhall owners choose to do)

The van won Best Standard Vehicle! I am chuffed. I was really surprised, I was up against some stiff competition including a very tidy 1950- something vauxhall velox, a 1960s 3 ton truck that was almost factory fresh and some others.

But I won, and soon I will receive a proper trophy to show for it as well! And also soon hopefully I'll have some other pics to put up

Nothing really changed with this.

Last week I had two of the tyres replaced, at the enormous cost of £22 each + fitting!! 12" commercial tyres but not needed to be rated for high speed clearly a bonus.

And then on Saturday, I was mighty surprised when the little van passed its MOT without even an advisory to worry about. The tester, who had had a chuckle as I pulled up in it and stepped out, remarked how surprised he was at that as well.

So, pretty happy with that. I then used it to transport some wood from Homebase back home. But that wasn't worthy of a photo. Sorry.

Next up - I'll get a service kit and then give it a bit of an "italian tune up" to try and cure the rough running it has at low revs.

Annoying update - head gasket failure. Overheated but thanks to a dicky gauge, I didn't notice this until the smoke filled the cabin.

That was in November, just at the beginning of winter, and so for the last three and a half months it has sat outside my house waiting to have the repair work done.

Winter and work rather prevented me having the time for this, and then I was mucked around for three weeks by a mechanic who came well recommended to me but in the end just cut off contact - why not just be up front about it and say "It's not really a job I'm looking to take on" which was exactly what my regular garage said to me, they don't focus much on older cars.

A friend then chirped up offering to get the work done for me, and he came up at the weekend with his trailer to pick the van up. Not sure his trailer was needed to carry something this small



Didn't even push the nose of the trailer down onto the tow hitch very much!

once that is back I hope to start using it again for fun. However, the next annoyance was that the headlining has fallen down in the back, will have to decide whether or not to repair or remove it.

These are very rare in the USA, I saw one abandoned in a motor pool and a few weeks ago one the side of the road. I believe they were sold as daihatsu.

They would be good for hunting as they are narrow enough to fit on trails and beats dragging a buck through the woods to a regular sized truck.

This is the Suzuki based variant, but I'm pretty sure that the Subaru/Honda/Daihatsu/Toyota variants are pretty much all the same. Built on the "kei car" principle of the Japanese, fitting within a small footprint attracted lower taxation. But here in the UK they were fitted with a 970cc engine so it keeps up with UK traffic rather better than the 550/660s that Japan had.

It would, I expect, fit in the back of your Starcraft pretty much wink

I am considering building a frame to fit a removable bad into the back of it, could cosy up in there with the wife but I'd never get myself laid out completely flat. but for one night, it could work maybe! Got to be worth a go I reckon, raise it high enough above the rear wheel arches which would also be a storage space, fit a mattress and all is good.

with a whopping 44bhp its pretty good.. and as it only weighs about 750kgs its also quite spritely away from the lights.

Finally, my Trophy arrived from winning the Organiser's Cup at the 2016 VBOA National Rally.



It didn't win the overall Best in Show "Chairmans Cup" but it did win the popular vote for Best Standard Vehicle and that gets this lovely shiny trophy.

Small update (appropriate for a small van!)

Managed to track down all the parts needed to get this going on, thanks to the wonderful world of eBay.

New timing belt, new water pump, new HT leads and new head gasket and seals. Total cost was just under £110 including all postage. My mate who is doing the work couldn't get hold of the bits from his local motor factor, nor the local Vauxhall or Suzuki dealers. Thankfully there are still some out there who have the bits!

This should mean the van is back in action in the next couple of weeks. Then the only issue will be getting the headlining sorted as this had started to sag. If it is salvageable that will be my preferred option but then it is 27 years old now so will have to see what it looks like underneath!

Why thank you.

To me I certainly think it has "character" compared to many of the other cars I have driven over the years, and to you as well. It might not to other observers. I am too young to know whether this will have had character when it was brand new, however.

It is easy to fall into the trap that any old-fashioned car driven on the roads in today's world has character because you have to use a manual choke, and manual windows to get it going, and keep an eye on the temperature gauge, and in winter, make sure you flip the little lever underneath it to "winter" mode to circulate warm air from the exhaust port around to keep the carburetor warm! None of which you have to do on anything today where it all has sensors etc.

when I do drive it along though, it does get more admiring glances than my Skoda, that's for sure.

Pre-weekend update:

All the parts have arrived.

My mate has collected the head having had it skimmed down.

This is not a very large head at all..



On Sunday, we rebuild it. I have enough faith to only buy a one-way train ticket on a day when Southern Rail are likely to be running minimal service...

It is a Sunday, so Jesus will be on my side, right? I know he was a carpenter but I'm sure there is a transferable skill set there that he would be practically minded to be able to lend a hand doing some spannering.

Finally yesterday my mate and I got together to tackle the head gasket.

What a ballache of a job this is to do on the van, given its such a small engine, it should be easy. But the issue lies with the access!

However, we have this space:

But finally, it ran.

the timing was a complete bh to do, and the only benefit of the crappy access is that you can do it all from inside without having to run around to try and start it and then fiddle with the distributor cap, it is all within arms reach.

We also put on a new timing belt, new waterpump and a new set of HT leads.

Eventually, I made it home. It isn't fast, but I did the 50-odd miles back from Portsmouth in around 1h30 and now it sits lurking on my driveway ready for action... ish.




Next job will be to get a new radiator and some new hoses as the old radiator shows signs of a leak. However, I went outside this morning and the water level is still full which is encouraging.

Next small job will be giving it a damn good clean next week I expect, having sat unused for a while in my mates workshop it needs a bit of a tidy up.

And the reason why it broke down... dislodged king lead. Nice quick fix at least!

Another year, and it was MoT time over the weekend for the mighty Rascal.

The van has only done around 600 miles since last year, but in that time, it has had some work done. New head gasket, timing chain, waterpump, HT leads and spark plugs as well as a full decent service. The head gasket went about a week after the last MoT, which was annoying.

However, for the second year in a row, it came through the MoT without any advisory issues! The only issue that the tester made me deal with was the large spider that was residing on the underside, which he refused to touch. There apparently isn't a code for that on the MoT test machine for them to worry about.

The little Rascal hadn't run since December, and I hadn't had a chance to look at it or play with it at all over the winter or early spring what with having a baby to look after.

Last time I tried it, it spluttered and didn't really do much at all and just spluttered away. But, with a minimal amount of effort, such as charging the battery, and a few squirts of carb cleaner into the air intake, it fired up. It runs a bit rough still, but it ran and moved!

I couldn't be bothered to clean it myself though and take off 6 months worth of cobwebs and so forth, so I popped along to the local hand car wash place and let them deal with it!

I'll be getting rid of the Bilstein sticker though, as it clearly looks awful.

A modification for me to carry out in future is to fit these awesome 13" slot mag style wheels in place of the standard 12" steels. Just need to get the correct wheel nuts for this but otherwise they're a straight swap, and add nothing to my insurance premium
