I'd second that. It won't fix it, but might possibly improve it a bit. Sometimes it has gone wrong in the first place because some idiot has put the wrong fluid in it.

It should be CHF11S IIRC - either way, make sure it is green - not red (or brown which they often are when someone has topped it up with the wrong stuff!).
Hmmm.. From memory the fluid was a dirty brown when I check it last

I'm OK on the spanners and have carried out engine / gearbox swaps and rebuilt a Lotus onto a new chassis. I'm OK if I have time and space to work, less keen if I need the car back on it's wheels for work on Monday if you see what I mean.

Still, I hear what you're saying and will try the fluid flush and see what improvement that brings. It's not bad but I can feel that it's not right..

Anyway, sounds like the OP is desperate to spend some spare days lying on his back freezing his bks off and slinking his knuckles. Good luck OP. hehe
Hmm.. good point and well presented. The rack doesn't show up in the MOT history, so looks like I could leave it if necessary - MOT due in December.

On an unrelated note, the control arms that I've just changed have been advisories since 2012!

While up in the Lake District recently it became apparent that the handbrake on the D5 was pants, with a long travel and an inability to hold the car at what seemed like 45 degrees on Hardnott Pass.

A quick google suggested that adjustment was limited, but that adjusters could be retro fitted, which is how I spent this afternoon. While I was there I fitted the new rear drop links which came with the front ones which I fitted recently.

Not all good news as I found another problem while I was underneath - the rear exhaust hangers are rusted and broken at the welds to the pipe and need replacing, so one of these is on order from eBay

Not sure what happened to the pics - they were the right way up when I uploaded them!

Yes, and mine has improved significantly through being used as well. I'm going to flush the PS fluid and then probably leave it.

New exhaust mount arrived today to I nipped out and fitted it - nice easy job

But... the rear mount looks like it's not long for this world, so one job crossed off and another one added

Well it failed its MOT today on a bulge in one of the rear tyres that I hadn't spotted. Apart from that all OK and no advisories, so not too bad. Shame about the tyres as they had a good amount of tread left, which is why I didn't change them when I did the fronts.

Kwik Fit were a bit sniffy when I wanted to sort the tyres myself rather than have their budget ones - told me that 'officially' I only had 24hrs if I wanted a free re-test, but then said they would stretch this to a few days.

Tyres ordered to match the Avons on the front and re-test booked for Saturday

MOT passed and another job crossed off of the list.

The radio only received sporadic MW, with a loud background hum. It would occasionally find a strong FM station if tuned manually, but wouldn't hold it and wouldn't find anything when scanning. I fancied hands free streaming and DAB so, rather than piss around looking for bumper mounted antennas, I invested in a cheap DAB / FM antenna, a step drill, a Pure Highway DAB radio, an eBay facia adapter and an ISO lead and ended up with this

Sounds perfectly adequate for Radio 4 on the way to work and for Radio 5 Live when the footie (or the Archers) is on, so all good smile

Thanks, but I'm going to reserve judgement until I start using it in anger! The lease on the Zoe is up in January so I'm still using that as my daily until it goes back - fingers crossed that the Volvo will be OK though!

One job left and that's to fix the rear exhaust mount - I have the parts, just need a spare hour and the motivation to get underneath

Been fancying one of these for a while. They are very cheap on fleabay.

As an aisde, where is it possible to buy an aftermarket radio that is not lit up like Blackpool. They all look horrendous, (including I'm sorry to say, the one in the pic) frown
Yeah, I know what you mean - please let me know if you find one that does hands free and DAB as I much prefer the OEM look.

I could only find stuff that looked as though it was designed by a partially sighted 17 year old.

I had a D5 in that colour. Isn't the turning circle bloody awful?

Is your swirl rod still present? They tend to break and fall off.
Pffft.. The turning circle is fine - in comparison to a canal narrow boat! This is a slight problem though as there is a tight turn into the garage which involves some steering shuffling.

No idea about the swirl rod - will investigate.

Well the V70 has been running well and averaging 47mpg on my daily commute (even though the OBC says 57mpg...). Until last night that it. Driving home from picking my wife up from the airport it suddenly lost all power, threw up an "Engine System Service Urgent" warning and coasted to a halt. An hour later it was on the back of a flatbed and was recovered home.

The fuel gauge hadn't reached the red yet and still showed 160 miles or range, but I remembered a slight hesitation on the way to the airport and suspected that it was out of fuel. Recovery guy looked at the fuel gauge, read the codes (MAF, low fuel pressure) and assured me that it would be a sensor.

Anyway, this morning I filled up a couple of fuel cans and put 10L of diesel into it and it fired up on the third go and has seemed OK since.

I'll change the fuel filter as I'm not sure when it was last done, but more importantly I'll make sure that I don't let it run below 1/4 tank again as the fuel gauge seems to be about as accurate as the OBC...

I suspect it is the in tank fuel pump, my S60 did something similar just before Xmas. The tank is a saddle type tank and as I understand it when one side empties the pump kicks in to transfer fuel to the other side where the fuel pick is.
Interesting - will investigate further, thanks. Did you manage to fix yours?

Well my eBay Vida / Dice turned up so I loaded it onto an old laptop and plugged it into the car to see what it could tell me, and it came up with this

.

Clicking on some gives me a bit more info.

Top one is because I changed the broken head unit I think
Not sure what my rear view mirror should be doing that it doesn't - auto dipping?
Alarm is faulty, yep needs the batteries changed
Hmm... windscreen wipers seem OK to me but car thinks otherwise..

Fuel pressure too low.. Hmm, maybe because the low pressure pump is duff?

Mileage manipulated? eek
No idea on the others.

Wonder what else it can do? Need to experiment!

Right I've cleared them all and taken it for a short drive and now I'm down to these;

It does throw up an occasional 'service engine' light so I'll have another look if and when it does it again.

Disappointingly I don't seem to have the option to turn off the DRLs, although I can make the windows go up and down with the laptop

Whereabouts in Bucks are you? I work in Aylesbury and live by Northampton, I don't suppose you'd fancy a mini 'facelift manual V70 D5 bought unseen on ebay that's had new suspension bits and fuel pump issues' meet? hehe

I mainly ask as when we cleaned up the seals around the fuel pump openings, the two friends I left doing it turned the ignition on to check the fuel pump still worked before they put the seats back in, so I've got an Airbag Service required message. It's more an annoyance than anything else, wasn't mentioned on the MOT as the red SRS light still illuminates and then goes out as normal, but it'd be nice to have it gone!

Would also be very curious to clear the codes and see what comes back.

I'm trying to think if I've seen your car around now, but I think the one I frequently see on my commute is another dark blue one scratchchin
More than happy to plug the Dice thing in and see if we can clear your airbag warning! I'm in Aylesbury and work from home a couple of times a week, so I'm sure that we can sort something out..

hi.
don't know if you know about the Swedish Car Clinic. they are on the A41 just outside Aylesbury.
(near on your bike)
they have looked after 2 of my V40s and now take care of my SAAB 93 aero.
.
they have about 3 guys, no fancy waiting room, and no service dolly....but you only pay about £50/hr labour..
http://swedishcarclinic.co.uk/
they can also pick up and drop off cars. (I don't work for them but a customer for over 7 years)

.
best of luck
Paul.
(near Bicester)
I have, yes - they changed my gear linkage cables recently when it lost 50% of it's gears the day before I was due to go away!

Didn't know that they would pick up cars but I stuck the bike in the back and cycled home anyway smile

Popped a new paper element fuel filter in this morning. Nice easy job with the car not needing to be jacked up to reach the filter housing underneath on the drivers side. Took a fair bit of cranking to start up again afterwards, maybe due to the duff in tank fuel pump and that I didn't prime the filter housing when I re-fitted it as I didn't have any diesel to hand.

Took it for a run to recharge the battery when it did kick into life again and it does seem to run better with an improved pick up. Worthwhile job I think.

The Volvo is still in daily service and continues to perform well. MPG has gone up slightly in the warmer weather to 50mpg (with 64mpg indicated on the OBC !!). A bit of gearbox noise has started intruding on my Radio 4 listening in the mornings - not much but I can tell that its there, plus it's been occasionally difficult to select reverse when hot.

The linkages have previously been changed, so I changed the gearbox oil this morning. Fairly straightforward as the filler / level and drain plugs can be reached through the N/S wheel arch - although I did have to whip the under tray off to get a spanner on the drain plug. I used a £6.50 syphon pump thing from Amazon to get the new oil into the box, which worked really well.

Anyway, initial signs are good after a quick trip around the block in that the noise seems to have gone. Longer trip tomorrow, so we'll see.
