It's home! 400 miles down and now extending the engine a bit more. Jack of all trades, and I'm really enjoying it. It just feels special (for a Golf)! 31MPG over the 400 miles so far.

Here's one for the Golf R drivers (or Mk VII in general)

Anybody else having problems with selecting reverse when aiming for first?

I've been driving 40 years, probably covered a million miles & never done this....up until I got the R.

I bet I've done it nearly a dozen times in the last 18 months. Can't decide if it's me being a dork, or something's up.

(had a few near misses as a result too!)

Full manual box I should add

Not as yet. But it's a push down and away? Is your gearbox allowing you to select reverse without pushing the gearstick down?

I reckon it is. But...if I try to do it (as a dealer would) I can't make it happen.

Sounds like it might be? Maybe check that the lock out function is working?

I guess I should run it in to the dealer....but I just know it's a fault they'll never find (as I can't make it happen when I try to! It's a bit off putting when you shoot off backwards at the traffic lights though!)

Little update:

6000 miles in now. Car is going really well. Engine has loosened up nicely and it still feels nice and quick. It's in daily use and MPG is still sat at 31, no complaints on that front ( I have a short daily commute).
It's a jack of all trades and has effectively replaced 2 cars - a 996 C4S and a BMW E90 320d.

The Golf has been faultless. I can see why they're so popular. Plans this year are a return to Wales and the Nurburgring and potentially Le Mans Classic.

hehe Mine's been out of race mode twice. Once when I had 300 Haynes manuals in it & the suspension was a bit hard. Once on a trip to the South of France when 'er indoors moaned a bit.
Much as I'd like to you can't cruise in race mode (in a DSG car) you never get into 6th.
Also, why call it Race Mode and then have the gear indicator say S1, S2 etc....

That's what I use mine for. Ideal daily.
Is your GTI a MK7?

Pull the DSG lever back once. It goes into 'D' and changes up fairly normally. It'll still be in race mode although the noise is turned down a bit.

It does look good in primer :-)

Glad you're enjoying it. I still only ever see anything near 30mpg on a motorway run. I'm usually getting 220 to 250 miles between fill ups. But that is far better than the V8 Audi S4 it replaced.

You've either a fault with your car or your right foot! Get near 40 on a motorway run, averaging 33 mpg overall. (not that it matters a jot)

Yup, Mk7 GTI Performance. Absolutely nothing wrong with it, just beginning to think an estate would be better for me at the moment.
