Good to see you're still enjoying it.

How are you finding S/C V8 power over Turbo V6 power?

I'm still wary of it if I'm honest! In the right (dry.......) conditions, it is a bit of an animal. In the wet it'll easy be able to recolour my underwear with barely any attempt to do so.
The noise though, still does it all for me. biggrin

The V6T was a perfect all rounder - enough power to have fun, but little enough to be sedate when needed. I do miss it as much as I am happy with the V8...

Hahahah, I can imagine! Given the choice again, would you prefer the Monaro or the Vec?

Out of those two, Monaro pips it for the experience.

In light of me buying a second car for daily duties to go alongside this however (a cheap Signum CDTi), something that is all-in-one would be ideal.
I was considering an Insignia VXR, Audi S4 3.0 or a Passat R36 before buying the Monaro - something along those lines would likely be on my list next time. smile

Yeah I imagine that the Monaro would pip it for experience. The S4 would have been my choice out of those listed.

Which delivery method do you prefer? Turbo or Supercharger?

Supercharger - the low down response is good and the whine sounds mental. laugh

Girlfriend doesn't agree though. Think she preferred the Turbo as you could feel it come in, but the Supercharger gets her off guard and she hates the shove of it. Very relictant to drive it herself too as a result!

hahaha, well at least it saves you having to worry about it as you'll be the one always driving it! hehe

I visited the Goodwood Festival of Speed again this weekend. Really good days out if you can do it - I recommend it.

Anyway, as mentioned in a previous post, I had been able to book the Performance & Supercar parking for the Monaro as it qualifies on their list of eligible cars....

A couple of days before and I was due to get the car out to give it a freshen up ahead of FoS. I'm glad I did (kind of...) as I found it to have a fully flat dead battery! That would have ruined my plans at 5.30 on a Saturday morning somewhat, had I not bothered to do this!!

Splurged out another ~£100 on a slightly larger replacement and all was well again. The trip to Goodwood was uneventful and was happily cruising along the A31/M27/A27 whilst pulling in a staggering average of 24mpg - I even got it up to 53.8mpg whilst going down a slight decline... frugal.

Parked up at Goodwood. Performance parking is publically accessible and behind the Ticketing wall, so anyone in the event can go around there. Mine was the only Monaro in there too, unsurprisingly.
Surrounded by some very exclusive cars too, even 2x Mclaren Mercedes SLRs, a handful of Aventador SVs etc etc. I felt a bit out of place...

Even got spotted by a fellow owner/visitor and posted on the FB group.

One week after the Goodwood weekend, the next event was the VBOA National Rally in Market Harborough.

Before I left, I gave the car a deep clean and polish, and loaded it up with the club gear I have at hand, which somehow dented the load carrying capability of the car somewhat.....

The weekend then started with me doing my usual routine in this car of filling it up, and then making my way to meet a fellow club admin at Milton Keynes Costco - where upon almost arriving without a hitch, there was a very loud bang and a slapping noise at low revs... fearing the worst, the bonnet was lifted to find the below;

A shredded Supercharger drive belt. Bugger. A quick call was made to the UKs specialist for the Holden models, Monkfish Performance, who only happened to be ~8 miles away from my position at the time thankfully, and they had one in stock! That was promptly purchased, and I cut the remains of the old belt off and made my way up to the VBOA venue. Just with ~150hp less than normal - slow! laugh
Luckily, the GF appeared in her Abarth 595 later in the day to supplement the power deficit.

I then spent an hour or so the next morning with some assistance from the others on site to get the new belt on - it was a proper pig of a job due to a lack of space and a tight fitting belt! To prevent removal of the Supercharger snout for improved access, which would then need refilling with turbine oil, it needed the engine turning over by hand to help drive it onto the pulleys.

Paired up with a friends VXR. smile

Shortly after the VBOA weekend, there was some rubbish news however - Monkfish Performance who have helped with this car for years now were going to cease trading at the end of the Summer - so, I bought some parts which need sorting whilst I can;

Propshaft Bearing
Battery Clamps
Floormat retainers laugh

I also ordered a shiny Mishimoto large capacity alloy radiator, but they didn't actually have stock and weren't ordering in new items, so I lucked out and will need to find another supplier for it. frown

I then made a change which I can't believe took me so long!

A repeating theme in my posts over the last year has been the 'whirring bearing noise' - I've tried a few things to source & resolve it but no such joy. Until now... Cracked it. biggrin

The Supercharger tensioner/roller was heard to be pretty noisy when we had it off at the VBOA Rally to replace the drive belt, so this was the next thing to check. It should have been done sooner!

The Roller has 2x Bearings installed within the body, these then fit to a stepped shaft on the cast assembly and is secured with a bolt & conical washer. Once the roller was removed, a few bits of debris fell out of it - and I was also able to remove one bearing on my driveway with some shock treatment and was not in a pretty state...

The next task was to take the bits with me to work, where they were given a blast in the parts washer, introduced to the hydraulic press, and then given another dose of the parts washer... It was clear where the noise was coming from for definite once it all was apart;

I went to a local supplier and picked up replacement bearings to the below specs - they are two different sizes due to the stepped shaft as mentioned, then used the factory tools again to press them in;

I got it all back together and it is now quiet - a total cost of ~ £16.00 & around 1 hour of my time. Nice and easy.

Next job is to do the Propshaft bearing change and some transmission oil changes....

Though I wish I had a workshop & lift as am not feeling a driveway job as Autumn well and truly closes in... (n)

Also, it needs some changes and I need some inspiration. I feel that it needs some nicer wheels and a few visual tweaks/tidy ups. It looks a little boring frown

visual changes?

Is it too soon to bring back the Bad-Boy bonnet, a set of lightbrows and Lexus-style rear clusters?

Kept my word from my last post - Propshaft Bearing.

Some Youtubes research of Australian men in crap vests in shonky garages inspired me that it would be a straightforward job to do on my driveway, bar getting the car up etc where a proper workshop lift would have been very welcome.... The Aussies were right it is straightforward. Unless you own MY Monaro that is. Where every job takes at least twice as long as it should or probably would for anybody else.

So, car up & off the ground - the clutch change earlier this year reminded me that all 4 corners up gave good access, so I did the same. (it was a little misty today, hence looking darker than it actually was...);

IMG_5183 by Dave Gritt, on Flickr

Then whip some of the Exhaust off, giving access to the Prop - remove it - 3x Bolts at Gearbox end, 3x Bolts at Diff end, 2x Bolts on the Bearing support - little wiggling, bosh, off. Comparison shot shows how knackered the old item was - can see why it clunked a fair bit now;

IMG_5185 by Dave Gritt, on Flickr

Next step is to split the Prop at the universal joint. Old Youtubes Aussie used a vice to help, I had to use my foot and a weird standing position. This was rubbish. It barely moved. So, using sciences I decided Heat would be a benefit, but no torch here - hmm.... Gas Hob? Yes, snuck into kitchen whilst GF was in the front room, and applied Gas Flame. This helped, a few 6lb hammer strikes after saw the item in two pieces - it was rusty inside, explains the difficulty in separation then. (I straightened out the little nicks in the weak collar that can be seen - this is just a guard/cover anyway;

New part got slipped on, the Prop reassembled and then eventually got it refit. Had to make two attempts at this as it just didn't seem happy to all line up at first and I was thinking that it wasn't properly located but in the end it seemed to be normal. Run the car with the Exhaust off, did a little wee. Cleaned up. Job done;

The list slowly gets shorter. smile

Next is Gearbox/Differential fluids. Going to see if a friend who works in a Garage can fit me in on a Saturday after hours to use his gear and lift. Will chuck him some beer tokens if so. I can't be bothered with this driveway malarkey at the moment.

Only one on the move... disappointingly.

That v8 noise is pure music. Lovely.
