Collected the car today from Turbo Tech Glasgow. They refurbished the turbo, changed the oil with the correct Castrol 0W-30 A5/B5 and refilled the coolant with genuine Volvo concentrate. Only driven 3 or 4 miles home in heavy traffic so not tried the boost yet

Few pics the mechanic who was doing the work sent me

The cable tie clips to hold my wiring harness to the fan cowl were all either missing or burst so I ordered some non Volvo ones from eBay and fitted them today, another job ticked off the list

I had a bit of an epiphany this afternoon after I fitted the cable tie clips!!!
Although not impossible to release the cable ties, the location of them makes it extremely difficult to get to the tab with a tiny screwdriver to release the tooth that allows it to open, therefore cutting it is the quickest/easiest way when required.

When I built my garage back in 2008 I used cable tie clips for the lighting cables, drill a hole in the joist, hammer the clip in, put on a cable tie in and the job's a good-un.

I decided to take a look at the huge bag of clips I had today and although I've not tried on the car yet I'm sure it will go straight into the fan cowling allowing me to use a standard cable tie that can easily be disposed of and a fresh one fitted as required. Will update once I have tried it out

Great thread OP and lovely V70.

We've had many Volvos over the years, 240 Estate, V70 S1, 2 x XC90s, S40 and a V60.

First time in many years we are Volvo less but my wife and I always Volvo spot on journeys if we see a nice one.

On the way back from Cromer on Sunday spotted a S2 V70 T5. It was not the best condition and I can imagine it had done lots of miles but it still looked good and we both said we need another Volvo smile

XC70 is a contender but they are fetching decent money and I'm not sure I need the added expense of the 4WD system (even though our 2 XC90s were 100% reliable).

Yours would be ideal smile
Off I go to Atrader/Ebay/Market Place . . . .

Thanks GreatGranny, glad you're enjoying the thread. I had looked into an XC70 but 99% of UK cars are diesel engines and living next to a LEZ zone it wouldn't have been any different to the XC90 I had at the time of searching for a replacement, therefore I hung out until the right petrol car came up. Finding a good unmolested 18 year old V70 is getting more difficult, they used to be inexpensive cars but they have a strong following and prices are strong at the moment. I've spent too much time and money on mine so it won't be for sale any time soon. Don't forget to check Car & Classic, also Gumtree as they can often turn up some nice cars. Good luck with your quest...

I removed the undertray of the V70 tonight to check if the leaking turbo was sorted and happy to say it's all nice and dry

Last night when reviewing the above picture of the charge pipe connecting hose it didn't look correct. I decided to have a closer look at it this morning

This was the hose when I fitted a few months ago after I re-inserted the metal sleeve with the aid of a heat gun and large socket

When I removed the hose today it was obvious the charge pipe has went a bit skew-whiff as it wasn't lining up with the turbo. Hot air gun again being careful not to get it too hot and I moved it back to its correct position. I'm unsure if the charge pipe will have any 'memory' during heating/cooling cycles so will keep an eye on it over the next few weeks to ensure it doesn't go out of line again.

Back together and much looking better

Where did you get the alternator from, if you don't mind my asking?

Think it and/or the battery are on the way out on our V70XC - Earlier this week the immobiliser stopped my wife starting it for 3 attempts, then when I drove it a few days later the seat memory function wouldn't work (but the wing mirrors adjusted themselves accordingly ) and now my wife says the dash and headlights were pulsing last night so I reckon low/inconsistent voltage is making it go a bit senile.

(back in the summer I accidentally ran the battery very low so it just barely started the car and it threw an absolute fit - every warning message you could think of and some i'd not seen before! Then once they were all cleared, the next time we got in it the seat reclined itself all the way hehe )

These cars certainly don't like low voltage, it throws up all sorts of problems

I had to buy a new alternator as the cheap replacement RTX brand from Eurocarparts fitted on my car less than 12 months earlier was unrepairable and only fit for the bin

Spoke at great length to Jack at The Starter Motor and Alternator Company Tel: 01752 339871 https://www.startermotor-alternator-store.co.uk

Jack is extremely knowledgeable and helpful and will advise on the best solution for you

If you still have the original Volvo/Bosch alternator he can do a part exchange for around £110

Bookmarked, thanks smile

They're not actually _that_ far away either.

Pretty sure its still the original one still on it, if not it wil still be a volvo one - It had a full main dealer history until we got it.

Probably a job for the new year then - a new alternator and the biggest Bosch or Varta battery that will fit in the hole!

With SWMBO out at a Christmas party yesterday, the weather and the telly being utter crap I decided it was time to return to the ‘fir tree clips’ for the wiring harnesses that goes over the cooling fan cowl. I should really have waited until I needed to take the fan off next time, however I just thought that the next time I have to remove the fan it would probably be when I was in a hurry and wouldn’t have time to make a tidy job of my replacement clips.

As suspected it wasn’t as straight forward as first anticipated. I had to remove the ‘fins’ from the clips as they weren’t flexible enough to go through the hole. I needed to find washers with a 6mm hole that were not going to rust away so decided to rob my piggy bank of 5p pieces and drill a hole in them. I had thought about melting the clip pin at the rear to hold it in place but decided that might not be the best approach so instead I used starlock washers.

Next time I need to remove the fan I only need to cut the cable ties, no more searching for fir tree clips the correct size

Clips cut, fins removed, rustproof washers made from 5p coins and starlock washers

Time to change over the plush carpet mats for my winter rubber mats/trays. Sadly the rubber mats/trays are no longer available but I managed to find these well used ones which required a lot of work to get them into the shape they are now

A couple of before pictures, they were literally ready for the bin but as they are no longer available then needs must

A most uneventful Christmas trip in the V70 this year, yes the wind was blowing a hooley as we drove north of Spean Bridge without incident and the car took it all in its stride on 23rd. Then to the 24th I went for a drive to Glen Nevis and Glenfinnan to get me out the house for a break...

-5°C this morning and with the heavy rain last night the door handles had frozen, the door seals however were fine as I had coated them with Gummi Pflege a few weeks ago. Once the car was opened I checked the oil and water level and stuck my hand under the turbo to check there was no more oil leaks after its rebuild.

Just back from visiting family in the highlands and the car ran like a dream, overtaking slower traffic on the A82 over Ranch Moor and through Glencoe was effortless.

It will be one year on 23rd Feb since I purchased the V70 and I reset the OBC before leaving Slough to drive home. I've now done 3420 miles and the OBC says my average fuel consumption for the last year is 30.2mpg. The last time I did a tank fill to the brim calculation was during a VOS meet to Glencoe in October, 255 miles travelled and 6.715 gallons (30.53 litres) of Shell V-Power and I averaged 37.97mpg.

The next time I fill up I think I'll reset the OBC and do another brim calculation to find out how much the OBC is out..

This model of V70 is so much more appealing than the later design.

I had an early T5SE that I personally imported from Belgium in 2000. I still hanker after getting another but they are all a bit long in the tooth now.

They were never a stunning looking car BITD but they have matured gracefully and look better now than it did when new. P3 cars are junk compared to the P2 (P26) cars. Not sure I would agree about long in the tooth, yes they are dated but in a good way and more than capable of being a daily driver

When I say "long in the tooth" I mean that a lot of the car will be old and needing upkeep. You seem to have the facilities and the skills required as evidenced by your posts. I don't.

Nevertheless I keep a lookout for a good condition, good spec, manual D5, as that would suit my current needs very well.

Exactly 1 year ago yesterday since I bought the V70. It's been a lot of work, time and money sorting out the issues caused by ten years sitting unused in a garage and there are still a few small jobs I would like to do to keep it going for another 18 years.

Today I took a look under the bonnet today to check my levels and happy to say nothing required, while I was under there I had a feel under the turbo and it is bone dry. Happy days.

This is a list of most (I may have missed a few) of the faults I have rectified in the past 12 months
