Actually the comparison with a GOlf above isn't as silly as it initially seems...

Depreciation:
CL cost you £9k / Leasing a 2.0 TDi over 5 years would require 2 leases with deposits of £1k and payments of £330 = £22k

Maintenance:
CL cost you £7k / New golf over 5 years you'd spend maybe max £1,500 including tyres

Fuel:
Over 7000 miles a year with MPG of 18 in the CL = £10.5k / 50MPG in the Golf = £3.5k

Insurance:
If you're older is negligible these days, I pay £350 on a Maserati GT, Golf might be £250 best case

Tax:
CL = £500 / Golf £110

So over 5 years, the CL is a total of £30,750
Golf TDi leased is total of £28,810

Obviously this only works if milage is reasonable - however as OP said above, you have to have the liquidity to pay for big repair bills and not mind being off the road for a bit occasionally.
Nice one Jake...

So it boils down to liquidity and appetite for/tolerance to risk. Not on for someone who can just about afford the lease on the Golf.

Fact is the CL just makes you feel SPECIAL

My wife has a Golf and whilst it is undoubtedly quick., comfortable, does everything etc, it is nothing compared to a 120£k Merc!

Not only is the power unbelievable, but the comfort, ride and toys are amazing

Everyone likes to look at the car - I get admiring looks at the lights everyday and it just makes me feel warm inside!!

Remap to 600bhp is next on the cards - that is when my new coil pack £1000 is fitted!

I have to admit they really do feel special my dad has a TT63 & when I borrow it they do make you feel like you're in something a bit special, Interior wise they make my loaded E500 feel low rent.

My uncle has the TT500 & that's a nice option for those that like their bills a bit lighter biggrin

Nice car OP

Well done Simon great choice such a lot of car for the money and a stunning example!!! Have considered one of these many times but never happened for a variety of reasons one being fear of maintenance. Hopefully your ownership prives me wrong. Out of interest what is the distronic cruise?

True. I think a half way house is a good compromise for new car ease but a taste of something better than 4pot diesel hatch back.

Cars like a 3-5yr 530d/I E350cdi/AGI E500/540 BMW and large 6 and 8 pot saloons/couples from any of the german 3 will give you near CL600 feel good and not far off new hatch running costs, even when stuff goes wrong.

Distronic cruise is cruise control which automatically.adjusts to traffic. As you approach a car, the inbuilt radar slows the car and then speeds up again when the car in front moves

Oh, and the cl would be worth something at the end. The golf would be zero
I suspect in 3 years time they'd be worth about the same, but the Golf would eventually depreciate to zero while the CL would always have a value of a couple of grand if it was moving under it's own power hehe

You're wrong a 530d/E350 doesn't come close this coming from someone who has a loaded E500, it doesn't come close to to feeling as special.

Which would you prefer to drive around in a CL600 or a leased diesel Golf

It doesn't matter what the golf is worth - its leased so effectively zero.
Not quite he's only taken the depreciation as the term cost of the CL as opposed to the full purchase price

How would you say the W216 CL600 compares to W215 from a driving perspective?

Also interested as I never found the ride that great on my W215 (on 18's) but someone had fitted MPSS tyres which were probably a bit firmer than they should have been.
