A friend of mine had this which I borrowed for a few days. The car is immense, I would look at an exhaust upgrade because the stock system is a bit somber for what this car is capable of.

On another note you need to be careful with throttle inputs as I've had a few hairy moments around roundabouts without really pushing it. (even with TC on).

I have an S class and though it's a lovely car I would settle for the 6 series for the smiles.

Very interesting comments re the S class GH421 as Ive been hankering for an S Class for my past 4 or 5 cars but none around at the time within budget and that weren't intergalactic miles so settled for something else that would catch my eye. Still an itch I will have to scratch at some point.

I really think you should consider the Maser...

No more expensive to run than what you're used to. I totally get the changing cars thing. I'm the same! We would be great lottery winners!

I love the QP but I'm afraid it's definitely a lot more expensive to run than a 650i.

check whether the gearbox fluid has been changed or not yet - BMW say sealed for life, but they can go a bit funny around 70k - look for a hard change or "stutter" when driving at a constant low speed. sign of the mechtronix box giving up.

I had an 54 645 cabriolet and like you say, absolutely stunning value for money - still not found anything else that can compete for power, speed, comfort and a bit left field in the same price bracket.

Tyres are expensive if still on RFT's and i had the alloys crack on mine which was a PITA - still loved it though and am looking to get another at one point.

2x main features for my next one:
- Sports exhaust - standard exhaust far too quiet for a V8
- cup holder - frustrating as hell without a good one smile

I would agree if the OP was keeping it long term but he's going to have the car for a year and then look for his next change.

A specialist indie service on either car is not going to have much in it. For an early 06 model the tax is the same. It will be a bit more thirsty but other than that over a years ownership there won't be much in it.

Just my opinion and if I've missed something would be interested to learn.

Clutch and gearbox are two very large bills that often crop up. If you google Maserati Quattroporte running costs you'll get a lot of results from owners: very, very few have been able to avoid several four figure bills in the space of one year.

Bentley running costs scare the living daylights out of me. I don't have a good wage. My car is my hobby as I don't do golf, fishing, the gym, lads nights outs, etc etc all my spare money goes to my car. So long as my bills are paid, my house is clean and tidy and I have a standard of living I am comfortable with, the rest pays the car. I fear a Bentley would ruin me if it were to develop issues. true the same could be said for the 6 series, every car has a point where it could bite you at any given time.
Had a look at Maserati but I think for my budget the interiors look almost 80's. Might just be my search results but thats an off putting thing for me. Good thing is any change is at least end of the year so plenty of time to research.
Hat-tip my friend, I'm the same as you smile

Bang-for-buck, that's a glorious car all things considered. Hard to know where to go from a 650i for £15k - what about an SL55 AMG or 2009-2010 S5 coupe?

To be fair your other half is obviously an understanding type who appreciates your passion for cars and I'm sure she respects that this is your only vice... therefore, take the £15k and finance a bit more and go crazy!

If normal maths won't make it work then simply use advanced maths, or man maths as it's commonly known.

I think her patience is wearing thin :-) been giving it some thought, I think next step will be a newer 6 in Convertible form - or a 740 / 750.

It's a lovely car, the beauty of the 6 is that it's still a fairly basic car, the engine does get oil leaks and the valve stem seas go but it's nothing that stops it working overnight the engine is pretty bulletproof. You don't have the added complications of air suspension and fancy braking systems that cause issues on some Mercs.. Biggest worry you have with the 6 is the gearbox going but even that's rare, I'd take the undertray off just to check it's not leaking as this soaks up most of the oil and you won't find out till it's too late.

Re mpg, I had a 550i Touring and have a 16 mile round trip commute and it averaged a calculated 19mpg, it was used properly most of the time and I was quite happy with that.

An LCI 650i with all the ideal options would be superb

It's a lovely thing - I ran one (06 as well!) for four years, and have only just changed to its newer brother, which is also awesome. smile

For £15k, if you like the 650 and what it does it's hard to ignore the CL500 (2007 vintage) - that's where I was expecting to go next before I upped my budget, but didn't get to test drive one. Downside is a number of scary looking stories about the cost of fixing a CL if it goes wrong.

I'm actually looking forward to having a good drive in it. Due to time of year, bad weather, just changing job etc All I have done since getting the car is visit family all within a 4 mile radius and the commute to work and back 10 miles each way. Will be interested to see the fuel consumption on a long 70mph drive. Been looking over my folder of receipts etc and the last service included a gearbox oil and filter service so thats that box ticked.

Very good! See whatyou did there?

Anyway, may I reccomend a proper gearbox oil change? If you just droop the oil and change the filter, it doesn't do much. It makes more sense to have it flushed. Costs about £120 and worth every penny.
