Things are still great with the Mercedes at the moment.

I paid a visit to Mercedes Bridgend as i was just passing it last week and happened to mention that one of the diamond cut wheels on the '63 are suffering from minor laquer peel. They have agreed to change it under warranty this Thursday for a brand new replacement... happy days!

I have secured a new job, which involves a 60 mile round- commute every day compared to the 16 mile - round commute i previously had. It also means my trusty Seat ibiza company car goes back to my previous employer - my new employer offers a monthly car allowance instead. There was no way i was using the C63 for such commute, not because of cost, but more because it would just get ruined and the miles would rack up. I explored leasing options, but seeing as i was left with no car at the end of the term i thought id buy something half decent as a motorway slugger so i can enjoy my C63 properly out of work!

here's what £5,500 got me:

it's an E92 2007 320d M Sport with 130k on it and full history. 177bhp and 240 lb/ft torque seems to be ample for a commuter, the interior is a very nice place to be and i quite like the driving position. It has all the mod cons i need and for the money I'm over the moon with how much car ive got for it - i looked at GT TDI's (MK5's), A3 and A4 Tdi's and I'm surprised the money thier asking for considering the poor spec most have and the milage - some have been to the moon and back.

Will be interesting to see what real world MPG and miles to a tank il get from the BMW. Cant believe i've said that considering that i've never remotely considered that with the C63!

So yeh.. 25 years old and now i have two fantastic cars at my disposal, each serving a very different purpose. I really am very lucky.

Good work!

I have a Red 130i for commuting duty and keep the C63 for fun only. Always exciting to get into and always feels very fast as a result. Best way to do it in my opinion.

Thanks for the comments guys. The BM on a side note has performed effortlessly so far, and by using a diesel chugger in the week it has made me appriciate the AMG a lot more! I cant stand seeing the Merc sat there all week, so i now use it for one day a week of the commute just to keep the blood flowing (in me and the car!) and on the commute it returns a very respectable 26mpg in start stop traffic on the motorway and duals.. i'll take that. a Euro trip sounds amazing! would need some serious wedge for fuel though haha.

Forgot to update this. Nice to see a few more people have dived into AMG ownership on the forum!

As above, Mercedes Bridgend very kindly changed my rear offside wheel under warranty due to corrosion. when the car was up on the ramps, they told me both rear tyres needed changing asap. one was good to drive home, the other was..erm..

so on went the spare wheel at the dealership to get me home straight to the tyre shop the next day. Laughable on the difference between the space saver and regular 255 tyre..I had some serious looks on the M4 because i couldnt pass 50mph on the way home lol.

Fresh Continental ContactSport 6 were fitted by my trusted local tyre store, who very kindly marked both wheels in the process (see my previous thread). Long story short i will not be taking any of our cars there again and will still fight my case on getting some sort of claim for atleast a refurb.. i was going to drop it but the fact the owner has blatantly waffled his way out of it to a regular customer of the last 10+ years while taking nearly £400 a few moments before i pointed the marks out begs belief, i couldnt let that go. People always say to support local business, i always have (my fanmily are in retail) and this is how a regular customer gets treated. Anyyyywayyyyy.

After a little clean up after the gritty roads it always impresses me how clean it comes up.. banging on the layers of protection when i first had the car has worked wonders.

Just hit 14.5k miles now (bought on 11.1k miles end of July).

I literally can not even remotely think what id replace it with in a few years time.. its just so good!

I despise tyre garages whom are careless
I drove miles to get my tyres changed to a recommended garage.

The car is lovely, but it's slightly concerning that someone else had to tell you that your tyre was in that state!

Nothing to update with the AMG as such.

its still been great, just shy off 19k in it now so its near the second service schedule i believe.

It went into Mercedes Cardiff last week. There is a horrid whirring noise coming from the front drivers wheel, it sounds and feels like a wheel bearing. It also sounds like terrible road noise from the tyres? the sound 'goes around' with the wheel if that makes any sense. I advised to Mercedes that i was aware the front tyres are low on tread but they still have a lot of life left in them for now.

They kept the car overnight and concluded the following day that there was nothing mechanically out of order, and they have for now concluded it is indeed my front tyres being low on tread causing the problem - on closer inspection, they have apparently worn in a 'stepped' manor (from enthusiastic driving according to the chap in servicing!) but i fail to see how that is so from a pair of tyres that are not on the driven wheels. Regardless, i was told to get the tyres changed - if the noise goes then great, it was the tyres, if the noise remains then it is going back in ASAP. It was also in for inspection surrounding a clunk noise when steering the car at a stand still ( to get out of a space etc) which also causes a noise that resembles a tyre skipping across a loose surface, even though the steering wheel actually feels smooth when doing so. Again, they could find no fault. And in all fairness this only seems to happen in the very cold weather we had over the last few months, now its getting slightly milder in the mornings i cant say ive heard it in a while.

So, currently on the fronts are 235/35/19 Conti Contactsport 5's (OEM spec). I put Contactsport 6's on the rear a few months ago so id like to get the 6's up front too.. but for some reason there seems to be a national shortage as i cant find them anywhere!!

In other news, i sold the 320d from above which i used for work as while it was a nice car, it was not comfotable place to be on the motorway and ive decided after owning that, that manual diesels just do not work well together at all.

So i sold it for what i paid for it, and picked up its replacement last week:

Its a 530d - Seems to have a good options list, full dealer and specialist history and 120k on the clock.

its also been remapped, 270bhp and 460 odd lb ft torque - for mid gear grunt it would honestly give the AMG a good run for its money! (For a few seconds until the powerband dies off).

Its a bloody wonderful car to be honest. If your bothered, the thread for that is here http://www.pistonheads.com/gassing/topic.asp?h=0&a...

If it offers you some comfort, this is far from uncommon. I have a 2014 C63 saloon and it does the same thing in the same circumstances. I'm told it's a combination of the degree of camber when full lock is applied and low profile tyres being cold. Not sure if your a member on mb world (think you are) but there are numerous threads running about it, particularly on new C43/GLC43's. MB even issued a press release to address the matter, such was the noise level. Personally, I'm not worried about it

On the topic of your second service, are you on the service plan? I had mine in December and got three quotes ranging from £900-£1100 (needs plugs and transmission fluid), promptly signed up to pay £45 a month instead. Also, if you're on the plan and ask them nicely, you can get a 2016 gearbox map installed. Transformed mine with much faster changes and a more aggressive S+ mode.

Good luck

Fair enough - i did read several people mentioned this on MBClub but i couldnt actually see a definitive resolution. If its down to tyres and camber then it is what it is - as long as nothing mechanical is effected then so be it. Its under warranty still so i had no problem taking it back (and again) if turns out it could be something else.

Im not on a service plan, but your mentioned £45 doesnt sound like a bad deal in all honesty. I've just checked on the Mercedes Service Checker online and at 20kmiles its due an 'A' Service @ £350odd. I asssume this is simply a oil change along with air filters, i cant see brake fluid / pads / discs / gearbox oil needing any change yet.

regarding the gearbox map - i assume from your comments its worth having? are the cracks and bangs still there in S+ & M? Cant say ive actually complained about the gear changes u if its an improvement then i welcome it lol.

AMG has its first MOT on Thursday. Passed with flying colours, had to change the plates as im a naughty boy and have mis spaced them, and the two advisaries were for both front tyres which i was aware of.

Two Conti SportContact 6's are now up front replacing the 5Ps, so now im running the SportContact 6's all around. Will be interesting to see how these perform, but as with all conti's ive experienced i wont hold my breath and expect them to last longer than 9/10k max.

Recent pic of the car, and yes im aware i will upset so many people on here with my plate

Haven't updated this in a while again - more because Photobucket seems to have had a melt down with that ridiculous ransom message on my pictures.

does anyone know how to solve this?

Anyway,

Merc is still going fantastic, just touched 28k so I've owned it for 16k of its life so far over circa 18months - considering its meant to be a second car I haven't half used it!. Since my last update I've done a fair old bit:

-It had its major service at Mercedes Cardiff in the summer and is now on a service plan, which made far more sense. Infact it was a no brainer.

-It's had the secondary cats deleted by MSL Performance, Birmingham. I was very on the fence about chopping up an AMG exhaust but I'm so glad its been done - it sounds just right and is almost factory quiet when cruising. I have kept the standard cats so I may put these back in come sale time.

- OEM 19'' were buckled upfront as they sent a very small but annoying vibration through the steering wheel at motorway speed. These have now been straightened, and while I was at it I had them changed to the factory satin black and diamond cut lips. The burnt copper callipers really look great poking through an all black wheel.

-The wheel refurbishers noted my tyres were shot - so I have replaced the rears with Michelin Pilot Sport 4s after reading some great reviews. So far a bloody good tyre. Also stepped up the rears from 255 to 265 sections, just because!

-To compliment the black on black exterior l had it dechromed - Window frame, chome bar on rear bootlid , the whole front grille.inc badge, and the DRL surrounds have all been professionally wrapped by a 3M authorised wrap centre in gloss black. The black on black look suits the subtle aggressive nature of the car perfectly, I love it. It's very 'mafia' and thuggish, but the windows haven't been tinted (and wont be!) so it makes the all red interior really pop. The wrap is again reversible come resale time if required.

and that's really it! the car doesn't need anything else now, other than a new set of fronts after xmas. I did initially entertain a Eurocharged remap by MSL, but honestly, I have never driven this car wishing it had more power. I have also read conflicting views about the newest Eurocharged V7 map. The secondary cats have opened up some retained noise and its still batst quick so I think we're good as we are.

The only thing I may spend a little money on after xmas is the sound system - I'm a proper audiophile and while there was nothing wrong with the standard merc system (No HK in this and I'm glad as it was not worth the premium!) I'm wanting a bit more bass. Consideing a Focal and Genesis audio set up with some sort of small concealed woofer somewhere.

Pics... as mentioned I'd love to inundate this thread with pics but I cant seem to sort my Photobucket out! if anyone has any suggestions on how to sort it please let me know.

thanks
Irfan

Great update but really does need the pics wink

I think the general consensus is that you can cough up to Photobucket or move all your images and re-host on a different platform. Personally, I use Flickr and find it really good - no issues. You can then edit your original posts to re-direct to your new links.

Quick as you can please - I'm keen to see this murdered-out C63!

... made the move over to Flikr. i can't believe the cheek of Photobucket, infuriating i can't even access my own images on their site. I will eventually re upload all pics to Flikr and replace the old links in this thread though.

Moving forward for now, here is how the car is currently looking:

Stunning car! I am glad you sorted your pics out, I was seeing the Photobucket error messages popping up through the thread hoping that towards the end I would be rewarded with some pics.

Calipers look lovely, I am sure I recognize where you took your pics - did you used to have a TR R32?? If it was you, that sir was also stunning, read that thread several times and loved the touches you made to it!

How you finding running the C63 in comparison to the R32, my MK5 R never really returned great MPG and would imagine costs wise they are similar...

Nice car, almost identical to mine!

Iv had issues with my wheels aswel coming out to a flat one morning, once had to chance to check it the alloy actually had 3 cracks in it! MB charged a nice £580 for a new one wish I had gone with a set of aftermarket ones now as apparently it’s a common issue.

Nice to hear your thoughts on the secondary cat deletes as I’m thinking of doing the same. Yes Also read a lot about the eurocharged maps and peoples issues with various things I think il go with an MSL own map.

...yesterday evening was a very sad day, I watched the new owner drive away with my C63.

it was dawning on me that running two cars was just getting a bit silly - two lots of tax, insurance, MOT. The 530d while serving its purpose brilliantly over the last 18 months being used as a work horse, was starting to become very costly in terms of upkeep on the wear and tear items - as expected on a 12 year old 140k mile car. So I told this a few weeks ago. The C63 would then sit outside the house most of the week which just seemed like a bit of a waste.

So after the 530d was sold, Running the C63 for both work and play wasn't really viable. Fuel costs aside (easily a tank and a half a week, even if it had a bigger fuel tank for less fuel stops it would make things easier) it isn't hugely comfortable to eat miles in to be honest, it is a very hard ride. Not only that, I'd quickly rack the miles up, so I had to bite the bullet and sell it on 36k miles and get something more sensible.

.. So I pick up a Porsche tonight! lol. Its a Generation 2 (66 reg) Panamera, with a twin turbo V8 diesel. Running a diesel everyday I do have my reservations as it wont have the drama or character of the C63, but 4wd, 420 bhp, 630lb ft of torque and a (pinch of salt here) return of 42mpg (90 litre tank gives a range of circa 800 miles between fill ups!) makes it a very hard proposition to ignore as a daily driver. It'll even do 0-60 faster than the C63 at 4.3 seconds, bearing in mind the Porsche weighs 2 tonnes. The car in particular has £24k of options - it is light-years ahead of the c63 in the interior and tech department. The strange thing is I'm 27 with no family commitments - I certainly don't need a car this humongous. And I mean it really is the titanic with a Porsche badge.. but it seems one of the very few options to have a 'meaty' v8 diesel that I hopefully wont get bored of too quickly. I do like to be different, so 335d's and all the rest of the usual suspects were not remotely on my radar.

Never the less, I have no doubt that the C63 will be, and remain, in the top 3 best cars that I will ever own regardless of their value or 0-60 times, or looks and so forth. It really is an absolute thug of a car but can be perfectly civilised when it needs to be - its a proper Concorde moment of the car world having a 6.2 n/a v8 shoe horned into a rep mobile c class.

if you've followed my thread and your considering getting one - do it, you wont be disappointed!

Sold mine in May but we went in very different directions!

I ended up with a Lotus Exige V6S which I was able to do as I have a GLC SUV as my daily work wagon.

I was devastated about selling the C63 initially but was ok once I'd bought the Lotus. It's good to experience different things.

Enjoy your Porsche!
