Following the sale of my Abarth 500 I needed a new car, and decided upon a Golf GTI.

This one has these optional extras:
Heated cloth seats
Reverse sensors
Auto wipers/lights
6 disc changer

And it cost me a paltry £2,850. For that you get a 2 owner, FSH, cambelt service done at the start of the year and 133K miles. Quite high yes, but not for these cars. There are some around this price bracket for 210K miles so I know that the engine is good for some years to come.

There's a couple of dents and scuffs here and there but thankfully, everything works as it should. I'll get a few more photos when the weather is decent but for now this is what I have

That's nice.

Didn't realise decent ones were under £3k

Nor did I.

I debate getting one of these. But an Edition 30 is tempting and of course they are more money. That said, they can have some expensive issues can't they?

I will be keeping an eye on this as next year I may go "sensible" and these are on my radar. If I was truly sensible I'd get a Mk2 Focus 1.8 or 2.0, but this is me...

They do go for cheap these days. But so many tatters about.

If I were you I'd change the PCV Valve, Diverter Valve and Cam follower immediately. - £120 in parts, 2 hours labour or easy to do at home if you can unscrew things and then screw them back together.

I would also drop the sump, replace pickup pipe and refil with Millers 5w40 Nanodrive oil. This is another home-doable jobbie if you have the right tools (I wrote a DIY in Mk5golfgti.co.uk)

Should be good to go then!

If you want tuning options, they are pretty cheap and give excellent results. I can give you some details if you want.

I also gave the interior a clean too, photos below.
And thanks for the info on the common issue, I've actually bookmarked the guides already as I intend on doing them all in a oner. Other than necessary maintenance I don't intend on spending any money on performance updates or the like

Yes, the "GTi Tartan" is particularly nice. Leather in Golfs tends to look very old, very quickly. Unlike a Merc of the same vintage, for example.

Cloth is definitely the one to go for in a MkV GTi. smile

The drivers seat is in great condition considering the mileage - looks like you have a good one cool

IME it's all down to the people who owned it.

I've bought cars before with 120k and the driver's seat looks almost new. It's clear the person (without being too harsh here!) wasn't a unit and generally got into and out of the car with car.

Alot of people will just scrape the bolsters or sit on them as they get into the car. But to be fair that could be down to other issues frown.

Great bargain, looks twice if not three times the price you paid.

Nice car. If I'd found one as nice as this at that price, I wouldn't have bought an Astra instead.

Really nice car. When I was looking last January, all of the ones at this price were DSGs with faults and massive miles and rusty and generally a bit crap

Lovely. Have a look and see if the wishbone bushes have been changed, I've had them done on mine recently and it is transformative smile

OP probably wouldn't be interested but the OEM bushes are really awful (voided for comfort).
Fitting solid Powerflex or Superpro bushes ("Anti lift kit") is really a brilliant mod.

Ugh wow, cheap!

I paid nearly £7k for one 18 month ago, albeit less miley and with a bit of a better spec.

Had some seriously intermittent throttle body problems that ended up being a massive pain in the arse. Could never pinpoint the culprit. Apart from that it was comfortable, quick and very capable.

That's a lot of car for the money, well done! What's the warning light on the dash? Looks a bit like washer fluid but I didn't think the GTi had a level sensor.

Anyway, I think you could sell that on in a year for the same price with a heap more miles under its wheels.

Thanks guys - and you're correct in thinking that I've no interest in spending unnecessary money on upgrades. If something breaks, I'll fix it. That's the stance I'm taking.

Also the warning light on the dash is to let you know that there's a door open smile

In my defense, mine had the full height display and showed a graphic of the car with a door open but whoops!

Like this

Keep an eye on the oil level, mine used a litre or so every 2000-3000 miles.

Using decent 5w40 oil will help in regards to the oil consumption "issue". I used maybe 500ML to 1L between services (10k).

I see, thanks. I've not looked in to modding this one so wasn't aware the OEM stuff was so poor.
