Great thread, hope the rest of the restoration goes well!

Always amazing the history that one finds when paint is stripped off and the skeleton is laid bare!

Thanks. The talent that these restoration specialists possess is amazing. I just hope they can train apprentices to be as skilled.

Sorry for not posting sooner. in September the frames were thoroughly checked for rust etc and were found to be perfect. They were fitted to check for alignment

Existing repairs and new repairs were carefully 'let in' and traditional spot welds were reinstated where required.

By Oct 2016 and after lots of repairs, use of english wheel to flatten and shape bonnet etc, the restorers achieved some stunning results. Tight panel gaps and no need for any major filling etc later in the process of restoration.

I hope you will agree its grear work and well on schedule

The car went to the paintshop just before Christmas and a very thin layer of modern filler was added and hand blocked.

Further prep and priming...and I thought it would be painted as the next step..

But no..the car will now be fully dismantled and the whole bonnet will be broken down into components- ready for paint of the inside of the panels before being reassembled for final prep and paint.

Thanks.

The engine and all ancillaries are prepared for fitting. It should be painted by Mid April and then another 8 weeks to build up. So a little behind schedule but I am not complaining as it eases cashflow.

Well, if you know anything about France it is that they make haste slowly. They dropped my car completely to prepare cars for Retromobile so that was a month lost. Of course, they didn't tell me now did they? I rang last week as there was a meeting Sunday. The discussion got heated and he really shouted at me. Once again, the French know how to treat customers! I have had trouble with this company before many years back, but that was mechanical, not bodywork for which they have always had a good reputation. Little did I know that the company has now been sold and that the young man in charge doesn't know one end of an E-type from another, let alone the difference between models. I shan't use them again. I have been many times to see how things were getting on and had a shock to find (no fault of theirs) that there had been a brake fluid leak over the pedal box. So, a new chassis plate, repainted part of bulkhead, etc. to correct that part too. It's a pity she isn't ready since I shall be in the UK on Wednesday at Goodwood to watch and photograph cars being prepared for the members' weekend at Goodwood. To answer your question, I'm picking her up when I get back.

I wish I possessed such skills. I just find the odd nice car and write the cheques.

The real skill lies with the restoration guys.

Would be curious to understand the costs of doing something like that or at ;east certain things but fully understand that somebody might not want to disclose those informations

Didnt Mark the vet on TV do an E Type convertible and the bill was £75 grand ? I believe he muttered it at the end of the rebuild.
Whatever, this is going to look totally stunning when done.

This is an excellent thread. I am marvelling at the panel gaps your guys are achieving. So many E-Types are ruined visually (at least for me) but poor panel gaps. But yours will look perfect.
