So it didn't pass or fail.

MOT station wouldn't test it as it has two VIN's....

It went to the same place it was tested last year ffs!

It was registered on its BMW vin like nearly all Alpina's are, so its V5 and MOT history are tied to that.

Sadly for some reason this MOT tester has decided that wrong and informed the DVSA that its likely a ringer.

Ah yes, the classic ALPINA issue.

This is annoying as the government specifically mention this in the testers manual. Section 2.20 at the link below:

That makes sense regarding the VIN, however there are potential ramifications from the MOT tester being a bit too busy, dobbing the car in as a result of his own ignorance.

Helpful person at the DVSA has also pointed me to section 2:20 and taken the flag off the car for potential registration issues.

Even Sytner branded BMW dealers had difficulty ordering the correct parts for my E46 B3S due to the double VINs. It's probably easier for them to order 330i parts on the BMW VIN but it annoys the owner when there's a delay because they've ordered the wrong thing...

This thing got the incorrect replacement engine the first time due to the VIN's....!

Somewhere buried in the deep history of my E34 B10 4.6 is a sheath of papers regarding a similar circumstance when a zealous MoT tester declared the car cloned and DVLA eventually instructed the Police investigate the vehicle and engine identity to clarify its existence. You can almost read the pained sighs of 'FFS' in the Police covering letter confirming the car is completely genuine and true to its Alpina build documents

MOT stuff is frustrating!

What’s the move now? Return to same place and staple section 2.20 to the testers forehead to make sure they acknowledge it this time? Or go elsewhere?

If it’s a new tester I take a few minutes out to explain about Alpina and show them the old BMW stamped number, then the new Alpina number, then the Alpina chassis plate and finally the previous years MoT certificate. If that doesn’t convince them I threaten to come back with the car history file with all the old MoT certificates in it as well as pointing out section 2.20.

If that doesn’t convince them then go somewhere else for MoTs.

By the way, you've sort of influence my decision making process on my next.

Needing a diesel due to increased commuting mileage and a budget of £10000, I've bought myself a 2018 Alfa Giulia Diesel with 113,000 miles, a low mileage example would have cost me about £4000 or so more (out of budget), however I've found a car that's been maintained without compromise and will do 20,000+ a year in it.

Cars that have done more than 100,000 miles often get ignored in the used car market, however there are good cars out there.

It worked the other way for me.
When insuring my E39 B10 V8 the girl on the phone came back after a long wait to tell me that as they couldn't definitively identify the car they would insure it at the same rate as a 520i ! Result !
