that's really stunning, great to see an early Mk2 like this as very few will have made it, I remember when this age of Golf Gti Mk2 was almost impossible to sell and worth nothing - mid nineties everyone wanted later model big bumper PAS etc.
I had an early car like this for track days (B356 YOD) it had previously been used in sprints in the South West and had some TSR bits on it which gave it incredible handling, but had a weak engine.
Its still one of the best handling cars I have ever driven round Brands I wish I had spent more money and put a proper engine in it.

I had a J reg 5dr 8v GTI in my mid 20's and loved it, definitely in my top 3 cars owned.
That looks to be a beautiful original example, I bet you get lots of comments at petrol stations etc? I have a black '81 Merc 500 SEL as my classic toy and get comments on about 50% of my outings in it.

God I love MK2's, had six GTI's, four MK2's, loved mk mk1's but the MK2 was a much better car, in most areas, maybe the MK was a bit better looking but its not night and day, I won one in a Daily Mirror competition when I was a skint 18 year old, my dad bought it off me and I eventually got a 1.6 Mk1.
My son got a FIesta ST the other day and that reminded me a bit of a MK2, with a hint of R5 GT turbo style boost, would love to drive one again, wonder whether they will still hit the spot like they used to, loved the unassisted steering, the fact the MK2 brakes worked and they always felt fairly brisk.
Still got an itch for a 20VT converted one.

Superb. Drive it, dirty it, clean it and repeat. Don't let it sit in a garage! Screw concurs, it has an interesting history, cherished and loved. It deserves to wear its patina with pride.
Keep us updated. Where was the Sheffield meet? Not to far away for me
Thanks, I agree with your comments and try to use it as often as I can apart from the winter.Keep us updated. Where was the Sheffield meet? Not to far away for me
The Sheffield meets are at Damon's restaurant, last Sunday of the month, 10am. There is a Sheffield Cars & Coffee Facebook page I believe.

Great car- mk1 & early mk2 GTi's were so far ahead of their contemporaries & have aged well.
K Jet engined cars indeed felt sharper too. Fresh injectors & a setup at somewhere like stealth racing would be a top plan...
Thanks for the tip. The car does have a couple of common K-Jet issues, (misfire under heavy load, reluctant hot starting) despite replacing the WUR and accumulator, so I will get the injection system properly serviced later this year.K Jet engined cars indeed felt sharper too. That's lovely. I had three mk2 GTIs - a standard 8v, modified 8v (2.0, flowed etc.) and a standard 16v.
I've never seen one with a light-up gearknob, would love to see a pic of you get a chance.
Thanks. The gear change indicator light is on the dashboard, not on the gear knob.I've never seen one with a light-up gearknob, would love to see a pic of you get a chance.
