Given the space available, getting the engine back in seems like it'd be about as simple as your pictures make it look...
What fresh unexpected hell did you encounter?
I don't really have any space in my garage, so have to have the crane sideways in front of the car to hang the engine gearbox, then crank it up to the ceiling and swing it over, it's all a bit awkward, but actually getting it in place is relatively easy, although the Monaro engine bay is fairly empty now.

Engine in - 45mins
Getting them to join together - Most of my adult life!
After its first start back in the car it had 70psi of oil pressure too. Lovely.
Having the flywheel sorted has stopped a lot of the shake at idle too.
I guessed at the timing when setting it up. Once I got the gun on it, I was only 4deg out! Amazing.
Just fitted the brake reservoirs and started to bleed it up.

I did wonder if it would be that Engine in - 45mins

I fitted mine together outside of the car and tilted the whole lot in at a terrifying angle.
Fitting it together though was a nightmare. This turned out to be because the twin clutch plates weren't actually aligned well enough, so it'd slide in to the first but not the second... It was after much fecking about (including ignoring it for weeks in a strop) that I decided to try re-aligning them, and then the bd thing slid together like a hotdog down a hallway. Lesson learned
Car looks great

My issue was the tooth indents on the Spec clutch were just slightly too tight for the input shaft and none of the gearbox bolts were long enough to 'walk' the engine and gearbox together with! I fitted mine together outside of the car and tilted the whole lot in at a terrifying angle.

Also whoever designed the floating input shaft on a T5 gearbox needs to have a talking to.
