Well what interesting timing - the past week I've been looking at TTs in quite some detail and it was only today me and a friend were discussing how amazing it is that you can get such a car for the money! We had the 20vt engine in our old A6 (in 150hp form) and bar the oil pump issue stated on here it was incredible, the engine got to 190k in the end and unfortunately it was the rest of the car letting the side down. Always wanted to modify that engine but timing was never right so I'd love to have a play around with one properly. Circumstances now mean I have a short commute and no need for any real practicality, I just need some refinement compared to my current Nissan 200sx and of course I want to retain some flavour! Will be following this thread and making my decision later on this year when insurance on my current car is up..

ETA:
Maintenance wise the engine had an alternator, clutch/flywheel, 4 coils, rocker gasket and a good service every 10k. The oil pump was the costly mistake as unfortunately it was only when the top end started making shocking noises we found out about it, there really are no other symptoms so do drop that sump and check the strainer. After that the oil pump was changed and it went on for another few years. That's that, all it needed for 190k even in its stressed 150hp form in a 1500/1600kg A6. Epic engine
They are really good engines, they can produce decent power, more than enough for road use and they can last for ages if you look after them.

I'm more than happy with mine so far smile

B/W pic as it's dirty at the moment hehe

The wheels set it off, good start it being black and unbarried as well, I really have a thing for these, still cheap as well, cant imagine they will stay such good value forever.
Cheers cool

I intend to keep it looking standard (ish), may update the grills and exhaust in time. I won't be messing with the suspension or interior though.

Very interesting to stumble across this post as I'm in exactly the same position as the original poster - I've got a 53 plate RX8 and have just done a deal to trade it in for a 03 plate TT 180! It was too good a deal to pass up - £3,000 for the TT, and it's only got 68,000 miles on the clock. The interior is absolutely immaculate, with the leather seats and Bose sound system. It felt very tight and solid when I took it for a quick drive, so hopefully there won't be any hidden gremlins to be found when I take it home on Monday.
Good choice, I picked mine up in November and haven't looked back to the 8, it does everything properly with no fuss, apart from carrying passengers in the back, which I never do anyway hehe

How much was the upgrade to twin exhausts plus the valance?
In hindsight I'd recommend finding a 225 if you can, as the brand new upgrade route is quite a costly one.

It can be done cheaply though, pick up a used 225 exhaust for 50-75, reducer pipe for 10 and a used 225 rear valance for 20 or modify the 180 one for free. All in for less than the price of the qs valance...

I'm very happy with mine though wink

I bought my TT to replace my outgoing Mazda RX8 PZ on 7th November '16 so it's six months to the day, so time for a quick review!

I paid £2k back in November, i looked at a few, there were cheaper cars, and more expensive examples too, this was local, in good condition with loads of maintainance work done so it was an easy choice.

In my ownership it has had an oil service, sump cleaned & pickup pipe replaced. Also had new spark plugs and battery but it needed a starter motor after it decided to let me down at the petrol station about a mile from my house.

Had it recovered and a replacement was fitted at the local garage, it hasn't missed a beat since though and passed the mot back in Feb.

During the next 6 months I might look into getting some aftermarket springs or coilovers as I'd like to go a little lower (nothing silly though) and maybe improve the handling a bit.

I don't usually keep cars that long really, but there's nothing I'd replace this with now on the same budget.

It's a lot of fun as a commuter/2nd car, enough power for the road, sounds brilliant with the scorpion exhaust and never threatened to get out of shape through winter. On the whole it's been excellent.

Black TT with alloys from a higher spec model friends!

Really lovely example of a MK1 TT, these seem to be quite a good buy for the money these days and I've always liked these, new exhaust setup looks good too, really wish mine had twin exhausts but finding a V6 valance on it's own for sale is difficult - can only seem to find complete rear bumpers with valance.

Nice to hear the ownership experience has been fairly smooth and these do tend to hide their age quite well with both the build quality and how they look.
Cheers mate, yeah apart from the early issue with the starter motor ending this has been a joy, the twin exhaust really sets a TT off from the rear.

I've seen videos of a mk2 valance being cut with a saw and dremelled to accept a twin exhaust, something to think about if you can't get hold of a genuine dual valance, and have a steady hand!

The TT is still going strong, owned it for 8 months now.

A lot of people worry about things going wrong on used cars, I've added up the last 3 years of history for this Audi TT, if anything is gonna go wrong , it probably would've done in 3 years as that's a fair length of time for a car of this age and mileage.

I've obviously ignored tax, fuel and insurance, oh, and mods! These are just the receipts for maintenance over the past 36 months. (Also a popular new lease deal length smile )

2014

Dipstick, n/s inner CV gaiter, o/s outer CV gaiter £116.00

New Turbo, turbo system inspected, oil pick up pipe cleaned £518.00

2x tyres £120.00

Cam belt, water pump, timing belt + full service £400.00

2015

Set of springs £208.00

2 tyres £102.00

Rear discs and pads, abs sensor, power steering cooling loop £178.00

Temp sensor £15.00

Brake pads £59.00

Service oil & filter £120.00

Tracking, anti roll bar bushes £80.00

Bosch wiper blades £25.00

2016

2 tyres £120.00

Exhaust manifold £325.00

New battery £105.00

Oil & filter service, 4 spark plugs, alignment £150.00

Starter motor £120.00

2017

side light bulb £4.00

2 tyres 174.00

Track rod end 93.00

If my maths is correct, that's a total of £3,032.00 to keep this on the road over 3 years.

Thoughts?

Well it's less than my Discovery 2, think I've spent close to £5,000 in around 3 years!

I'm considering selling the D2 this year and am looking at a 3.2 v6 mk1 TT
3.2's are great and you can probably pick up a nice DSG Mk1 for £3k now, there were none under £4k a year ago.

10 months in, which is quite long for me. The TT is behaving itself impeccably to be fair, not cost me a penny for a while.

Probably jinxed it now smile

I'm very tempted to get another Mk1 TT as a station/weekend car!

Won't be until my lease Alltrack goes back, but a third Mk1 TT would be great - maybe a 3.2 this time for a change and the sound!
Do it, Mk1's are a brilliant car, as you already know having had two! I could definitely see myself getting another if this one ever gave up on me.

3.2's do sound amazing. Eyes open for "chain stretch" and dsg issues though.

Well, she's gone.

After almost a year of ownership I sold the little TT yesterday. Managed to achieve just under my asking price too which was nice.

Going down to single car household for now, (BMW X5) which makes room for a motorbike smile

Yes a grand a year does seem quite high, But at the time I was considering leasing a Renaultsport Megane at £280 a month so I did ok in the end financially going the used route. smile

They're really underrated cars, ignored by petrolheads after it took a bashing from a certain car journalist. When you look past the image you get a modern 4wd turbo coupe for under £2k. I'd have another in a heartbeat.
