After my neighbours' cars were scratched 6 months ago, I setup an external nightvision IP Camera on our behalf, and low and behold this week it paid off. Cars down street were scratched a second time. I went through the footage and I've found the lowlife. It's daylight footage and its brazen not concealed - looks unambiguous to me. As before, I've logged the incident with 101.

If the perp turns out to be a juvenile - he looks like he might be - what's the likely outcome? He apologises, the street sucks up the insurance costs a second time?

Whether the perp is or is not a juvenile, if local plod fail to investigate or identify, is there any comeback on me if I use fb/twitter?

There's a story of this nature on the Daily Hate. Footage was posted on fb, perp was identified, guilty in court, costs paid up, and also named and shamed in national press. Helluva way to regret a few silly seconds.

If the police don't act/take any interest the below may help motivate smile

Prob best to post on a local FB page may get a better reaction than from the police, just warn the locals of this persons predilections to damage other people's property so they can keep an eye on them?
More useful than a £5 fine payable at 2p a week.

The first aspect is how good the photo is for ID purposes. If it's good quality, it sounds a good candidate for the police to use in a 'press release' which can include their own social media pages.

If not, there's nothing illegal about you posting it as long as you don't do something obviously stupid like incite violence against him.

Juvenile punishments can range from a Youth Caution through to a conviction like an adult would receive depending on the severity of the crime, if he admits it, what his previous is etc.

Why are people so spasticated that they feel the urge to key peoples cars?

^^Exactly what I thought. I can, in a way, understand (Not condone) theft of essential items in desperate situations as the perpetrator has a real sense that they "need" to commit this sort crime for survival, to feed children etc... But mindless disregard for someone's property which has nothing for the perpetrator to gain I cannot get my head round this. It's criminal damage at the end of the day, the juvenile (or not) must be accountable either themselves or via parents, I think, though I'm not sure on this, that the parents can be charged to pay up at least the cost of repairs if guilt is proven/admitted in court? The police though would need to be able to get a positive ID form the CCTV footage, also I thing CCTV evidence alone is not enough to convict in court, but it requires someone to admit that the images shown is definitely them. Hope the little scensored t gets caught.

If he admits it and the criminal punishment is woeful there's nothing stopping you chasing him through civil action. He probably hasn't got a penny to his name but you could give him some grief for minimal expense even if you don't get any/much money back; if he's underage do his parents have any liability????

This! Weed the little scumbag out name and shame him.

The amount of posts like this I've seen go viral and the perpetrator is identified would be much satisfying for me than a slap on the wrist off the old bill.

Have a look at the ICO cctv code of practice
They changed thier tune on private CCTV use about a year ago and massively reduced the scope of the private use exemption from data protection act.

If you are filming the street you should be registered with the ICO and your usage of the footage must be inline with the principles in the data protection act.

The cctv was setup for crime prevention and detection, so posting on social media in an attempt to identify the offender aught to be reasonable use, but posting to ridicule, abuse or damage the reputation of the offender aught not to be in my opinion.

That's fine. As I said, I installed the thing as a result of previous vandalism. And now I have evidence, just NFI who it is and would like local plod to, um, respond to the incident?

Pathetic jealousy would be My guess!

Many years ago, it used to be the case where I worked that if anyone turned up in a brand new car, on the first day it was spotted in the car park some acensoredhole would key the paintwork! mad

I've never understood the mentality involved in that!

Whoever did it must have known that the owner wasn't earning mega-money as they worked for the same company.

A PCSO has now visited, and I swapped a DVD-R for an autographed evidence chit.

Here's some stills of the perp/twerp:

Fingers crossed he (or his girl pals) can be identified.

The cops will probably know him, but if not someone local will, so if the cops do nothing, then an anonymous transit, Shovel, bag of lime and a couple of heavy duty mates in the back, when you spot him quietly roll up alongside side door opens, two pairs of hands grab him chucked in the back, drive up to the local moors, marched onto the moor, told to start digging, if he asks what the lime is for then tell him it's for enhancing the decomposing process, after a few minutes remove his shoes and socks and tell him if another car gets scratched then it'll be for real and just leave him there.....

Now a friend of mine did just this a few years back and the scrote concerned literally shat himself and then had to walk over 10 miles..
