Loving this thread, reminds me of my youth, building Modified Saxo and 106's.
Have you got a mount/support for the turbo or is it just supported by the exhaust manifold?

Keep up the good work

Turbo is only mounted to the manifold.
Something I'd like to explore is side mounting the turbo over the gearbox. One for the future.

I watch you vids with interest as I am just about to re build/re-install a standard 16v lump into my 106 ( it's currently at the machine shop).
I notice however that you torqued your head bolts to 20 ft lbs, yet the online references are showing 20NM. Have you got that correct? Also no use of copper slick or similar on the head bolts?

Also did you pressure test your oil heat exchanger and top hose. The root of the problems with my engine were that this part had failed and was freely mixing oil with water.

I cant remember off the top of my head but the head stud and nut kit requires hand tight studs with or without locktight. Followed by three stage of torque up to 60lbft or NM, again I forget which. Im 100% confident they're correct.

Top hose (by which you mean coolant?), on standard engines you have a route for the oil cooler housing around the filter. Im running and external oil cooler so that pipe you use isn't combined with the oil circuit any more. If oil and water mix in this engine it'll only be from the block area and not external cooler pipes. smile

Episode 43 is ready. All focused around getting a radiator to fit with the turbo being slightly in the way. In the end a few tweaks to a Direnza ST150 alloy 40mm rad got me close enough but I did have to go for a custom header tank design. Also have a quick look at intercooler and mount the oil cooler.

Saxo Diesels (1.5) did have an external header tank but they're ugly and not AN10 ready hence the one off creation.

A few teasers:

Hi there, great thread OP. I started a Saxo rebuild at roughly the same time so it’s been great to see another happening to.

Question with your Brembo brake upgrade, which discs have you used. Particularly the disc height (offset) I see lots use Xantia discs but these are 28mm thick where as the 306 gti6 discs are only 22mm thick but seem to have the same offset but will of course be lighter and have less inertia.

Cheers

Next episode is available:

A really interesting video in my opinion. One I've been waiting to do. An engineering company called Satchell Engineering, who make some amazing stuff for French cars among other stuff (wide suspension kits etc), started to develop a clutch mech that would suit an original SAXO clutch cable and keep pedal feel close to normal even on a twin plate race clutch like mine.

I got wind of the development and got in touch. They were aware of my car and said I could have a 2nd gen prototype to test out on the car FOC. I said i'll give them all the credit, rightly due, and promote on the YT channel.

I'd love to throw one of my 106 XSis at Colin and see what they could do!

Need to catch up on these vids this week!

This thread is not helping right now.

Had a brand new Topaz metallic vtr for my first car. Seeing some around on Facebook Market place for not a lot of cash and I'm resisting the urge hard to not go and buy one for a project!

Episode 46 is live

In this one I make up the intake pipe for the RamAir cone filter which is trickier than it sounds because it has to dodge all the other hardware. I also get that BOV basically installed, just waiting on my silicone joiner hose to arrive.

Thick n fast right now, episode 47 is live. Slightly annoyed at myself for not researching a little more into catch can tech. I need to open this one up and modify the internals a little and increase the breather size so I may well start again but either way the principal is there!

Next episode is up. Finally get version 1 of the exhaust made:

Now before you all rush to comment (which seems highly unusual for this thread, no idea if anyone actually looks at it or not), this system is version 1 and will get me running and to mapping. It will be loud. I'm fairly sure it'll be totally unbearable and totally embarrassing on the road.

I'm at a point now where I'm nearly 3 years in and I want the car running before Xmas. When it's running i'll be happy to take the car apart again knowing its down to my own choice rather than me just not having done the work yet. So the plan is to build a more compliant system which will include silencers and potentially a sports cat (demountable) to make it MOT and road/track friendly. Also good to know i'll have a loud setup for those night down at Maccy D's!

I follow this thread although I dont watch the videos ( yet )

I enjoy this level of modification on a car that in my youth was historically held together with self tappers and sprayed with cans from Halfords

Episode 49 is live. In this one I get the brakes bled after several unsuccessful attempts. I get the exhaust back from ceramic coating and start getting some of the fluids in the car prior to first start. I think the next episode could be turn of the key.
