My E92 335I SE
Discussion
BMW's are st.
Mileage is over 65k now, and only yesterday I was congratulating myself on such a good purchase. Pride before a fall......
So driving down the M3 this morning, dash tells me that my coolant is low, then announces the car has overheated, followed by zero power.
Immediately pulled onto the hard shoulder and turned it off.
Coolant was full and the cars oil temp display was reading normal and the engine didn't seem overly hot. Restarted the car and all was fine.
Decided not to chance it and called the AA, who read the fault codes and it came up with two for speed and voltage range for the water pump, so it would appear that the water pump is stting, has shat itself.
Got the car recovered to my local BMW specialist who are now in talks with the warranty company....am I wrong that I don't trust third part warranty companies? Hopefully I'll be proved wrong and it'll be sorted relatively painlessly.

Well, the verdict is in.
Total cost is £978, warranty company is paying £594.71, I'm coughing up the rest.
The warranty company will not pay for the diagnostic, will only pay up to £50 per hour labour, and won't pay for the thermostat that you would have to be retarded not to change while the pump is off (it hasn't failed so I was not expecting them to pay for that).
Obviously a BMW part with the warranty etc, so at least there is some peace of mind etc.
Still, older cars eh? I'm fairly relaxed about it of course as its not the end of the world, but I imagine a bill of almost a grand for a water pump would be fairly big issue for some owners.

The water pump, which is a genuine BMW part with a 2 year guarantee was £420+VAT and was paid for by the warranty company.
I'm sure someone will be able to link to a cheaper unit, but because I didn't pay for it I'm pleased to have the BMW part.
I paid for the thermostat as it seemed madness not to change it while it was apart, but that was an expensive part on its own really, £96+VAT, but again BMW with warranty etc, so I'm not expecting to have to bother with that again while I have the car.
So, another almost 1k invoice for the service history.
Brake fluid change next week, and for guidance, BMW want £70 including a valet and stamp in the book, the local indi wants £48....I'll go BMW to keep the service history all BMW main dealer.

Of course, if you have a warranty then it's BMW parts all the way. I was just posting my experience to show other E90/1/2 owners what's possible.
In my case I was about to sell the car so cheap but decent was the way to go. Still miss my E91...
No, I get that, apologies if my post came across curtly. In my case I was about to sell the car so cheap but decent was the way to go. Still miss my E91...
With regard to when they go, I'm not sure there is any rhyme or reason to it, but a search on the web suggests between 60-80k seems common.
The M135i has a later development of, possibly the single turbo N55 unit? I'm sure someone will correct me. I've driven one and was mightily impressed.
Okay bit of an update.
Got the car back from the water pumps replacement last Friday and done a few hundred miles since and all is good.
It went to BMW yesterday for the brake fluid change, which was stamp number 16 in the service history, all BMW main dealer.
It was oddly satisfying to get the condition report with all green ticks, not bad for a 10year old car!
I've fitted a few or the rarer E90/E92 options, such as this:
Sliding tray that fits to the underside of parcel shelf? I'm not sure what to call that bit but you know what I mean. It can be removed in about 10 seconds if you need more space, but is useful for keeping my PPE separate from everything else in the boot, for when I'm visiting sites.
This meant moving the amp, which now lives in the space taken by the CD changer behind the boot trim. This has had the effect of curing the intermittent dropping out of the sound from the front speakers.
The second item was an E93 first aid kit, which unlike the E90/2, sits in a little compartment fixed to the base of the passenger seat.
Apart from that...business as usual.

Run flat tyre update.....
I'd started to question my initial statement that the ride wasn't too bad, as it seemed to be getting very intolerant of almost any surface imperfection.
I was checking the tyre pressures today and decided to take them up to 2.5 bar front, 2.7 bar rear as recommended by BMW, I'd been running them far lower than this, and low and behold it has improved the ride.
It's almost as if BMW knew what they were talking about.

Bit of an update if anyone is interested.
Fitted the sole exterior modification, a boot..."lip" I suppose. I like it.
In other news, parts for operation 400 have started to arrive.
AFE stage 2 closed air induction kit is on, Forge charge pipe and blow of valve to replace the leak prone original is ordered, looking at intercoolers at the minute and will be having decatted Down pipes installed in January.

I've purchased a Cobb Acessport V3:
http://www.cobbtuning.com/products/accessport/bmw-...
which amongst the many features, including allowing me to upload maps at will to the cars ECU, also allows me to display multiple channels of live info from the cars ECU:
One of the more childish features is performance logging, which while I'm sure is not dead on accurate, is a bit of fun.
My first and only run, flooring the throttle from idle in DS mode, with traction in its normal mode produced this:

Bit of an end of 2016 update if any one is interested.
Car is running fine with no issues. I've covered around 8k since May and although the CBS is suggesting many more miles on the current oil, I'll get it booked in in January for an oil change and stick another stamp in the service history.
Operation 400 is well under way. In addition to the BMW Performance exhaust I've already fitted, I've installed an AFE stage 2 intake, and a Forge charge pipe and blow off valve to replace the standard plastic, weak version and standard, leak prone diverter valves. Apologies for the hanging engine bay:
Also fitted is a Mishimoto 5" intercooler. I chose this part as it fits without modification, most aftermarket intercoolers require trimming of the existing pipe work and inside of the front bumper. This unit uses the existing connections, allowing me to return to stock at any point.
The car is booked in on the 5th of January to have a set of VSRF 3" downpipes fitted. These remove the primary cats and a big restriction. There is another pair of cats further along which allow an MOT pass (hopefully!)
So with an upload of a stage 2 map on the Cobb Accessport, that should comfortably put me over 400bhp, perhaps around 420ish.

Thank you.
The advantage of the Cobb Accessport is that I can swap between maps at will. If I nknow that I'm just slogging up the motorway in traffic i'Il run the standard 306bhp map (which feels a bit dead now!), where as if I'm in the mood, a stage 1 map is loaded, taking the boost from 8psi to around 15psi, and yes, it feels quick running like that.
Stage 2 map in January, which should be well in excess of 400BHP!
Not bad for a shonky old 3 series.
