Please get rid of those mesh covers.. They flow poorly and filter nothing, you might as well run open trumpets, at least you will get proper flow then.

They are fixed to the trumpets, they are copies of the original Autodelta trumpets I think, so you can’t find a set without them.

That is a shame.. Their only function is to cost power and maybe stop the odd rock going down the trumpet. I've never understood why they are used. It's like a self inflicted restriction laugh

I should say I'm loving your work and the car though.

I think it’s a fair point, on a road car you are running a risk without some sort of filter.
Race cars are different, the environment is usually cleaner (Fine road dust will damage the engine over time) and they will likely rebuild the engine after a few thousand miles anyway.
Those plug in socks might be the best compromise, nice long individual trumpets, but still some filtration.

Still I’m sure you are going to have a great sounding and responsive car to hoon about in.

There's nothing worse than a rock going down your trumpet!
Anyway, the OP will soon realise that they make a horrible deafening drone and swap them for a decent airbox.
biggrin

But in the meantime, congrats. It looks great!

You can buy a set of pipercross filters that fit perfectly onto the trumpets.well worth doing if you want to run trumpets generally, by all means leave them off gor shows etc but the mesh is too large

Agree with the above, when I had my Giulia I put on a pipercross filter that fit across all 4 trumpets. You can get them from ClassicAlfa. No point ruining the engine for an unnoticeable amount of added power IMO.

I don't think those meshes will have any effect on limiting induction air flow. What I would be concerned about is they simply are not filters bar stopping the odd stray leaf or stopping a nut bolt or washer falling down into the inlet ports while working on the engine they will do nothing. Also, they are only sucking hot engine bay heat. Personally, I think it's hard to beat a proper filter set up drawing ambient air from the front of car.

Awesome machine, reading through, I was thinking this needs a pair of side draughts... Low and behold here they are yum

I do have pipercross socks to go on once it hits the road!

Ah ha ha, thanks! I am slowly collecting the parts for a stock airbox just in case! I have a backplate already.

As above I have the Pipercross sock filters for when it hits the roads, it just looks better in pictures without them on!

To be fair there is a pretty big gap between the radiator and light where the grill is empty right in front of the trumpets so I would hope some fresh air would get through there, but I have seen there is an OEM duct on some coupes that sits in that area so I might try and track down one of those.

Looks lovely! Yes I’d like to have the engine out and give the bay on mine a proper tidy and some point!

I have spent the last few days sporadically tuning the carbs, the strange thing is the car seemed to behave differently each time I started it up. Very odd. But hopefully they are sorted now. Seemed to behave well this l afternoon, so I moved on to the last few bits to sort out before it can go out for the road test.

First thing on the list was to rebuild and fit the reconditioned front grill.

I had previously polished the metal strips, and also tried to bend them back straight as best as possible before riveting them back onto the mesh part of the grill.

All fitted up and back on the car. Really happy with how these look, they were in a real state when you looked at them up close before, plus the metal strips were pretty wonky when you looked at the car head on. So I’m glad they now look fresh and the metal strips are somewhat straight!

Unfortunately I’m still waiting on some rubber gaskets for the new headlights, so they will have to wait for another day. But I’m looking forward to getting those fitted too. It should really freshen up the front of the car as the old headlights were pretty tired looking!

The next small job on the list was to remove the temporary fuel pressure gauge and fit a new fuel line in its place between the carbs.

So, hopefully the headlight gaskets will arrived soon! Then I can get the lights fitted and take the car out for a road text!

Oh yes, and some evidence of appropriate filtration, for all concerned!

Managed to get the last little jobs finished off over the weekend.

First up was fitting the new headlights and bulbs, as you can see the old ones had seen better days.

Old vs new

I upgraded the bulbs to Bosch h4 halogen bulbs. I’m not a fan of the super bright LED look on old cars, so these work nicely.

Really happy with how the fresh front end looks! Much better. Here’s a picture of the old wonky grill and lights for reference.

Next up, new pedals. I didn’t get a picture of the old ones, but they were well worn. Fitted new rubber to the clutch and brake, but I didn’t like the look of the reproduction throttle pedal, so I decided to modify the original one with and OMP pedal I had lying around in the garage. I’m quite like the look!

With that done, there was only one thing left to do. Road test!

I’m happy to report it all went well! The car pulls nicely, no flat spots or rough running. Plus it sounds lovely! The only negative is once I got back I found the carbs are leaking fuel slightly from somewhere, so I need to investigate further, my suspicion is float levels. But I’m hoping it’s something that I can sort without removing the carbs, as they are running sweet. I guarantee if I take them off and refit them it will be Sod’s Law they won’t run as well.

Hopefully I will get it sorted next week, and hopefully take it for its first proper drive out to Southside hustle in Wimbledon next weekend! Fingers crossed!
