Hardly negative, he was just passing an opinion, which I happen to agree with.

If it was a super rare Ferrari, Jaguar or similar maybe, but old Shadows are worth bugger all.

But as a project for a bit of interest by all means do it, but it will be a money pit.
Yes having a opinion is fine, but his name keeps on popping up on this thread offering noting but negativity, including personally attacking the OP on the collection thread. I would agree that it is not really a worthwhile project financially, but am interested to hear how he gets on.

What sort of timescale are you hoping to have it roadworthy in? Aren't you off to uni in September? I don't know about your course, but I had very little free time!

I'm just wondering why you don't finish one project before starting another?
Um, because fun?

I'll admit to having a few old snotters beyond economic repair lying around in my time - like an old mk1 Shogun with a body you could see through and another one that sat with its cylinder head off for six months for no other reason than it was an entertaining distraction for me to mess about with when I was bored of my office job, etc.

It's good to have perspective and there's no way the shadow will be repaired for pennies unless it's done so to be a 'shadow' of its former glory (chortle), the rusty Shogun owed me nothing and in the end I sold it for scrap and ended up £100 down but it seemed a fair price for whiling away a few evenings and popping my cherry on timing belt and pulley changes for the first time.

The wife buys bedding plants that die after a year for the garden, not sure she gets lambasted on mumsnet like this for having a frivolous hobby.

OP, keep going but you are officially off your tits doing this. biggrin

This place is disappointing sometimes.

Bloke buys a wrecked old Roller, shares a load of pictures for no real personal benefit, lays his efforts out and gets a bit smashed.

If he was rich and just went out and bought a brand new Ferrari he'd be getting all congratulated and slapped on the back. Instead he's gets treated like a fool.

Good on you OP, can't wait to see where this ones goes.

I have to be honest. You seem good at buying snotters and prodding them with pointy things. You then appear to rely on favours from others to actually fix stuff.

This is a serious bit of advice - stop now. You will lose money, you will ps off your family and your friends will soon get sick of fixing up your ste 'for cheap'. Especially on something as bad as that Shadow.
I have to be honest. You come across as mithering him - you don't know anything about his circumstances with his family and friends and I suspect that he already knows that it is going to cost him dearly - but, so what, it's his money and his time. He seems happy enough with the situation and the car so let him get on with it.

Your advice, though no doubt well intentioned will not be acted upon - he will have his own experiences (and quite rightly so); yes - he'll make mistakes and maybe have a few regrets, but that's how he'll learn - that's the modus operandi of a 21 year old. smile

Taking on a significant challenge and succeeding (or failing) will teach him about his limits, capabilities and his relationships with friends and family; this is one way of doing it. (Not the way I'd have chosen personally but hey, we're all different - isn't that grand?)

Body work + timing belts are things I cant do, my friends are being paid for the work they do on these bits for me. I do all the other stuff myself with help of forums/youtube for things I dont know. Maybe you dont enjoy spending time with friends working on cars but I do - as do my friends.

In regards to losing money, obviously this shadow wasnt bought with any intentions of making my money back. Its more a case of fk it im going to do something different and il have fun while learning things.
OP>Quick tip... ignore the idiots trying to obviously troll you.

Just don't reply to them, and hopefully they will fk off to annoy someone else smile

What a fantastic project, I love it!

Were it mine I'd go full hot rod and buy something else to transplant driveline from. Some Americana with a big lump, auto box and a nice simple wiring loom like an old Camaro. Be much easier to build an interior that way too - keep it simple. Not as if anyone is going to cry about a fairly common Roller that would otherwise have deteriorated beyond any usefulness.

Keep going with it OP, and keep posting up your projects. Lots of people enjoy reading them.

If you get that thing running and road legal, I'll pay for a tank of fuel for your first trip out.

My money is probably safe, but I'd be happy to pay up if you achieve it

What the fks wrong with people on this thread?

The blokes bought a tatty Shadow, to go along with a tatty E30, which are quite obviously hobby projects cars like we all should have. Whether or not they're making the most financial sense or not is up to him, as long as he's enjoying it.

I for one am quite looking forward to some updates, so can we cut the st please?
Absolutely! I bookmarked this thread a few days ago and I'm looking forward to the updates. Hope the negativity doesn't get you down, OP. Having had a restoration project going for over 8 years now I know how difficult it can sometimes be to keep the motivation level up. Best of luck with this one smile

Man has more than one mechanical project - big deal.

I've got:

Alfa GTA - shed conversion - 3/4 done
Alfa 156 - ground up rebuild - halfway done
Field Marshall Tractor - on hold
Lister SR4 air cooled diesel - on hold, trying to find parts, why did I choose the rarest engine in the world. It is going to be a 3 phase generator when it is done....
Petter PH1 air cooled diesel - making good progress in the evenings
Oh, yeah and the slating of the shed roof and the garden and the.....

I say go for it. Its not as though he is taking some priceless thing and damaging it - its proper farked already. Even if he doesn't fix it, hands up who has been googling the price of Silver Shadow restoration projects in the last few days?

I'm another one who supports Slow's crazy projects, ignore the Nay Sayers and do what you want!

Here is my own pointless, irrational project;

http://www.pistonheads.com/gassing/topic.asp?h=0&a...

A near 30 year old merc coupe that had been sat outside for 6 years at the side of the road when I "rescued" it 3 years ago.... Progress is slow but I love it !

I fully support the OP for taking this on, however, I wouldn't even dream of doing it myself.

Slow, have you ever considered a Youtube channel to document your fleet fixes? I know Project Binky is the exception rather than the rule but it's the best car related content out there at the minute.

I envy Slow as he clearly has a lot of space to store and work on old heaps, plus very patient / understanding friends and family.

Hear, Hear ! You can't knock the Mans ambition, the only hinderance I can foresee are his colossal testicles which must be tiresome to carry around.

For what it's worth, I think this is great.

Buy a stter, spend time and money on it (rather than on multiple other horrid temptations) and make something of it.

Your plans may not be to everyone's tastes but you know what Slow, your not doing it for them, it's for you.

I sir, applaud you for this. Every project is different, some require more work than others but ALL project cars are a labour of love, for the sake of doing it. That's what has drawn me to this.

Ignore what everyone else says, if you wanna do it, do it.
