That is a lovely DC5. One of the lads on the Honda Accord Type R forum, Hugh, bought a Milano Red DC5 I seem to recall. Sorry to hear about the dodgy paint. I'm interested to know happened. I spent 4 years completely rebuilding every single nut and bolt on my Accord Type R (See thread on PH wink ) and i had to send mine back because it wasn't quite as I wanted. They certainly got it right second time though...Trouble is soft as st bloody Honda paint. You can put marring in it just by thinking about it, let alone touching it. Damn stuff holograms like crazy and I am a seasoned detailer with over 15 years experience and I still have to be sooo careful to avoid any marks. Mine is Pirates Black and whilst it looks incredible in the full sun, part pearlescent, it is a bh to maintain. I do a lot of the Jap shows and all Honda owners say the same thing curse

Make sure you hold out until it is done RIGHT because it's worth it and you wan't be happy until it is. An old mate of mine who is the marketing manager at Meguiars used to have a CW Teg DC5 and I'd never even seen one before until I saw his some years ago and I was blown away. Such an excellent looking car and it has a somewhat timeless quality to it, as well as sounding great.

That is absolutely stunning OP, well done.

Never really seen the attraction of these but that was before I saw a red one - wow! Yet another car added to my Autotrader watch list laugh

You have my envy wink

Well...after shopping around and going on a couple of genuine recommendations I ended up using a little family run place that mostly did classics and insurance work. They quoted me well for what i was under the impression of a full respray, lights out, bumpers off etc, so a pretty thorough job.

When i collected the car it looked pretty much perfect, although they had made a couple of careless mistakes (some marring on the bottom of the headlights from the edge of a DA, damaged a couple of pieces of trim). As it looked so good i let that go, was planning on replacing the headlights anyway.

After about 4 or 5 days back at mine, dark marks started to show through the paint, predominately on swage lines where the paint was thinner.

They were very apologetic (but unable to explain why it was happening), and took the car back for another 2 weeks. I got it back with about 2/3 of the marks seemingly covered, but some pretty bad finishing where they had obvs rushed the job to get it out again.

They offered to have the car back again, but frankly...no chance.

Long story short, it looks like they didn't put a ground coat or sealant over the old paint, other marks are since showing through, and will continue to do so no matter how much paint is put on the car....so ultimately the whole thing needs done again by a better paint shop.

Incredibly stressful, upsetting, and a costly error in body shop selection by me. Will deal with them in january as I don't want it spoiling xmas.

On the plus side it's now rebooked in at a high level paint shop, so will ultimately have a better than showroom finish and add some value to the car.

I really don't want to drag it into a small claims court, my priority is getting the car sorted

That is truly appalling. I hope you get it sorted. Makes my blood boil that these sort of fools have no clue what they are doing and couldn't give a monkeys about what they do, half a job cut corners and think its going to be ok. rage

I have seen this before at places that do insurance jobs, they do it on the cheap and work on the basis that the average man in the street won't even be bothered or worse still can't be bothered to check. It happened to me with a company car I used to have. It was a poor job and I went crackers and told them to do it again but again they made a balls of it. I had to give up as my company then decided they wanted to have the car for someone else as I was got another one. Sadly there are too many places that do a quick cak job as all they are interested in is throughput and quick cash.

Unfortunately finding a middle ground between these types of clowns and lottery money paint jobs, is not easy to find. Whatever happened to pride in ones work and a sense of accountability?furious

It's been a rather uneventful winter in the DC5, I couldn't bring myself to use it in the rain and salt since Christmas, so it's spent a lot of time as a driveway ornament.

However I did get the big 75k service out of the way on the weekend (thanks to local Honda specialist Dream Automotive, cracking guys), and actually drove the car seeing as it was dry smile

Also took the time to grease all the door and window seals, as i've had the odd bit of water getting in. Worked like a charm, although genuine Honda shin-etsu grease isn't the cheapest.

Amazing the difference a good service makes- all fluids changed, new plugs and valve clearances done..it's like driving a totally different car, and it wasn't running badly before.

It's going in for respray 2 in a couple of weeks, I have pretty high hopes this time around in terms of the finish. Going to look pretty decent for a 16 year old car smile

Nah different place man, way more expensive but a big step up in quality....they paint supercars, so the final paint job should add a good bit of value to the car, should be £10k+ in a fair wind over the summer (not that I intend to sell, but it helps justify the investments I'm making in it).

Little bit of kit for the car, now that it spends more time parked than driving.

Solar powered trickle charger, £18 from amazon smile Just to keep it topped off when it doesn't get driven for a couple weeks.

For some reason Honda specified a rather small battery for the size of the car...quite a few owners relocate it to the boot and fit a bigger one, may do this in time.

Dull but hopefully helpful box of used bits turned up today.

Been having issues with a very audibly unhappy DC5 in the colder weather when turning the wheel on a cold start. All signs point towards the power steering pump... Didn't really want to stick a brand new OEM P/S pump on, due to the eyewatering cost of £660!!

Managed to get a used OEM pump, reservoir and piping from a low mileage DC5 breaker for a very reasonable sum. Hopefully it'll sort the steering noise out, if not, next stop is the rack (really hope it isn't this, seems unlikely).

i said it a year ago, but i'll say it again now, cracking car! Always been a huge DC5 fan, especially in the Milano red.

Have you got a link to that trickle charger? my EP3 gets driven probably once a month, and I'm constantly having to remove the terminal to keep the battery alive.

Thanks

Took a little road trip to see the folks on the weekend, first time the car has had a long run for a good 3 months.

Fresh off the back of the big service it just drives so well, it's tempting to want to throw some money at power mods, but once it gets going it definately isn't slow in mostly standard guise.

Waving goodbye next week as it goes off for paint again, so thought i'd take the chance to wash it beforehand, something I enjoy and have missed doing lately.

What a lovely car mate. Sorry to hear about the paint issues but still looks amazing to me. Always nice seeing classic cars being looked after.

Work is well underway on her respray at Finishline in Stevenage. Unsurprisingly the strip down has revealed a few shortcuts/bodges by the previous painter, but to be honest, i expected as much.

windows coming out today, getting a new windscreen as the old one has a few chips, doubtful the current one will survive removal.

Should get her back in time for this winter weather to do one, looking as fresh as it would have off the production line 16 years ago...crazy to think how old these are getting now!!

Collected the teg from the bodyshop on Saturday...very happy with the results from the new place this second time round. Quality of finish and the level of detail and attention is so much higher.

Couple of quick snaps, more to follow when it gets a proper wax.

Highly recommend Finishline in Stevenage, Chris is super helpful and genuinely passionate about what he does.

Finally got a big enough weather window to properly wax and seal the new paint job on the integra.

Incredibly pleased with the respray, she's ready for the summer now.

Any DC5 owner will tell you that the OEM seats require a bit of regular TLC to stay looking decent. My passenger one is immaculate, but starting to get bolster wear on the driver's side. Eventually i'll pony up and get it reupholstered.

In the meantime, after a recommendation from a fellow owner, I picked up a pair of capital seating aftermarket covers. Pretty impressed with the quality at £35 each, and they're not static-y or slippery at all.

The car is now more or less sorted for Japfest Silverstone in May...the paintwork has been a real saga (both financially and stress-wise), but it hasn't tarnished my love for the car fortunately.

Just be careful with those covers.

If they don’t fit ‘really’ snugly they will ruck/crease like in your photo.

If you then drive regularly with the covers fitted the creases transfer to the bolsters underneath.

As for getting the Recaros refurbed have you done any research? I don’t think you’ll find any Alcantara that’s a decent match to the original stuff tbh

I'll keep an eye out, cheers. Car only gets used for a couple of short trips a week so they aren't going to be wearing every day.

A little, I have heard that can be a problem. Also given the refurb cost (£2-300 it would probably be less hassle and only a bit more cash to buy a better condition seat from a breaker.
