Problem!

Well two in a day actually.

First was some rough running and a fault code on cylinder one. Pulled the plug, checked the gap, and swapped both coil and plug with cylinder two, cleared the code and so far so good. I'll keep my eye on that.

Then, while testing that I'd fixed that, the damn thing started to feel dead, and is giving me a grand total of 1.3psi before throwing a fault code. Not great when it normally peaks at over 18psi.

Much head scratching and internet research later and I think one of the vacuum lines in the boost control system has cracked/split/perished. Two of these (there's a few) had to be replaced when it was initially remapped, so it's not unreasonable to think that there might be another hiding. I've ordered a roll of silicone vacuum pipe and will replace the lot when that arrives.

All of the other connections to charge pipes, intercooler, throttle body are all good, so the vacuum lines are an obvious place to start.

Cars eh!

Just to draw this thread to an end....the new owner collected it last week.

The potential turbo issue was solved with £3 worth of new vacuum lines to replace a perished and leaking original, a common problem on these at this age.

So, I owned it for just under a year and thoroughly enjoyed my time with the car. These are very, very underrated cars. Powerful, refined, good looking to my eyes at least, and even surprisingly fuel efficient.

Would I add reliable to that list? Hmmm, I'm not sure. If you expect a car that you can run for peanuts...I don't think one of these is the answer, but considering the car was remapped for the time I had it, and for this year had been producing 420bhp plus on a decade old motor, it's not been too bad.

If you are considering one of these, and I hope this thread has been of some assistance if you are, you need to be aware that there are a number of common N54 issues that either will have been sorted, or will need to be at some point, none of which are relatively cheap.

What's next....if only things were that easy.

In a change of direction, I decided that a sensible car was required, so a 2 year old Golf GTD was purchased.

Very happy I am too, apart from one thing. that engine. Sure it's effective, and the MPG is good, but having been spoilt with BMW 6 pots recently it just makes me wince, I'm not sure if I'll get used to it, we'll see. I'll not bother with a thread about it as I can't see it's of any interest.

The sensible choice was supposed to allow me buy something sporty, and I had lined up a 997 to buy. This has turned out to be the worst attempt at buying a car I've ever experienced. I'll not go into it on here, but let's just say the guy I was buying the car from was experiencing some issues. The upshot is no 997 arrived on my drive and the whole experience has put me off a little bit.

So, where does that leave me? Well, I think I need to scratch the V8 itch, so I'm casually looking around for something suitable which could make for a semi interesting thread.

One thing that may interest one or two of you was the drunken EBay purchase of a Fiat Panda 100hp.....

Yeah, to be fair it is.

I may have been a bit hasty with the diesel though, and perhaps the GTI may have been a better buy. Still that's hardly the cars fault.

I've just broke the news of the Panda to the wife, and despite us not needing a 10 year old Italian stbox that looks like a fridge, I can tell she was impressed.

Get pissed, go on EBay, panic when you see the "congratulations" email.

The rest will work itself out.
